The Transnationalization of Religion through Music
The transnationalization of religion refers to the relocalization of beliefs, rituals and religious practices beyond state lines, in real or symbolic spaces, with the help of new imaginaries and narrative identities. Although the analysis of religious transnationalization has revealed the various ways religion transcends borders, the role of music in this process is rarely addressed. Yet this role is essential in the transnationalization of universal religions like Islam and Christianity. Music also contributes to the migration of local religions, neotraditionalist movements, and cults associated with a particular area, such as Haitian Voodoo, Cuban Santería, or Brazilian Candomble. Such musical phenomena, far from being new, gave birth to early religious globalizations. -

Une caractéristique commune semble pourtant émerger de ces différents mouvements sociaux : tous se sont accompagnés d’une impressionnante créativité artistique. Une fois passée la fièvre de l’événement et l’instant de l’action, que reste-t-il du souffle de la création ? L’après se travaillerait-il mieux à partir des œuvres ? Scientifique, social et culturel à la fois, le présent colloque international se situera à la jonction des pratiques et des savoirs, s’efforcera d’associer des chercheurs, des artistes et des militants. -

The Transnationalization of Religion through Music
La transnationalisation du religieux se traduit par une délocalisation et une relocalisation des croyances, rituels et pratiques religieuses qui se réalise au-delà du cadre national étatique, dans des espaces réels ou symboliques, et le plus souvent au moyen de nouveaux imaginaires et récits identitaires (Capone 2005). En étudiant la mobilité musicale et sa réception dans des contextes localisés, ce colloque se donne pour objectif de comprendre comment et sous quelle forme la musique « migre » conjointement aux cultes qu’elle accompagne, comment elle participe à la fabrique de sociétés plurielles et le rôle fondamental qu’elle joue dans l’invention et la réinvention des idées, des identités et des pratiques religieuses en contexte transnational.

This colloquium aims to promote the study of French-European influence on North American music, examine the mobility of works and musicians, and analyze the aesthetic, technical, ideological, and administrative exchanges between the two areas. These exchanges entail both the transformation of the target culture and a new contextualization of the source culture.

The Editors of African and Black Diaspora: An International Journal in partnership with the Center for Black Diaspora, DePaul University, announce a Call for Papers on “Sounds of Freedom: Music and Performance Across the Black Atlantic World” for a special issue of journal. The Editors are seeking papers that explore the nexus between music and performance over place and time, showing through myriad examples how music and performance of diverse sites of the African diaspora is critical in the making of the modern Black Atlantic living tradition.

Le colloque « Le Royal 22e Régiment sur tous les fronts » s'intéresse donc au passé, au présent et à l'avenir de cette institution militaire qui a joué un rôle important dans l'histoire du Canada et du Québec et qui connaît depuis quelques années une transformation à l'image de la société dans laquelle elle a grandi et s'est distinguée.

Cultural transfer in the Catholic world
The circulation of ideas, intercultural contacts and the transformation of institutional practices
Le concept de « transfert culturel », tel que développé par Michel Espagne et Michael Werner à la fin des années 1980, a permis à nombre de chercheurs en études littéraires, d’abord, mais aussi en histoire et en sciences sociales de reconsidérer les liens unissant les peuples et les échanges résultant de leur mises en relations. Cette approche se révèle particulièrement pertinente pour l’étude de l’histoire de l’Église catholique, car les échanges entre aires culturelles distinctes ont de tout temps marqué l’évolution du catholicisme. En s’attardant aux circulations, aux emprunts et aux hybridations entre deux ou plusieurs aires culturelles, la réflexion des chercheurs travaillant sur l’histoire de l’Église catholique au Canada dans sa dimension transnationale s’en trouve dynamisée.

Beyond French New Languages for African Diasporic Literature
In recent years, Africans from former French colonies in both the Maghreb and Sub-Saharan regions have been settling in countries other than France and writing in languages other than French. This break with the colonial and postcolonial habits of la Françafrique – the familiar bind of metropole and colony – has been going on for years and is now ripe for analysis. Writing in German, Italian, Dutch, Catalan, Spanish, English, and other languages, these authors suggest new patterns of diasporic belonging and raise new questions about the postcolonial world. Issues of immigration, language choice, cosmopolitanism, global citizenship, and world literature will be addressed.
