Moments d’épreuve par la médiation desquels une collectivité teste ses normes et ses valeurs, l’affaire et le scandale, pour rythmer l’histoire des sociétés contemporaines, ont jusqu’à des temps récents très peu retenu l’attention des disciplines historiques. Ce colloque portera sur les formes, les fonctions et les effets du scandale et de l’affaire.

Democracy and Technology. Europe in Tension from the 19th to the 21st century
Public debate, social media demonstrations, participative assessment, technocracy and transparency: these are just some of the issues on the growing list of multiple and evolving interactions between technology and democracy in Europe since the middle of the 19th Century. The sixth Tensions of Europe conference aims historicizing and exploring these complicated links in long-term perspective. It will address key contemporary issues such as the democratization of technology and the vulnerabilities of technological democracies. The conference will close the ANR funded project « Large technical networks and democracy: innovations, practices and interested parties in long-term perspective, from 1880 to the present day ». The conference will also feature the official presentation of the Making Europe book series, more than 40 panels, and of course the traditional untraditional Tensions events – this time in Parisian style!

Empire of letters and Tigers of parchment
International Medieval Congress
Script is not a neutral communication medium. Scripts were particularly used throughout the Middle Ages to stage the idea of Empire, power and domination. The writing has the ability to connote authority and Empire and to inspire respect. On the other hand, the scriptural domain is a world in itself with its coherence and history. The idea of an ‘Empire of letters’ may have emerged within this world too. Both parts of this “empire of letters” are relevant for the palaeographical sessions on the specific thematic strand of ‘Empire’ organised at the International Medieval Congress 2014 in Leeds and sponsored by Apices and Cap Digital.

Historicising Deliberative Democracy

The last thirty years have seen the burgeoning of political and academic speeches on the merits of participative or deliberative democracy. In parallel, in occidental democracies, various systems sharing the ambition to strengthen or increase citizen participation through collective discussion on public issues are being institutionalized. These devices are often viewed today as a novel cure to the present crisis of representative governance. This panel, at the crossroads of sociology, history and political science, aims at historicizing such deliberation necessity and at redrawing the genesis of the phenomenon as speech and political practice.

Si l’histoire de l’Africa et de l’Ifriqiya doit être replacée dans un contexte méditerranéen plus vaste, il est souvent utile de varier les échelles. Ainsi, en portant le regard au plus près, il s’agira de se pencher davantage sur la Méditerranée centrale afin d’y lire et réinterpréter des relations de voisinage souvent intenses entre les régions qui composent cette dernière (Grèce, Italie, Sicile, Sardaigne, Egypte, Maghreb central) et l’Africa / l’Ifriqiya. Les récentes années ont vu l’étude de ces échanges et contacts renouvelée et leurs chronologies révisées dans le sens d’une précocité et d’une densité majeures. Au-delà des constructions politiques distinctes, les relations entre ces différents espaces qui sont documentées par les sources écrites et archéologiques n’ont cessé d’évoluer de l’Antiquité au Moyen Âge.

The study of legal documents: new approaches to papyrology and Arab diplomacy
Ces journées d'études « ILM » qui ont pour principal objectif l’étude des actes légaux d’un point de vue papyrologique et diplomatique, intéressent en premier lieu les spécialistes en tous types de documents en arabe. Qu’ils soient chercheurs en papyrologie ou en diplomatique en général, ils ne manqueront pas de tirer avantage des documents légaux et officiels traités par l’équipe du projet européen « ILM ». De même sont les bienvenus ceux dont la recherche est focalisée sur les systèmes normatifs musulmans dans leurs dimensions historique et sociologique. Ces deux intérêts combinés vont favoriser une approche croisée des documents arabes, dont sauront bénéficier les chercheurs en vue de renouveler le regard sur l’organisation politique et judiciaire du monde arabo-musulman au Moyen Âge.

Sixth Plenary Conference of Tensions of Europe
This conference will be devoted to the complex relationship between democracy and technology from a European and transnational perspective. The core of this reflection will be the complementarities and cross-fertilization that arise in the interaction of technology and democracy, but also the frictions, tensions, and paradoxes that emerge in the discourses, representations and interplay of actors. This historical conference is open to a wide range of interdisciplinary inquiry. It invites proposals for papers addressing an issue that up to now has mainly been investigated on a national basis. Focusing on circulations and appropriations of technology in a European and transnational perspective, the conference should open new ways to think and talk about the history of Europe. -

Legal, archival and institutional issues
Ce colloque international dédié au traitement des archives des dictatures, s’inscrit dans une réflexion plus large engagée sous une perspective croisée associant historiens, archivistes, juristes, sur un matériau d’archives sensibles en ce qu’elles sont produites en période de trouble, par des régimes autoritaires, États policiers ou dictatures. Il sera suivi d’un colloque sur le thème des « archives atlantiques du mauvais gouvernement des hommes (du XVe siècle à nos jours) » organisé à l’Institut des Amériques. Dans le colloque sur les archives de la dictature, il s’agira d’aborder le traitement juridique, politique et institutionnel des archives produites sous des régimes totalitaires déchus. La perspective juridique et l’interrogation sur la conciliation des différents intérêts en présence dominera : ceux des personnes (les victimes, les familles, les acteurs en général), ceux de la collectivité, l’État et les citoyens, ceux de l’histoire (les chercheurs). Comment aborder notamment les principales fonctions attachées à la conservation des archives : que conserver et comment ? Que détruire ? Quelles règles d’accessibilité de ces fonds ? Comment gérer la transition, quelles conciliations entre droit à l’oubli et droit de savoir ? Dans quels termes ordonner mémoire individuelle et mémoire collective ? Comment s’approprier et restituer cette mémoire ?
