  Why and how to do comparative studies? The practice and research designs of comparison in the social sciences

  Bordeaux Summer School

  This international summer school departs from a paradox. Whereas an increasing number of scholars take comparison as a key dimension of their research design – a trend stimulated by several factors such as European integration, globalization, and the demands of international institutions such as the European Union or the OECD -, only a few number of training programs really take up the challenge of helping researchers to build comparisons. In order to fill this gap, we propose to bring together comparatists from various disciplines of the social sciences. We hope that an interdisciplinary setting will encourage the participants to compare and confront their analytical and methodological approaches. Particular interest will be devoted to the various forms of comparison: between nations, regions or political entities, between social groups and historical periods.
