Disguise, dressing-up and transformations
Alors que notre travail en tant que chercheur·se·s est de classer, il s’agira ici d’étudier des cas de l’entre-deux au Moyen Âge : on se penchera sur la porosité entre différents groupes établis et les transformations, extérieures et intérieures, que cela implique. Il pourra s'agir de la transition d'une espèce à l'autre, d'un genre à l'autre, d'une espèce ou encore d'une ethnie à l'autre. Cette transformation de l'extérieur pourra notamment (mais pas seulement) passer par le déguisement ; quand la transformation est un passage d'un genre à l'autre, on parle souvent de « travestissement ». On prendra garde à ne pas considérer les trois termes « déguisements, « travestissements », « transformations » comme des équivalents : loin de les envisager comme synonymes, nous invitons à penser la relation extérieur/intérieur d'un·e individu·e de manière dynamique. Car modifier son aspect extérieur peut aussi permettre de révéler son intériorité réelle au monde, d'attester d'une transformation intime, ou d'accompagner cette transformation identitaire.

History and polemics: historiographical debates and the public space
Ever since history became an academic knowledge, historiographical debates have been exceptional moments of construction, condensation and dissensus, often resulting in historiographical turns. Controversies around specific themes have divided entire fields of knowledge production, bringing into light different, often contrasting conceptions, methodologies and practices of historical knowledge. Such debates were, at the same time, moments in which the description and interpretation of the past represented a public intervention in the present, in which the defense of a certain way of making sense of history was also a way of taking of sides in a specific contemporary political discussion. Historiographical polemics were therefore moments in which historiographical knowledge had to confront in the public space other approaches to the past, thus making visible, and challenging, the paradigms that rule the historical discipline and public history.

Le séminaire étudie l'organisation du travail intellectuel et de l'activité scientifique à partir de l'histoire des publications du XIXe siècle à aujourd'hui. À l'issue d'une enquête sur les revues scientifiques, la session 2020-2021 reprendra la problématique de l'articulation de l'ensemble des publications produites dans un champ disciplinaire, à partir de deux exemples, l'archéologie et la physique, dans une perspective chronologique large. Il approfondira également les liens entre écrit, publication et outillage documentaire au milieu du XXe siècle, à partir d'études de cas (expositions et musées documentaires).

Influence practices in XXth and XXIst Centuries
The field of influence activities is increasingly proliferating (advertising, propaganda, marketing, public relations, communication, soft power, social psychology, fake news, applied algorithmic, etc.). It is important to grasp not only their scope, but their extension, their dynamics, their practices, their logic, their techniques. Where and on whom do they work? What are their histories? Who are their practitioners? What are their pioneer fronts? Why is it important to consider them just as much each in their specificity, and together? What is the contribution of influence practices to the production of value (economic and political)? From the point of view of the present and from the one of long duration history, is not influence government (a form of governmentality) a major dimension of the deep neoliberal turn the world is experiencing nowadays?

Virtuosities. Ethics and aesthetics of technical gestures from the Middle Ages to the 19th century
Le présent colloque vise donc à provoquer la rencontre et le dialogue de différentes approches du geste technique, à partir d’une catégorie de gestes que l’on nomme virtuoses. On entend par là, l’attitude qui consiste à imposer indiscrètement à l’attention l’acte de produire ; la virtuosité étant considérée comme la primauté accordée à une métatechnique. Le phénomène sera examiné dans le domaine de la construction, mais aussi dans l’ensemble des activités artisanales et artistiques des époques pré-industrielles (de la peinture à la danse et à la musique, en passant par l’orfèvrerie, l’ébénisterie, le textile ou encore l’art des jardins). Il s’agira de voir si, par exemple, les constats élaborés sur ce phénomène par les sciences cognitives ou anthropologiques peuvent être historicisés pour éclairer notre connaissance du geste technique virtuose, de son statut et de sa valeur sociale ou culturelle et nourrir ainsi l’analyse de l’historien.

