L’Institut français d’études andines (UMIFRE 17 MEAE/CNRS USR 3337 Amérique latine) propose plusieurs bourses d’aides à la mobilité d’une durée variable, allant de trois à neuf mois, éventuellement renouvelables. Ces aides à la recherche de terrain sont destinées aux doctorant(e)sinscrit(e)s en thèse (2021-2022) dans l’une des disciplines relevant des sciences humaines et sociales ou des sciences de la vie, ces bourses seront réparties sur une période allant du1er mars 2021 au 31 décembre 2022, en fonction des conditions sanitaires qui seront en vigueur dans la région andine.

The Multidisciplinary Grid 2020 Conference

The conference is aimed at examining the ‘grid’ as a cross-disciplinary theme with a multiplicity of expressions in terms of definitions, concepts, perceptions, representations, and histories. The ‘grid’ has played a significant role in shaping the spatial imaginaries of a wide range of fields: from Hippodamus of Miletus to the Cartesian revolution in mathematics, from the visual arts to archaeology to 'smart cities' and artificial intelligence. As the 'grid' has become an all-encompassing term, signifying a vast array of infrastructural and communication networks through which contemporary life is mediated and controlled, it is commonly viewed as a quintessential symbol of modernity. The conference strives to explore a new horizon of relationships and fusion of the ‘grids’ in these areas as manifested between humans, between machines, and between humans and machines ‒ bridging philosophical, cultural, pedagogical, technical and ethical issues.

PhD students from the XXXIV cycle of the joint PhD Programme in Historical, Geographical, Anthropological Studies (University of Padova, Ca' Foscari Venice, Verona) are happy to invite you to their conference, titled "Crises and Infrastructures: Responses to Change Between Materiality and Immateriality. A Dialogue Between Anthropology, Geography and History". We will be exploring the interactions between various examples of Crises and Infrastructural response, trying to push for an interdisciplinary dialogue. We aim to reflect not only on the role of infrastructures as means of problem-solving, but also on the varied outcomes of critical moments. What art does to the city in the Maghreb and the Middle East

Artistic practices, the expression of politics and transformations of public space

Ce numéro thématique et interdisciplinaire de Manazir Journal a pour objectif de réunir des travaux explorant le « faire art » dans l’espace public urbain en Afrique du Nord et au Moyen-Orient. Qu’ils soient visuels ou performatifs, les arts urbains (tags, graffitis, street art, fresques murales, performances, spectacles vivants, sculptures ou installations dans l’espace public, etc.) occupent depuis une dizaine d’années, une place grandissante dans la production artistique. La scène du graffiti et du street art s’est notamment étendue, à la faveur des « Printemps arabes » ; chaque année, les inscriptions murales se multiplient, de nouveaux centres d’art urbain apparaissent et des festivals entièrement dédiés au street art s’organisent. Ces initiatives font progressivement de la ville une galerie à ciel ouvert, contribuant au renouvellement des formes d’expression du politique dans l’espace public, et aux transformations de l’espace urbain.

A pluridisciplinary approach to a construction technique in Europe

Portant sur l’architecture rurale et urbaine en pan debois, ce colloque réunira des chercheurs européens afin de croiser les réflexions sur de nombreuses thématiques : approvisionnement des chantiers et économie de laconstruction, modes d’habitation, aspects structuraux, mise en œuvre des matériaux et décor seront ainsi comparés sur une longue période, s’étalant du XIII^e au XVIII^e siècle. Archéologues, historiens de la construction, ethnologues, chercheurs à l’Inventaire ou architectes, par la diversité de leur approche, éclaireront l’ensemble des caractéristiques et spécificités des pans de bois, mettant en évidence particularismes et savoir faire locaux, apparition de procédés novateurs ou au contraire perpétuation de certaines techniques.

This first special edition, DNArchi 2021, aims at capturing analysis, experiments or tutorials focusing on designing through the measurement of emotions, physiology or neurocognition. New measurement techniques make it now possible to capture our emotions and monitor our cognitive and physiological activity. Applied to design, these tools open new perspectives to study digital design by measuring users’ perceptions of the built environment with the potential to enhance it or by measuring designers’ own design activity and processes.

Co-designing in architecture - forms of collaboration and the hybridation of knowledge

Si l’architecture est, par essence, un art collaboratif, cette collaboration pourrait être perçue sur deux niveaux, qui sont les deux faces d’une même réalité. D’un côté, l’architecte théoricien, intellectuel qui se nourrit d’une multiplicité de références - dans un champ large pouvant aller de la littérature aux sciences sociales en passant par exemple par la philosophie - afin de penser une matière, dont le but est de créer. De l’autre, l'architecte constructeur qui vient puiser dans l’ingénierie, le design, la plastique. Il n’est alors plus seulement question de sources d’inspiration mais cette fois-ci de méthodes concrètes de recherche et de ressources attribuées non seulement à l’architecte mais aussi à l’équipe qui entoure ce dernier. Comment parvenir à conjuguer les savoir-faire, les connaissances, les expertises, jusqu'à les hybrider ? Quelles formes de collaboration permettent d’arriver à de véritables démarches de co-conception ?

