Japanese spatiality (Japarchi) - 2020-2021

Le séminaire annuel « Spatialité au Japon » du réseau scientifique thématique JAPARCHI a repris à l’automne 2018. En s’intéressant à un ensemble de notions et de dispositifs fondamentaux de la culture spatiale du Japon, il s’inscrit dans la continuité de l’« encyclopédie ouverte » publiée en 2014 : Vocabulaire de la spatialité japonaise. Cette année, les entrées thématiques portent : 1) sur la notion d’informel dans l’actualité de l’espace. Cette notion apporte un renouvellement conceptuel et pratique utile pour aborder les questions de transitions, de ville soutenable et également de crises, 2) sur les notions de paysage au Japon avec une deuxième journée d’étude 3) les jardins japonais en France, c’est-à-dire sur la présence/l'empreinte/la réception/l’influence du Japon dans le paysagisme en France, avec une première journée d’étude 4) sur le patrimoine architectural, urbain et paysager dans la ville japonaise d’aujourd’hui.

Founding, selecting, defending: how to make democracy survive (1918-1960)?
Ce colloque international s’inscrit dans le projet de formation-recherche « Quelle démocratie ? La réflexion sur la crise, la modernisation et les limites de la démocratie en Allemagne, en France, en Angleterre et en Europe centrale entre 1919 et 1939 ». Ce projet pluridisciplinaire propose de revenir sur les réflexions autour de la démocratie de l’entre-deux-guerres en s’intéressant particulièrement aux discours critiques et aux projets de réformes issus du camp démocratique au sens large. Sa démarche consiste à insérer ces discours dans leurs contextes historique, idéologique et socio-culturel, tout en s’intéressant également à leur impact sur la vie politique et sociale de l’époque. Dans la logique de ce projet, ce colloque portera sur la question de l’enracinement démocratique, c’est-à-dire sur la question des moyens à mettre en œuvre pour faire survivre une démocratie en milieu (potentiellement) hostile.

À l’occasion de la présente journée d’études, nous nous proposons de réfléchir à la manière dont l’imaginaire urbain renvoie à des territorialités qui sont simultanément habitées par les écrivains et artistes, l’occupant, les autochtones et ceux qui sont désormais considérés dans leur condition d’exclus, d’étrangers ou de « clandestins ». Nous invitons les contributeurs à s’interroger sur la part de la dimension spatiale dans les écrits (fiction, poésie, écrits intimes, théâtre, etc.) ou les réalisations picturales, musicales des écrivains, artistes et musiciens qui ont réagi face aux mesures introduites à l’encontre des Juifs.

The problem of representation is central to the disciplinary fields of all the human and social sciences, most often implicitly. This omnipresence sometimes makes us forget that it is a notion whose definition, status and function are subject to the fluctuations of history. What interests us is the discrepancy between what this notion has been able to encompass over time and what it encompasses nowadays, as well as the explanation that can be given to these discrepancies or possible ruptures. The reflection focuses in particular on the link between the notion of representation and the notions of 'heritage' - tangible or intangible objects, but also products of a social construction - and of 'memory', since it is constructed through concrete representations, whether social or discursive practices.

The "Annales" ad regional history, regional history and the "Annales"
Cet appel à contributions est destiné à un numéro thématique des Annales de Normandie sur l'histoire de l'historiographie régionale, à paraître au second semestre 2021. Il s'agit d'une réflexion sur les rapports entre les revues d'histoire régionale et les Annales d'histoire économique et sociale, fondées en 1929 et devenues en 1946 Annales. Economies, sociétés, civilisations. Deux axes principaux de recherche sont proposés : l'analyse de la place et de la fonction de l'histoire régionale et la réception des travaux publiés par les revues d'histoire régionale dans les Annales de 1929 aux années 1970; l'analyse des modalités de la réception et de la diffusion du paradigme des Annales dans les revues d'histoire régionale sur la même période.

Decolonizing Museum Cultures and Collections: Mapping Theory and Practice in East-Central Europe
International conference for heritage scholars and practitioners
This conference brings together curators, artists, scholars, and other intellectuals and cultural activists working on East-Central European heritage, to reflect on how the main trends of decolonial debate are intersecting in practical and theoretical terms with the heritage sector, with a particular focus on museums in the region. The conference will place special emphasis on mapping both the range of colonial histories embedded in, as well as decolonial approaches to, museum collections and practices in East-Central Europe.