The week: partitioning and uses of social time, 19th-20th centuries

La semaine est évidemment une veille affaire puisqu’elle présida à l’invention du monde. Mais il se trouve que beaucoup l’oublièrent. Si ses usages, notamment religieux, ont longtemps ordonné l’organisation du temps collectif, ils tendirent à s’affaiblir dans le cours ordinaire des choses qui lui préféra d’autres scansions, quotidiennes, agricoles, saisonnières, etc. Une inflexion est cependant sensible à compter de la fin du XIXe siècle. Le déclin (relatif) de la semaine religieuse s’accompagne en effet, et paradoxalement, d’usages de plus en plus nombreux de découpes hebdomadaires. Au théâtre, puis au cinéma, la « semaine culturelle » a le vent en poupe. Le monde des affaires ou celui de la politique tendent également à réordonner le temps sur un mode hebdomadaire. Ce sont les usages renouvelés du temps par la découpe hebdomadaire que cette livraison entend explorer, à partir d’une série d’essais empiriques centrés sur des pratiques ou des activités caractéristiques de la modernité occidentale.

The problem of representation is central to the disciplinary fields of all the human and social sciences, most often implicitly. This omnipresence sometimes makes us forget that it is a notion whose definition, status and function are subject to the fluctuations of history. What interests us is the discrepancy between what this notion has been able to encompass over time and what it encompasses nowadays, as well as the explanation that can be given to these discrepancies or possible ruptures. The reflection focuses in particular on the link between the notion of representation and the notions of 'heritage' - tangible or intangible objects, but also products of a social construction - and of 'memory', since it is constructed through concrete representations, whether social or discursive practices.

Ce dossier thématique pour la Revue d'histoire des sciences humaines vise à interroger les conditions par lesquelles se sont forgés les savoirs disciplinaires sur le film et le cinéma (en sociologie, psychologie, histoire, géographie, philosophie, esthétique, médecine, etc.) en réunissant des contributions qui pourraient adopter plusieurs points de vue, non exclusifs : des itinéraires de personnalités (célèbres ou méconnues), des lieux ouvertement dédiés à la diffusion, à la pratique et à l’étude du cinéma, ou développant des activités en lien avec le cinéma sans y être totalement dédiés, des expérimentations techniques, des films.

The "Annales" ad regional history, regional history and the "Annales"
Cet appel à contributions est destiné à un numéro thématique des Annales de Normandie sur l'histoire de l'historiographie régionale, à paraître au second semestre 2021. Il s'agit d'une réflexion sur les rapports entre les revues d'histoire régionale et les Annales d'histoire économique et sociale, fondées en 1929 et devenues en 1946 Annales. Economies, sociétés, civilisations. Deux axes principaux de recherche sont proposés : l'analyse de la place et de la fonction de l'histoire régionale et la réception des travaux publiés par les revues d'histoire régionale dans les Annales de 1929 aux années 1970; l'analyse des modalités de la réception et de la diffusion du paradigme des Annales dans les revues d'histoire régionale sur la même période.

Contending Representations: Questioning Republicanism in Early Modern Genoa (1559-1684)
In the past thirty years, several studies have been devoted to the political and cultural flowering of the republic of Genoa during the so-called ‘siglo de los Genoveses’, between 1528 and 1630, when Genoa became the hub of European trade and an important epicenter of artistic and literary production. Yet little attention has been granted to the cultural and economic crisis that followed or to how Genoese republican state power was represented during the long seventeenth century, especially in relation to neighbouring polities. To address this gap, the conference will explore how the Genoese Republic shaped its political image between 1559 – the year of the publication of Oberto Foglietta’s Delle cose della repubblica di Genova – and 1684, when Genoa was bombed by the French. We intend to address questions such as how did Genoese politicians and men of letters represent their homeland? How was Genoa represented by the Genoese community in Spain or in the Low Countries? How was its political system conceived by other Italian and non-Italian political writers? And how did prevailing depictions of absolutism influence republican rhetoric?

