  Religious diversity, pluridisciplinary approach

  Dans toutes les sociétés humaines, la « diversité religieuse » constitue un fait social : toutes présentent une pluralité de croyances et de formes d’appartenance, de lieux et de pratiques cultuels. La façon dont  cette pluralité est vécue et / ou perçue est elle-même complexe, variant selon les contextes historiques et politiques. Actuellement, alors même que l'égalité est un principe juridique universel, que la tolérance est une valeur morale pluriséculaire, cette diversité est parfois menacée, notamment par le risque de mise au ban de certaines croyances et populations, au motif qu’elles sont trop éloignées de celles majoritaires.

  Financing theme studies into discrimination

  ARDIS DIM – gender, inequality, discriminations

  L'Alliance de recherche sur les discriminations (ARDIS), financée par la Région Île-de-France dans le cadre du domaine d’intérêt majeur « Genre, inégalités, discriminations » (DIM GID) propose une aide financière pour soutenir la réalisation d’études thématiques. Pour ce premier appel à projets, trois thèmes ont été retenus : les collectivités territoriales et le « label diversité » ; assistantes maternelles et religion : sélections et appariements affinitaires ; procédures d’embauche et réduction des discriminations : le cas des musiciens d’orchestre en Île-de-France.

  Risk, Dignity and Fragility: Searching for a New Ethics

  Research Program on Lost Virtues, Found Vices, 1st International Symposium

  This trans-disciplinary research project is interested in exploring the nature and structure of an ethics for the 21^st century. Ethics has most often been founded on a concept of the self as an agent that is secure, self-confident, and in control and on a view of the world as stable, unchanging and thus as knowable and predictable. Yet contemporary culture shows us a very different view of ourselves and of our environment. Caught up in a world in constant change where borders and boundaries, conditions and contexts are constantly changing and uncertainty is the norm, we find ourselves insecure, vulnerable as forces beyond our control direct and frame the moral decisions that we face. How must ethics be reconceived in light of our shifting ideals of the self and the world? Can there be an ethics under the conditions of uncertainty, flux, and instability?

  Did you mean halal?

  Islamic Normativities, Globalization and Secularization

  The study of Islamic normative dynamics will be at the heart of this conference that will focus on ‘halal’ qualification / disqualification processes in all areas: how and by whom, for whom, for what reasons objects, discourses, practices can or are actually called "halal" or "haram"? What methods, institutions, arguments of Islamic legitimation / de-legitimation are used ? What are the procedures for monitoring compliance with the standard and how and by whom are they developed or institutionalized? Proposals may question the issues of qualification and disqualification through objects, practices, behaviours qualified as halal or haram in areas such as: food, matrimonial relationships , sexualities, finance, tourism etc. We will select in priority contributions in the social sciences and humanities, history and law, based on empirical studies, archival research, comparisons and syntheses that take a deconstructive perspective.

  An Historical Perspective

  While contemporary grumblings about hospital food have become the quintessential hospital complaint, it is undeniable that a clean, warm bed, rest and the provision of food and drink, rather than medicines and therapies have always greatly increased hospital patients’ chances of recovery. Indeed diet has from the time of Galen been a central part of medical therapy. However, even if central to the day-to-day routine of hospitals, workhouses and asylums, food and drink continue to be overlooked in historical accounts of hospitalisation. This conference aims to foreground the role of food and drink in health care institutions in the past.