XVIII International Symposium on Civilizing Processes
The National University of Colombia and the Department of Citizen Culture of the Secretary of Culture, Recreation and Sport of Bogota, Colombia have joined forces to organize the upcoming XVIII International Symposium on Civilizing Processes (SIPC). The SIPCs were born in 1996 on a Brazilian initiative and have been held every two years in Latin America to encourage the exchange of ideas and research results among scientists from various disciplines who find in Norbert Elias’ work a source of guidance in facing the challenges of today’s world and who share an interest in social sciences adjusted to reality.

Revolutionary eloquence and rhetorical traditions (18th-19th centuries)
Quel rapport une révolution politique, moment tout entier tendu vers le changement, et donc vers l'avenir, entretient-elle avec les modèles du passé ? Est-il possible de « se passer du passé » ? Le changement brutal, la « régénération » et la « table rase », leitmotive du discours de la Révolution française, ne sont-ils que de vains mots ? […] La question du rapport conflictuel et ambigu des révolutions politiques aux modèles du passé nous invite à réfléchir à la fois aux formes discursives, notamment rhétoriques, dont hérite la Révolution française, et à la manière dont cette dernière les récupère, les rejette ou les transforme, et à la fois à l'influence qu'exerce à son tour la Révolution française sur les discours des révolutions suivantes : là encore, s'agit-il d'une imitation (et, le cas échéant, de quel ordre ?), d'un refus, ou d'une métamorphose ?

A handwriting of the 15th century in the focus of new research approaches
On June 18th and 19th 2020 the Badische Landesbibliothek organizes the international and interdisciplinary congress “The return of the Wigalois - a handwriting of the 15th century in the focus of new research approaches”. The congress presents and discusses first results of the again possible scientific altercation with materiality of the handwriting, its production context and the book market at the upper Rhine, for which it was produced.

Brexit has just happened and its consequences are not yet fully comprehended. Would the outcome be a return to a status quo ante the Brentry of 1 January 1973 in British-EU relations? Would Britain become a sort of bigger Norway tightly connected to the EU, but yet not fully a member of the united organization? Would Britain really continue to exist as such? Would Scotland, not to mention other territories, emulate London and decide on their own Brexit, this time from the United Kingdom, in order to rejoin the EU? Would actually Brexit become a pathway for other skeptical EU nations? Would Brexit rocket exclusive forms of nationalisms? Would the whole of united Europe collapse, on the long run, as a result of Brexit as the League of Nations had become toothless after the US Senate had vetoed the Pact of League of Nations? But what effect is going to have Brexit on Scandinavian countries which historically have been closely connected to Britain? How is it reflected in Scandinavian intellectual milieus, in mass-media, in public discourses? What about the Baltic states which received a strong support from Britain in key moments of their history, for instance when Royal Navy came at the rescue of Estonian and Latvian independence following World War I or in the process of re-enactment of Baltic sovereignty after the collapse of the Soviet Union? The aim of this thematic issue is to pay tribute to Camille Lacoste-Dujardin (1921-2016), an eminent figure of French ethnology who dedicated her fifty-eight years scientific career to the study of the complexities of the Kabyle society and, beyond, to those of any human society. Indeed, even though her ethnological researches seem to have been “restricted to a people of mountain dwellers, its language and culture”, actually “they have never been limited neither in space, nor in time”, and “not even strictly confined to some single object of observation”; they have rather always involved “references to larger [sociocultural] wholes”.

73rd congress of the Institut d'histoire de l'Amérique française (IHAF)
Pour son 73e congrès, qui aura lieu à Orford en Estrie les 15, 16 et 17 octobre 2020, l'Institut d'histoire de l'Amérique française sollicite des communications qui mobilisent la notion d’événement, mais également qui la mettent à l’épreuve et la questionnent, des communications qui cherchent à révéler des aspects méconnus d’événements bien enracinés dans les récits historiques, mais également qui mettent ou remettent en scène des événements oubliés de l’historiographie ou de la mémoire collective, des communications qui réfléchissent à la manière dont l’événement est fabriqué, historicisé. Au final, nous n’avons pas à choisir entre l’événement et la longue durée, mais il y a certainement une nécessité de réfléchir à la place de l’événement dans la longue durée.

