  Les enquêtes en Grande-Bretagne, XIe-XXe siècle : savoirs et instruments de gouvernement

  Cette rencontre organisée dans le cadre du GRD 3434 « Mondes britanniques » du CNRS, a pour objectif de comprendre le rôle et le fonctionnement des enquêtes comme instruments de gouvernement en Grande-Bretagne, dans une perspective de longue durée. Cette rencontre rassemblera des spécialistes de la Grande-Bretagne et des discutant-e-s, donnant un regard français ou « continental » sur ces dispositifs.

  Retrospectives: A Postgraduate History Journal

  Retrospectives: A Postgraduate History Journal is pleased to announce the call for papers for its 2014 edition. Retrospectives is an online graduate journal run and published by postgraduate history students at the University of Warwick. Retrospectives is dedicated to the publication of original, peer-reviewed refereed articles and book reviews by postgraduate students within any historical era. It specialises on early modern to contemporary history, with a focus on the ‘non-traditional’ aspects and other aspects reflected in the University of Warwick’s research community.

  Scotland, Europe and Empire in the Age of Adam Smith and Beyond

  Hosted by the Centre Roland Mousnier, the ECSSS (Eighteenth-Century Scottish Studies Society) and the International Adam Smith Society will hold a conference at the Sorbonne in Paris, from the 3rd to the 6th of July 2013. The theme of the conference will be : Scotland, Europe and Empire in the Age of Adam Smith and Beyond. The conference will tackle the question of the role of Scotland and Adam Smith’s thought in the constitution of the British Empire (and the other empires) during the Eighteenth Century, from America to Asia.

  Manufacturiers et commerçants : produire et exporter horloges et objets de luxe au XVIIIe siècle

  Roger Smith est un historien indépendant diplômé de l’Université de Londres. En 2006, il a été élu membre de la Society of Antiquaries of London en 2006. Ses recherches et sa riche bibliographie portent sur le monde de la production et du commerce d’objets de luxe au XVIII^e siècle, en relation à la pratique horlogère et à la circulation des savoir-faire techniques. Il s’est intéressé de manière plus particulière à la maison horlogère anglo-suisse des Vulliamy, active à Londres depuis la deuxième moitié du XVIII^e siècle, et mène actuellement une étude consacrée à l’entrepreneur James Cox (1723-1800) et aux rivaux de celui-ci dans le commerce de montres et horloges entre l’Europe et l’Asie. Roger Smith collabore en outre avec de nombreux musées et maisons de vente aux enchères en tant qu’expert et conseiller ; il a notamment participé à l’exposition SingSong : Treasures from the Forbidden City qui s’est tenue au Museum Speelklok d’Utrecht en 2010-2011.
