Les écrits d’Esther (Etty) Hillesum sont pour nous un recueil precieux, constituant une documentation historique très saillante. Ils représentent un reportage au sujet du mal extrême, tel que la persécution raciale et les lagers, ainsi qu’une puissante réflexion philosophique autour de la valeur et du sens de la vie, de l'amour et de la mort. Le Colloque international « Etty hillesum. Cento anni dopo (1914-2014) » (9 et 10 décembre 2014, Université Ca' Foscari de Venise, Italie) veut tracer un bilan de l'œuvre de cet important témoin du XXe siècle.

Turning Points in French History
Society for the Study of French History 29th Annual Conference
This is a call for papers for the 29th Annual Conference of the UK and Ireland Society for the Study of French History. This conference will take place at the University of St Andrews, Scotland, UK, on 28th-30th June 2015, and will be hosted by the university’s Centre for French History and Culture. The theme of the plenary sessions will be “Turning Points in French History”. This theme has been chosen because of the number of significant anniversaries that fall in 2015 (1415 Azincourt, 1515 accession of François Ier, 1615 closing of Estates General until 1789, 1715 death of Louis XIV and accession of Louis XV, 1815 end of the Napoleonic era, 1940 fall of France).

Borders Past and Present. Materiality, Practices and Concepts
In recent years, the study of borders and boundaries has attracted the curiosity of scholars from different disciplines and informed a rich and diverse literature. With notable exceptions, most publications on the subject relate however strictly to their sub-field and discipline, paying only fleeting attention to the work produced in neighbouring disciplines. The aim of this workshop is to bring together an interdisciplinary group of scholars from the European University Institute and other European universities and research institutions who study borders and border-related phenomena from different perspectives.

Love, Sex, and War: Towards another History of 20th Century, Europe
Workshop One – Sources for Historians of Love, Sex, and War
This workshop will launch a two-year research project focusing on the history of love, sex, and war in Europe. Historian Dagmar Herzog has called the 20th century “the century of sex,” while Laura Lee Downs and Kathleen Canning consider it a time when “gender troubles” emerged. Yet, the 20th century also initiated greater equality between the sexes and increasing liberalization of sexual norms and rights. Both categories – gender and sexuality – profoundly shaped the last century. Two world wars, genocide, and other episodes of mass violence make it crucial to examine European societies from a social and cultural perspective and to ask: what role did gender and sexuality play in these events? The workshop aims to identify specific sources that explore emotional realms such as affection, desire, inhibitions, repulsion, and grief.

This session intends to explain the multiple and complex relationships between tourism and gentrification in the contemporary metropolis. Several questions arise. How does tourism gentrification manifest itself and how does it affect the urban landscapes? What are the impacts for urban design and planning? Who are the actors, the beneficiaries and the victims of tourism gentrification? How do local (tourism) actors cope with tourism gentrification phenomena? What is the impact on local economies, urban functions and services? What are the outcomes for intra-metropolitan territories? What does it mean in terms of metropolitan governance?

Représentations du pouvoir et pouvoir de l’image dans la photographie contemporaine américaine et britannique
From the power of images to images of power, this workshop will explore the representations of power and the power of representation in contemporary American and British photography. What is photography capable of doing? Whether in the form of a public person, the environment of power (emblematic places and explicit or underlying forms) or its symbolism, what is photography capable of revealing about power itself? Political, institutional, economic or social power all depend upon a system of relations or tensions between groups or individuals (accepted, rejected, questioned, expressed visually or internalized) participating in the construction of the identity, myths or memories of the American or British nations. In what manner does photography enhance or contribute to this construction or deconstruction of the notion of identity and nation?

