Religions and Politics in Europe's Orients (14th-20th c.)
The goal of this conference is to explore a number of aspects of the relationship between the religious phenomenon and politics through the historical framework of political developments in what progressively will become, through interaction, the Orients of Europe, i.e. Eastern and Southeastern Europe as well as the Eastern Mediterranean, an area so unorthodox and difficult to examine in terms of essentialist definitions. It is no accident that Samuel Huntington believed that what we call the ‘Orthodox East’ does not form a part of the West, but rather a sui generis encounter between Christianity and Islam at the borders of Europe. This theoretical scheme is not overturned by drawing the borders of Europe a little further to the East, as many believe, but by historicizing the issue of the relationship between religion and politics in the given geographical region through the comparative prism of what was occurring during the same period in Western Europe. -

International Workshop, Paris-IEDES, 7-8 december 09
Organized by UMR 201, RUME India, Mexico, Madagascar, CIESAS (Mexico) (www.rume-rural-microfinance.org). The main purpose of this interdisciplinary workshop will be a theoretical and empirical examination of over-indebtedness from the perspective of southern countries, with the following underlying hypothesis: to define and analyze the process of indebtedness requires first an understanding of the complexity and diversity of debt relationships. The following questions might be addressed: 1) The social meaning of debt, creditworthiness and over-indebtedness. 2) Financial ‘markets’ and financial providers. 3) Financial culture. 4) Impoverishment and accumulation. 5) Over-indebtedness. -

« South Asian Culture à la barre » est la première réunion d’une section du projet ANR « JUST-INDIA » (http://www.just-india.net) consacrée aux conflits de droit dans les cas judiciaires transnationaux. Les participants à la journée examineront comment les tribunaux de différents pays s’approprient la notion de culture lorsqu’ils sont amenés à se prononcer dans des cas impliquant des ressortissants d’Asie du Sud, et quel est le rôle de cette notion dans les procédures judiciaires correspondantes. Les exposés et les discussions seront en anglais. -

Theatre after 1989 in East Central Europe
L’année 1989 a marqué un tournant dans l’histoire de l’Europe médiane. Vingt années après la chute du mur de Berlin, le Centre d’études tchèques de l’ULB a choisi de s’interroger sur l’après 1989 et de focaliser sa réflexion sur les arts de la scène. La visée de ce colloque est de désarticuler l’année 1989 pour mettre en exergue les points de convergence et de divergence du théâtre centre européen contemporain toutes générations confondues, et de tenter de cerner les nouveaux traits par lesquels il se définit. Les intervenants sont tant des historiens et des théâtrologues que des artistes de la scène. -

the Economy of Medical Technology in Europe and its Colonies, 1600–1850
L’histoire de la médecine est-elle celle de ses instruments (Henri Sigerist) ? En dépit de l’importance des techniques pour le diagnostic et les pratiques thérapeutiques depuis l’Antiquité, nous avons une connaissance insuffisante de l’équipement médicale, ses usages et sa production pour la période moderne. Pourtant, des études récentes ont souligné l’importance des forceps dans la prise en charge des naissances difficiles, le rôle de la céramique dans le stockage et la commercialisation des drogues dans l’Europe moderne, le développement parallèle de la petite métallurgie (toyware) et des bandages en métal largement commercialisés dans les colonies, ou encore les techniques visuelles ont associé les cadavres anatomisés, les images imprimées, les cires et les instruments du diagnostic visuel, pour donner quelques exemples.Le colloque vise à présenter des recherches neuves sur la culture matérielle et les pratiques médicales de l'Europe moderne, au carrefour de l’histoire de la médecine, l’histoire des techniques et l’histoire économique. -

What is the historical experience of cities in the former territories of the Ottoman Empire - in the Balkans, Anatolia, the Middle East, and North Africa - in dealing with the impact of global changes and the transformation from Empire to nation States? How did people of different cultural, social and religious backgrounds live together? How are such examples of conviviality, conflict, migration, and urban regimes of governance and stratification conceptualized? And how have urban traditions been reinterpreted, and what bearing does this have on modern conceptions of civil society, multicultural societies, migration, or cosmopolitanism. La première journée d’étude consacrée à l’écriture de l’histoire au début de l’époque moderne en France et en Angleterre (6 juin 2009) a montré que l’activité des femmes dans les genres historiques dominants que sont la chronique, l’historiographie officielle, l’histoire religieuse, l’histoire politique est à la fois ponctuelle et discontinue. Cependant, même si les femmes n’écrivent pas l’histoire comme les hommes, leur présence sur la scène de l’histoire, ou au contact de ceux qui la font, les autorise à livrer des récits précis sur le passé proche. Ces spectatrices engagées, prêtes à souffrir au nom de la vérité qu’elles décrivent, sont les auteurs d’importants témoignages que cette seconde journée voudrait examiner. -