The National University of Colombia and the Department of Citizen Culture of the Secretary of Culture, Recreation and Sport of Bogota, Colombia have joined forces to organize the upcoming XVIII International Symposium on Civilizing Processes (SIPC). The SIPCs were born in 1996 on a Brazilian initiative and have been held every two years in Latin America to encourage the exchange of ideas and research results among scientists from various disciplines who find in Norbert Elias’ work a source of guidance in facing the challenges of today’s world and who share an interest in social sciences adjusted to reality.

Eschatology is one of the central components of medieval Christian culture. The end of the world, the Last Judgment, salvation, Messianism, the Antichrist, the Apocalypticism and millenarianism are inescapable elements in what we may generally describe as "Medieval eschatology". It is the intention of the International Conference "The Medieval Eschatology" to provide a venue for reflecting on these as well as other eschatological issues that may be proposed. This can be done analytically or descriptively from both a practical and theoretical approach.

Brexit has just happened and its consequences are not yet fully comprehended. Would the outcome be a return to a status quo ante the Brentry of 1 January 1973 in British-EU relations? Would Britain become a sort of bigger Norway tightly connected to the EU, but yet not fully a member of the united organization? Would Britain really continue to exist as such? Would Scotland, not to mention other territories, emulate London and decide on their own Brexit, this time from the United Kingdom, in order to rejoin the EU? Would actually Brexit become a pathway for other skeptical EU nations? Would Brexit rocket exclusive forms of nationalisms? Would the whole of united Europe collapse, on the long run, as a result of Brexit as the League of Nations had become toothless after the US Senate had vetoed the Pact of League of Nations? But what effect is going to have Brexit on Scandinavian countries which historically have been closely connected to Britain? How is it reflected in Scandinavian intellectual milieus, in mass-media, in public discourses? What about the Baltic states which received a strong support from Britain in key moments of their history, for instance when Royal Navy came at the rescue of Estonian and Latvian independence following World War I or in the process of re-enactment of Baltic sovereignty after the collapse of the Soviet Union? Pour son 73e congrès, qui aura lieu à Orford en Estrie les 15, 16 et 17 octobre 2020, l'Institut d'histoire de l'Amérique française sollicite des communications qui mobilisent la notion d’événement, mais également qui la mettent à l’épreuve et la questionnent, des communications qui cherchent à révéler des aspects méconnus d’événements bien enracinés dans les récits historiques, mais également qui mettent ou remettent en scène des événements oubliés de l’historiographie ou de la mémoire collective, des communications qui réfléchissent à la manière dont l’événement est fabriqué, historicisé. Au final, nous n’avons pas à choisir entre l’événement et la longue durée, mais il y a certainement une nécessité de réfléchir à la place de l’événement dans la longue durée.

Hippolyte Taine and the humanities and social sciences

Un quart de siècle après le colloque « Taine au carrefour des cultures du XIXe siècle » (1993), où en est-on de la réévaluation de son œuvre ? Plus précisément, que peut-on dire aujourd’hui de la place que Taine a occupée et occupe encore au sein des sciences de l’homme et de la société ? Se voulant un point d’étape sur la revisite toujours actuelle de l’œuvre de Taine, le dossier « Hippolyte Taine et les sciences de l’homme et de la société » des Etudes Sociales voudrait aussi contribuer à la nécessaire réflexion de ces sciences sur elles-mêmes, leur histoire comme leur actualité. En effet, bien qu’ayant vieilli, l’œuvre de Taine reste une pierre de touche des apories des sciences de l’homme et de la société. Le dossier envisagé comportera deux volets : l’apport de Taine, en son temps, à la constitution d’une science de l’homme et de la société ; la transmission et le devenir de l’oeuvre de Taine au sein des sciences humaines et sociales.