Between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the Italian political geography was polarized by a number of cities of different sizes and traditions: Rome and Florence, Milan and Naples, Genoa and Venice, Turin and Modena, either ancient republics or new dynastic capitals, satellites of the great European monarchies or small Signorias. The conjunction — less frequently the conflict — between the mandates of the Council of Trent and the interests of the ruling élites of those cities set the foundation for novel forms of social, cultural and spiritual control, fostering new urban structures and policies, deeply conditioned by the presence and government of the sacred.

Mississippi Delta Communities Facing Disappearing Land

"Still on the Map!" takes as its context the Mississippi Delta fifteen years after Hurricane Katrina and about five years after the commissioning of the major new "100-year" flood protection infrastructure. Expressed from its title -a statement of resistance/resilience chanted by many inhabitants during ecological events in Louisiana- this research project aims to describe the links and "attachments" (LATOUR, 2017) that different communities in the delta maintain with their geographical environment in a situation of strong ecological tipping point, integrating the natural and artificial infrastructures of the watershed into the definition of ecosystems as socio-political actors in their own right. In a context where the delta's land is gradually sinking into the sea, every hour the surface area of a football pitch is permanently flooded.

Garden cities for the 21st century

Valorization, preservation and challenges in France, Europe and the world

The aim of this symposium is to put into perspective the different dimensions of a common heritage stemming from the garden city concept developed by Ebenezer Howard in 1898. An overview of the situation, a comparative approach and postulations on possible futures are expected. Four lines of thought and questioning are envisaged. The themes will transversally address the dimension of the built environment and the outdoor space, at different scales encompassing collective spaces of sociability, materiality of places, representations, practices, and so forth.

Tracing the city: city symphonies in reverse and the cinematic apparatus

What are city symphonies reflecting in their contemporary cinematic versions? How are filmic dispositifscapturing and documenting the city as an entity which is both subjective and intersubjective? As Richard Koeck suggests, in his essay Cine-spaces : Cinematic spaces in architecture and cities (2012), it is perhaps from the vantage point of the of the simulacrum that we must understand cinema's inscription within the post-modern city. Indeed, what if we began to think about the city as a visual system based on movements, lights and bodies – one we could explore in a cinematic, cinetic or kinesthesit way? By using film as a lens through which to see urban spaces and places, it would be less a question of showing the placement of architecture, but of seeing how much post-modern architecture, for instance, is a cinematic phenomenon, an urban décor in motion (Las Vegas, Dubai, Macao…).

Revue « Astasa »

Dans le contexte mondial de la pandémie de Covid-19, qui remet en cause nos organisations sociales, sanitaires, économiques, nationales et transnationales et qui bouleverse nos repères culturels, quels rôles, éventuellement nouveaux, l’art pourrait-il jouer ? La dimension planétaire de cette catastrophe sanitaire – qui a induit un effondrement de nos économies, la fragmentation de nos liens sociaux et des centaines de milliers de morts – nous invite à requestionner les pratiques artistiques. Elle interroge peut-être même la conception de l’art, en particulier en ses interactions avec la science, tant du point de vue de sa recherche formelle, de sa dimension critique, de sa finalité écologique, éthique, thérapeutique, que de ses modes de diffusion. S’il faut « apprendre à vivre avec le virus », dans quelle mesure et sous quelles formes l’art saurait-il accompagner les citoyens dans cet apprentissage ?

Le réseau scientifique thématique Japarchi se donne pour objectif de définir des notions et des dispositifs fondamentaux de la culture spatiale du Japon, concernant l’architecture, les villes, les paysages. Le séminaire annuel Japarchi présente des interventions prenant appui sur un terme ou une expression en japonais. Ces entrées lexicales concernent des dispositifs ou des agencements matériels, construits ou se déployant dans le territoire ; des notions ou des concepts relevant de l’architecture, de l’urbanisme ou du paysage ; des acteurs ou actrices qui agissent dans ou avec l’espace. Chacune de ces entrées propose une description, une mise en perspective historique, une analyse des fonctions et des significations dans leur actualité, accompagnées de tout autre caractéristique essentielle. Après un travail de relecture scientifique et d’édition, celle-ci fait ensuite l’objet d’une notice éditée en ligne sur le site internet de Japarchi.

L’intégration du skateboard au programme des Jeux olympiques de Tokyo est souvent présentée comme un événement. Faut-il pour autant y voir la fin d’une époque, celle d’une pratique juvénile de rue rejetant la conformité du sport traditionnel ? La décision du Comité international olympique révèle-t-elle une transformation profonde et durable de la pratique et de son organisation ? Signifie-t-elle une prise de pouvoir de l’institution internationale ou la reconnaissance d’un mouvement culturel, politique, créatif, commercial et architectural ? L’objectif du colloque est de confronter des regards qui éclairent les liens entre skateboard, olympisme, sport et performance.

For this special issue of Tarih Dergisi, the Turkish Journal of History, we invite original research addressing questions arising from travel to, in, and from the Ottoman Empire and Turkish Republic. Essays may focus on the place of travel writing in historiography. They may also address any and all aspects of travel. We particularly welcome studies of travel works in any format – books, manuscripts, letters, diaries, journals, reports, log-books, cartography, web-blogs – by Ottoman, Turkish, Arab, Asiatic and African travellers of any period. Essays need not, however, be restricted to conventional travelogues by individual travellers. We welcome studies concerned with modes of travel (pedestrianism, equestrian travel, trains, cars, planes, boats), and with questions involving mass travel (migrancy, nomadism, deportation).