Clase, género y construcción de la paz en el Perú: 1961-2014
Según el historiador Franklin Pease, ‘hacer una historia de la subversión en el Perú con elemental seriedad, requiere disponer de información confiable, casi nunca al alcance del investigador’. Trabajar sobre grupos alzados en armas que se organizaron en el marco de la 'lucha de clases' desde los años 1960, es tarea difícil en la medida en que significa trabajar sobre la clandestinidad. Nombrar, investigar o repensar a grupos como el ‘Partido Comunista del Perú-Sendero Luminoso’ (PCP-SL) y el Movimiento Revolucionario Tupac Amaru (MRTA) supone un peligro para el investigador: ser llamado ‘terrorista’ es común en un medio donde el discurso oficial y el discurso académico han confluido para dar una versión única. Academic entrepreneurship in History
An international survey of current research
The Departments of History of Universiteit Gent, Université Libre de Bruxelles, Université Lille 3 and Università di Bologna are jointly organizing the international conference “Academic entrepreneurship in history” on 12-13 March 2015 at the STAM city museum in Ghent, Belgium. The aim of the meeting is to bring together an international group of scholars engaged in research on the notion and practice of academic entrepreneurship from the mid-nineteenth century to the end of the twentieth century. The focus will be on the range of actions, behaviors and qualities of academic scientists and their employing institutions which can be seen as entrepreneurial in at least one of the many senses in which the entrepreneurship term has been used in the economics and business history literatures.

Special focus will be devoted to political, religious, cultural, economic, and social changes that have marked the European continent from the Middle Ages to present time, as well as the study and critical research on the issues and problems of traditional historiography (organisations and institutions, regional dimensions, behaviours, attitudes, religion, culture, etc.), and the most recent historiographical trends (world history, trans-national history, and cultural experiences).

An international conference on economic history dealing with the question "Regional producers or global players ?" will take place in Mainz on October 6-7 2014. Until now neglected, research on the economic history of the Rhineland-Palatine area will be presented. However, the conference is not limited on the history of this region - in fact, companies from this origin will be compared to producers from other regions and countries. The increasing internationalization of companies is currently an important field of research among historians. From the second half of the 19th century to World War I, the interdependence of the West European economy grew strongly. In the second half of the 20th century, we can observe another globalization push. We were able to win internationally renowned researchers for the papers. Architecture and liturgy: design autonomy and standards
The second International Seminar offers a new stage of critical reflection on the relationship between the liturgical and ecclesiastical guidelines offered by the Second Vatican Council and church architecture, and propose a reflection on what the terms of dialogue and the interdependence between architecture and liturgy are. The dogmatic constitution Sacrosanctum Concilium is a fundamentally important document in the Church's struggle for renewal with immediate and obvious repercussions on the architectural questions concerning the construction and organization of the celebratory space. Therefore, this Seminar is intended as an occasion to compare and propose various ways of seeing and experiencing the relationship between autonomy and the standard applied to the architectural design, in reference to conciliar liturgical instances.

The governance of the Atlantic ports (XIVth-XXIth century)
Policies and economic dynamics
Ports and port cities have stood out over time as important categories of historical analysis. The study of port systems and the internal dynamics of European ports, side by side with navigation circuits and international commerce has generated a vast literature.In the contexts of the first and the second globalization processes it is essential to develop crossing studies to place ports within globally articulated networks. The relationships between European, African and American Atlantic seaports are fundamental to the understanding of overall dynamics related to the economy, population, policy and culture. A wide European historiography confirms the importance of the seaport spaces and dynamics. This tends to be reinforced with innovative contributions, focused for the last decades upon port systems analysis.

La réalité palestinienne, marquée par le conflit, a le plus souvent été analysée au seul prisme de sa spécificité politique ou culturelle. Or, de nouvelles manières de vivre, de consommer et d’agir inscrites dans un registre global ont vu le jour ces dernières années et sont largement restées inexplorées. Le colloque réunira essentiellement des chercheurs et doctorants en sciences sociales et humaines travaillant sur la Palestine mais sont aussi sollicitées des recherches sur d’autres terrains (Maghreb / Moyen-Orient / Europe) dans une dimension comparative. Ce colloque entend par ailleurs confronter des approches différentes : entre art et science, recherche et action, il fera dialoguer les sciences sociales avec les travaux d’artistes, d’architectes, les pensées et modes d’action de collectifs militants et citoyens.
