  Democracy and Technology. Europe in Tension from the 19th to the 21st century

  Public debate, social media demonstrations, participative assessment, technocracy and transparency: these are just some of the issues on the growing list of multiple and evolving interactions between technology and democracy in Europe since the middle of the 19^th Century. The sixth Tensions of Europe conference aims historicizing and exploring these complicated links in long-term perspective. It will address key contemporary issues such as the democratization of technology and the vulnerabilities of technological democracies. The conference will close the ANR funded project « Large technical networks and democracy: innovations, practices and interested parties in long-term perspective, from 1880 to the present day ». The conference will also feature the official presentation of the Making Europe book series, more than 40 panels, and of course the traditional untraditional Tensions events – this time in Parisian style!

  Technical democracy under the challenge of the dramatic event

  La multiplication et la visibilité nouvelle des catastrophes depuis une dizaine d’années – et notamment l’attentat du 11 septembre 2001 – ont conduit au développement des travaux sur ces questions importantes pour les sciences humaines et sociales, auquel correspond un retour de l’évènement dans les recherches historiques. L’accident interpelle la démocratie technique. Il introduit du discontinu dans la perspective temporelle linéaire propre à la modernité, obligée de former la notion de risque autour de laquelle s’agencent les groupes impliqués pour maîtriser l’incertitude. L’évènement est donc structurant. Créé e t/ ou répercuté par les médias (et différemment selon les types de médias), il génère des controverses sur l’acceptabilité du risque, des tensions entre occultation et révélation ou catastrophe et sûreté.

  The History of Computing

  Revue scientifique et technique destinée à offrir un outil de synthèse aux chercheurs et industriels français en informatique, la revue Technique et science informatiques (TSI) souhaite ouvrir ses pages à l’histoire de l’informatique. À partir de 2013, TSI intégrera au fil de ses publications, un article historique ou un entretien avec un acteur éclairant l’histoire de l’informatique nationale ou internationale.