Society and Politics in South-Eastern Europe during the 19th century
There has always been a negative image attached to South-Eastern European politics and polities and rarely has it been widely acknowledged (Mazower) that the process of state formation in the region was not just a pale and gruesome caricature of Western European models but rather a complicated affair involving juggling with various institutional models (local as well as imported ones), coping with societies of a sometimes inextricable ethnoreligious diversity and varying degrees of political allegiance to central power, dealing with foreign interference and tampering. 19th century visitors of the region contributed a lot to this negative image which still clings to the region (Todorova) and culturalists still like to refer back to the 19th c. as the genealogical matrix of all the region’s evils. -

Perspectives on a European Social, Cultural, and Protest History of the 1980s
On May 6th 1980, a group of new recruits was publicly sworn in with the German Bundeswehr in the Bremen soccer stadium. As a reaction, street battles of hitherto unknown dimensions between left-wing activists and (military) police took place in the area near the stadium. Since the conflicts surrounding the newly built nuclear power plant of Brokdorf a couple of years earlier, a certain "tradition" of militant mass protest had already existed. Yet with the so-called "Bremen Bundeswehr riots" for the first time protests of a comparable scale took place within a bigger city. Viewed in the following years as the beginning of the German autonomous movement, this inner city riot marked at the same time a European phenomenon. -

Recent research on migrant communities has witnessed a clear shift towards a more sophisticated understanding of the variety of bonds that link minority groups to the society they live in, as well as to their places of origins. Yet, when it comes to the understanding of past migrations, historical discourse still depends in many ways on traditional categories of analysis, that often poorly reflect the profound originality of the situations under study. This session is an attempt to challenge traditional and “ready-to-go” views on the organization of community life among migrants who lived in the Mediterranean port-cities during the late modern period (17th to 19th centuries). -

Les mythes de fondation et l’Europe
Le colloque organisé par le Centre Georges Chevrier, l’Université de Bourgogne, le CNRS et Sciences Po entend réunir juristes, politistes, littéraires, philosophes afin d’envisager le problème crucial de la fondation de l’Europe institutionnelle. Cela à un moment où l’actualité politique européenne nous montre à quel point le lien nécessaire entre l’Europe et les Européens s’étiole, s’il a jamais existé. Il ne s’agit pas, bien sûr, de tenter de mythologiser l’Europe. Il s’agit plutôt, grâce à une « mythique concrète » (P. Ricœur), de revenir aux mythes d’origine pour comprendre comment se fabrique le pouvoir occidental. Nous pourrons alors espérer mieux percevoir les forces et faiblesses de l’Europe juridique et politique d’aujourd’hui et au bout du compte sonder sa fragilité ontologique. Cette recherche doit nous conduire d’abord à réfléchir sur la nature et la fonction des mythes de fondation, notamment à travers l’étude du système mythique romain. Elle nous amènera ensuite à revenir sur la question impériale et celle des racines chrétiennes de l’Europe. Enfin, elle nous poussera à explorer d’autres expériences occidentales (les USA) ou orientales (la Chine). -

The Western Society for French History
Founded in 1974, the Western Society for French History seeks to promote the study of French and Francophone history. Its international membership includes university faculty and graduate students, independent scholars and amateur historians in the general public from across the United States and Canada, as well as from France, Italy, the United Kingdom, Australia, Japan and many other countries. Drawing inspiration from the frontier spirit of the North American West, it brings together specialists in the study of France and French culture from a wide variety of interdisciplinary backgrounds, beginning with history, but also embracing literary studies, art and music history, as well as political theory, philosophy, anthropology, and sociology. Since its formation, it has encouraged the exploration of French history through an openness to new methods of research, while also continuing to support more traditional fields of interest. Finally, the Society takes pride in its support of graduate education through its scholarship program.
