Therapeutic action and speech

EHESS seminar, "Anthropology and psychology"

Ce séminaire poursuit son objectif de faire dialoguer l’anthropologie et la psychologie, la recherche et la clinique. Cette année, il est centré sur la notion d’action thérapeutique et tout particulièrement sur la place qu’y occupe la parole. À la lumière de ce prisme, nous nous intéresserons aux pratiques de soin, aux dispositifs mis en place et, spécifiquement, à la relation entre patient et soignant – cela aussi bien en milieu institutionnel français que dans les espaces de soin traditionnels d’Asie du Sud. La parole se situe au centre de ce questionnement sur l’action thérapeutique, elle dont l’efficacité symbolique a été développée par l’anthropologie structurale, dont « l’influence » et le pouvoir de suggestion ont été soulignés aussi bien par l’ethnopsychiatrie que par différents courants de thérapies brèves, et dont le signifiant constitue la base de l’approche psychanalytique.

L’orientalisme a pendant longtemps paru commencer avec le XIX^e siècle et la naissance des empires coloniaux. Mais une étude plus fine des textes et de la circulation des idées permet d’établir qu’il n’en fut rien, et que, depuis l’antiquité jusqu’à la fin du XVIII^e siècle, l’Occident fut le lieu d’une réception curieuse – parfois fascinée – d’un Orient plus ou moins fantasmatique, plus ou moins savant, dont les principaux « moments » de réception en Angleterre incluent la Renaissance, l’époque des Lumières et le Romantisme. Notre séminaire a pour objet l’étude tant littéraire qu’historique de cet Orient « pré-orientaliste » et « proto-orientaliste ».

Pilgrims and Politics in Pakistan

Sufism in an Age of Transition

Bringing together established and early career scholars working across a range of disciplines, including history, anthropology and political science, the Workshop is intended to deepen our understanding of Sufism in Pakistan not as a ‘degraded’ form of Islamic mysticism but as a living tradition ever responsive to wider social and political changes at the local and national levels. By doing so, it hopes to shed light on the resilience of Sufism to survive the challenge of more ‘modern’ forms of reformist Islam sweeping Pakistan as well as Sufism’s capacity to withstand the historical pressures brought to bear on it by the state’s own ‘modernist’ agenda.

History of Science, History of Text

The seminar "History of Science, History of Text" will mainly explore textual problems related to the ERC Project SAW – "Mathematical Sciences in the Ancient World". The seminar will address the following issues regarding scientific sources: how textual sources bear witness to the social groups that produced them; How textual sources testify to knowledge; history of compilations How actors structure their texts and knowledge into parts; how textual sources reflect the material environment in which they were produced.
