Economy and waqf-habous: possession and circulation of waqf properties in Islamic regions
This seminar on waqf enters into its 3rd year. After having studied daily use of waqf, followed by the subject of networks of individuals connected to waqf in Islamic lands and other religious communities in those regions, in 2012-13, we are studying the economy and waqf. This is important in the sens that economic networks related to waqf reflect and reveal both the vertical and horizonatal depth of the contacts which are established with respect to waqf operations (rent of waqf properties, transfer of those properties, state politics in this respect) and the society in which they function. The documents studied in this seminar (judicial, legislative, literary) coming from Muslim majority regions but also from Europe where waqf is developing (United Kingdom, Austria, USA) will compose the program this year.

History of Science, History of Text
The seminar "History of Science, History of Text" will mainly explore textual problems related to the ERC Project SAW – "Mathematical Sciences in the Ancient World". The seminar will address the following issues regarding scientific sources: how textual sources bear witness to the social groups that produced them; How textual sources testify to knowledge; history of compilations How actors structure their texts and knowledge into parts; how textual sources reflect the material environment in which they were produced.

Estas extensas viagens deram a oportunidade aos Portugueses de interagirem com culturas muito diferente. Mas deram-lhe também uma capacidade incomum para abrir as suas portas a outras culturas, outras formas de viver, de fazer negócios, de comunicar e de construir pontes e caminhos.

Il s’emploiera également à interroger les mutations (colonisation, exode rural, développement économique, émergence de nouvelles classes,...) qu’ont connues ou connaissent les différents groupes sociaux et à repérer ruptures communes ou au contraire évolutions singulières dans la région. -

La marionnette est un objet intermédiaire. Longtemps située à la croisée des domaines de l’artisanat d’art, des pratiques religieuses, de la culture populaire et de la virtuosité du mouvement, elle a connu une nouvelle naissance et suscité de nouvelles perceptions en se confrontant au théâtre et à l’art contemporains, à la découverte des arts extra-occidentaux, aux questionnements sur l’art pour le jeune public, au cinéma d’animation et aux nouvelles technologies, à l’idéologie consumériste, tout en posant au niveau des institutions patrimoniales une question essentielle : celle d’exposer l’art vivant. La marionnette est donc emblématique d’un corpus d’objets en forte redéfinition sur le plan de la création, de la mise en histoire et de la valorisation patrimoniale. -

Cultural heritage - what's the goal?
Reflection on the means of action
La culture et le patrimoine sont essentiels à la constitution des identités individuelles et collectives et à la construction du lien social. Consciente que la sauvegarde du patrimoine est une cause humanitaire, l’association Patrimoine sans frontières (PSF) agit dans des contextes d’alerte, d’oubli ou de déshérence, ainsi qu’après les conflits et les catastrophes. Depuis 20 ans, PSF est l’unique association française à travailler en ce sens, et s’emploie à sauvegarder et à valoriser le patrimoine pour venir renforcer la cohésion et le lien social dans les situations de rupture et de crise. Le 1er décembre 2012, quatre tables rondes seront organisées pour faire le bilan de ses actions, dégager les éléments de continuité et de cohérence qui font sa spécificité et impulser une réflexion sur le rôle du patrimoine dans la vie contemporaine. -

Par convention avec la Persian Heritage Foundation (New-York) et avec le concours du Collège de France, la chaire « Mondes iranien et indien » organise tous les deux ans à Paris une série de cinq conférences de haut niveau portant sur les études iraniennes, destinées aux universitaires et au public cultivé. Chaque série étudie un aspect de la culture iranienne sous différents angles. Les sixièmes conférences d’études iraniennes Ehsan et Latifeh Yarshater (2012) ont pour thématique : « Aspects culturels et sociaux de l’institution du vaqf dans le monde iranien », par Christoph Werner (professeur à l’Université de Marburg – Philipps-Universität). -

Beyond dichotomies: the Sudan, from the formation of the country to southern independence, 1869-2011
Cette journée d’étude voudrait proposer une réflexion sur la complexité de l’histoire soudanaise, de l'émergence d'une entité politique unifiée au temps de la domination ottomano-égyptienne (1820-1881) jusqu'à la sécession du Sud-Soudan en 2011. Le Soudan est décrit dans les média et dans les rapports des organisations humanitaires comme le pays des dichotomies : sud contre nord, arabes contre africains, musulmans contre chrétiens. Mais cette vision est profondément trompeuse. Le Soudan, qui, avant l’indépendance toute récente du Sud, était le plus grand pays d’Afrique, comptant des dizaines de langues et des centaines de dialectes et une immense hétérogénéité dans sa géographie humaine, est plutôt le pays de la complexité. Cette journée va explorer cette complexité de deux points de vue principaux : celle de ses interactions avec l’extérieur, et celle de ses mécanismes identitaires. -

South Asia, another name for the Indian Subcontinent, is a recent concept (only about six decades old), forged outside the region in the wake of the establishment of area studies by American universities. While it may be preferred to Indian subcontinent for its political neutrality, it is nonetheless a contested concept, both externally and internally. Whether in South Asia itself or in international institutions or research centres outside the region, there is no general consensus about the countries the concept encompasses: it primarily refers to India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, the Maldives, as per the definition of the SAARC, which has however included Afghanistan lately (2005) among its members. Some would also include Burma (Myanmar) as it was a province of British India till 1937. Internally, the concept is contested on the political level but in a fairly paradoxical way: on the one hand, as a concept closely associated with India, it is in some contexts rejected by its neighbours; on the other hand, neighbouring countries (especially Nepal and Sri Lanka) have been instrumental in making the concept exist through the creation of journals, associations, and websites that mobilise the term. -

The panel will explore spatial configurations created in these contexts, questioning the forms of modernity expressed by architectural and urban projects. With the purpose of challenging a general assumption according to which Asian and especially Southeast Asian urban landscapes affected by recent developments tend toward irremediable standardization and “Westernization”, the panel will explore local expressions of modernity through the examination of projects pointing to a reinterpretation of forms of local heritages. -