Guido delle Colonne and his Reception in Medieval Europe
Guido delle Colonne’s Historia destructionis Troiae has been a phenomenal success since its composition at the end of the 13th century. Nevertheless, academic studies remain limited and questions remain open about the author himself (judge, historian and poet?), about his sources – including the essential Trojan novel in verse by Benoît de Saint Maure –, about the construction and style of his work and about its intents in a particularly troubled period. While significant progress has been made in recent years, studies are far from being exhaustive and the case deserve to be considered anew. Historia's interest lies in particular in the translations, adaptations and summaries it generated throughout Europe until the 17th century. This international conference aims thus to shed new lights on the original text as well as on the diversity of its appropriations, between filiation and emancipation. In this regard, the spectacular diffusion has contributed to strenghten a Trojan European literature.

Slovakia in Europe in the past century
L’objectif de ce cycle de conférences est de croiser les perspectives de différentes disciplines des sciences humaines et sociales sur le cheminement de la Slovaquie au cours de ce dernier siècle. Il s’agit en particulier de montrer en quoi l’expérience slovaque, aux côtés de celles d’autres pays de l’Europe centrale, mais souvent moins connue, enrichit la compréhension de phénomènes qui ont marqué le siècle : déplacements de frontières, disparitions et apparitions d’États, persistance ou disparition de communautés non slaves (Hongrois, Allemands, Juifs, Ukrainiens, Roms, etc.), compétition de modèles de société et circulation d’imaginaires et de styles artistiques. Ces phénomènes se sont accompagnés d’une modernisation accélérée du pays et d’un mouvement inédit dans sa construction en État-nation.

Cette conférence se propose d'interroger les relations de la fiction américaine aux innovations qui ont marqué les premières décennies du XXIe siècle : internet, médias sociaux, objets et environnements intelligents, intelligence artificielle, nanotechnologies, ingénierie génétique et autres biotechnologies, transhumanisme. Ces innovations techniques redéfinissent la manière dont nous habitons notre monde, interagissons les uns avec les autres et appréhendons l'humain dans son rapport de plus en plus étroit à la machine, non plus, comme autrefois, soigné ou réparé, mais désormais augmenté ou remplacé. Qu'en est-il alors de nos pratiques artistiques et culturelles ? Ces avancées récentes modifient-ils la langue et la littérature ?

Thinking the Latin American right wings
IVth International Congress
The IVth International Congress Thinking the Latin American right wings follows the three previous ones held in France (2014), Argentina (2016) and Brazil (2018), which have permitted the constitution of a community of researchers working on Latin American right-wings. Several specialists from different countries and disciplines have joined in this network, in order to promote projects and studies on this theme, and stimulated the development of new issues related to this political family. The use of various methodologies such as the analysis of political traditions and cultures, representations and imaginaries, identities, networks, sensitivities and memories have made it possible to consolidate a field of study that has become relevant to understand current Latin American political scene.

"Thinking the library": Belgian writers' and artists' libraries (19th-21st centuries)
Theme issue of the Textyles journal
Pour un de ses prochains numéros, Textyles, revue des lettres belges de langue française, abordera les bibliothèques d’écrivains et d’artistes (plasticiens, architectes, musiciens) belges, du XIXe siècle à nos jours. Comparé aux bibliothèques d’écrivains et d’artistes français qui ont déjà mené à divers projets de recherche, le champ des bibliothèques belges n’a été encore que peu investigué. Pourtant, la conservation de bibliothèques d’écrivains et d’artistes belges dans diverses institutions (Ghelderode à l’université libre de Bruxelles, Bauchau à l’université Catholique de Louvain, Lemonnier au Musée Camille Lemonnier, etc.) et la publication de quelques inventaires révèlent un terrain de recherche prometteur. Afin d’engager le mouvement, ce numéro propose de penser la bibliothèque selon une perspective à la fois méthodologique, théorique et pratique, à la croisée des arts et de la littérature.

2nd Franco-American history summer school - the long 18th century
Après la première école franco-américaine consacrée à l’histoire de la France moderne inaugurée à l’université de Princeton en 2019, l’appel à candidatures est désormais ouvert pour la seconde édition qui se tiendra à l’école normale supérieure de Lyon (ENS Lyon) du 8 au 13 juin 2020.
