  History and polemics: historiographical debates and the public space

  Ever since history became an academic knowledge, historiographical debates have been exceptional moments of construction, condensation and dissensus, often resulting in historiographical turns. Controversies around specific themes have divided entire fields of knowledge production, bringing into light different, often contrasting conceptions, methodologies and practices of historical knowledge. Such debates were, at the same time, moments in which the description and interpretation of the past represented a public intervention in the present, in which the defense of a certain way of making sense of history was also a way of taking of sides in a specific contemporary political discussion. Historiographical polemics were therefore moments in which historiographical knowledge had to confront in the public space other approaches to the past, thus making visible, and challenging, the paradigms that rule the historical discipline and public history.

  Violence: An international journal

  Violence: An international journal is launching a call for papers on the theme “Violence and environmental crisis”. Can we speak about violence when describing biodiversity loss, the destruction of natural sanctuaries like Amazonia and the Great Barrier Reef, or when observing the spillage of illegally polluting wastes? How long is the chain of violence related to environmental crisis? And who are the perpetrators and the victims of such violence? In which way can we speak about violence, and can this violence be legitimated or condemned? All this raises theoretical, normative, linguistic and empirical questions to be discussed in the articles fostered by this call.

  The current state of natural law - from the vitality of doctrines to the unthoughts of positive law

  De la vitalité des doctrines aux impensés du droit positif

  À la différence de leurs homologues étrangers, rares sont les juristes français qui cultivent actuellement une référence au droit naturel dans leurs écrits. En France, les doctrines du droit naturel semblent être devenues un objet d’étude exclusivement passé dans le champ de l’histoire des idées politiques. On attribue souvent ce repli au triomphe du normativisme kelsénien qui incarnerait l’aboutissement de la neutralité axiologique, en proposant une science émancipée de tout ancrage métaphysique et théologique. À y regarder de plus près, on doit constater la formidable diversité, tant sur le fond que dans la méthode, des courants et des approches qui se cachent derrière cette appellation – à commencer par la distinction entre droit naturel « classique » et « moderne ». Peut-on véritablement considérer qu’une telle diversité, le plus souvent mal identifiée, a disparu – ou a-t-elle simplement pris de nouveaux visages en abandonnant une étiquette stigmatisante ? C’est ce que les travaux de cette journée d’étude chercheront à établir.

  Hippolyte Taine and the humanities and social sciences

  Un quart de siècle après le colloque « Taine au carrefour des cultures du XIX^e siècle » (1993), où en est-on de la réévaluation de son œuvre ? Plus précisément, que peut-on dire aujourd’hui de la place que Taine a occupée et occupe encore au sein des sciences de l’homme et de la société ? Se voulant un point d’étape sur la revisite toujours actuelle de l’œuvre de Taine, le dossier « Hippolyte Taine et les sciences de l’homme et de la société » des Etudes Sociales voudrait aussi contribuer à la nécessaire réflexion de ces sciences sur elles-mêmes, leur histoire comme leur actualité. En effet, bien qu’ayant vieilli, l’œuvre de Taine reste une pierre de touche des apories des sciences de l’homme et de la société. Le dossier envisagé comportera deux volets : l’apport de Taine, en son temps, à la constitution d’une science de l’homme et de la société ; la transmission et le devenir de l’oeuvre de Taine au sein des sciences humaines et sociales.

  Philosophy, History and Sociology of Artificial Intelligence

  The purpose of this seminar is to position itself at the center of the scientific, epistemological, technological and societal transformations that the developments of artificial intelligence engage. The seminar we propose therefore aims to study AI in its technological / scientific duality, through its historical, philosophical, epistemological, ethical and sociological aspects. In order to understand the modern stakes of this discipline, we will consider it here as defined in its historicity, but also as a scientific tool, tool of knowledge and transformation of knowledge, of understanding, finally as a socio-cultural entity in interaction with its environment, whether it is human or non-human.
