Civilians at stake: mass violence in Asia and Europe from 1931 to the present
On the occasion of the seventieth anniversary of the end of World War II, the Online Encyclopedia of Mass Violence has organized an international and interdisciplinary meeting. By bringing together key innovative specialists in philosophy, political science, law and history, the conference intends to reflect on the definition and role of civilians during mass violence. Civilians are understood here as victims of bombing or as actors resisting to ground-based mass violence. The meeting focuses on World War II as a touchstone period but also tries to assess its role in the longue durée up to the present. It takes the term “world war” literally, with special emphasis on the Asian continent, aiming at the opening of new horizons leading to more globally oriented research.

Voluntary Associations in the Yugoslav Space
Relations with State and Family from the Late 19th Century to the Present
The workshop focusses on the changing relationship between voluntary associations/NGOs, the state and the family. According to traditional sociological views, civil society – and thus associations, as its most frequently evoked incarnation – are conceived as being opposed to both the state and the family, a sort of free space for collective agency escaping from the strictures of both kinship structures and of the state. More recently, scholars of civil society have convincingly shown the problems with drawing a clear-cut border between the state and VAs/NGOs, and tend to see this border as porous, shifting, and subject to negotiation.

Migrants in Global Metropolises

Religious diversity: comparative views East (Asia) and West (Europe)
Issues in diversity have become crucial all around the planet for political and social reasons. In a world whose cultural and religious plurality is expanding it nevertheless expands in a variety of forms and for somewhat different reasons: diversity in the West assumes somewhat different logics and shapes than in the East. The comparison between different forms of religious diversities therefore supposes to take into account the role of religious systems themselves and the political context in which they are embedded. It otherwise requires a parallel comparison of the logics of diversity (opposition, coexistence, hybridity, syncretism …) and the social acceptation of religions and religious relationships in their specific cultural backgrounds.

Journée d'étude - Études des sciences
History of Science, History of Text (2011-2016)
In 2015-2016, the seminar "History of Science, History of Text" will keep exploring textual problems related to the ERC Project SAW (“Mathematical Sciences in the Ancient World”) As in previous years, the seminar will address the following issues regarding scientific sources: how textual sources bear witness to the social groups that produced them; how textual sources testify to knowledge; history of compilations; how actors structure their texts and knowledge into parts; how textual sources reflect the material environment in which they were produced In line with the beginning of phase 3 of the project SAW, devoted to facets of the history of the historiography of ancient mathematics, the seminar will pay special attention to the sources attesting to work in the history of mathematics.

Droits fondamentaux, éthique relationnelle et contraintes financières
The Conference "Basic rights, relational ethics and financial constraints" will explore, from a philosophical perspective, the various ways in which basic rights, interpersonal, professional and institutional relations, and financial constraints interact. Given the gap between the generality of basic ethical principles and the norms of practice in various areas of social life, there is usually no direct or obvious way from principles to detailed and effective regulation.

Second International Conference on Uyghur Studies
2e colloque international sur les études Ouïghoures

This conference is the second attempt to bring together a broad spectrum of the international community of scholars whose research is focused on the Uyghur people’s history, culture, society.

South and east mediterranean youth policies on a tightrope
The conference brings together a series of international researchers who examine youth policies within institutional structures and at the state level in six South and East Mediterranean countries (Tunisia, Morocco, Palestine, Egypt, Lebanon and Turkey). It sheds light on the politics of youth policies, sociological and economic obstacles to becoming "adults", and questions the historical turn after the 2011 "Arab Spring". Youth policies are examined at a macro-level in the areas of employment, family, migration and spatial planning in an attempt to understand the emergence of youth as a category, oftentimes identified with a public problem. The question of how various forms of marginalization and domination such as gender, social, urban/rural, ethnic, based on citizenship, etc. intersect and generate inequalities among youth in South and East Mediterranean countries is central to inquiry.

Mapping Architectural Criticism first International Workshop
This call concerns the first of a series of three international workshops, which will take place in January 2016 (Rennes 2 University), Spring 2016 (University of Bologna) and Fall 2016 (Paris and Rennes). The aim of these three workshops is to foster scholarship on history of architectural criticism and to facilitate exchanges between scholars involved in this field of research. This first workshop is to be held at Rennes 2 University on Monday, January 18, 2016. It will deal with the relationship of criticism with "public opinion" and on the opposite side, its relation to architecture as an autonomous discipline.

Total Mobilization: Web and Social Reality
What is the web doing? What is the web? What does the web want?
The web is mobilizing human beings in impressive and unprecedented ways. In order to understand this phenomenon, we should wonder what kind of entity the web is, how it relates to and bears upon human society and culture. The conference aims at doing so by involving scholars who, in their researches, are addressing these issues from different perspectives. e.g. philosophy, cognitive sciences, anthropology, social sciences.

Journée d'étude - Études du politique
The first part of the conference will discuss the global jihad and strategies of territoiralization. The jihad narrative, rooted in the colonial period in its current interpretation refers to belonging to the umma, a global nation imagined as the basis for a new identity which, instead of relating to a territory, follows the thread of networks beyond borders. Youths who have chosen the path of jihad thus turn state territories into a cross-border space that is deterritorialized and denationalized.

Appel à contribution - Histoire
This one-day conference aims at exploring the definition(s) and contours of deviance and degeneration as it was conceived in the British Isles and North America in the 19th century. PhD students, postgraduate students and junior scholars whose research pertains to the study of deviant groups, whether self-defined or not, are particularly welcome to participate. Speakers will be invited to focus on the processes of definition of the standards of normality – whether religious, social, political, legal, medicalor sexual – as well as what those processes entailed for those who were labelled ‘deviants’. The role of scientists, doctors but also political authorities is of considerable interest in this respect, as are the ways in which normative standards were circumvented and challenged.

Appel à contribution - Époque moderne
Deuxième colloque international de la Société d'études modernistes
In continuation of the society’s inaugural conference on Modernist communities, we now propose to explore the debate over emotions in the Modernist era. We hope to foster reflection and discussion that will go beyond the paradox of a passionately anti-emotional Modernism towards a reconsideration of the large extent to which Modernism attempts to channel, remotivate, and revalue the power of emotion. -

Second European Pragmatism Conference
The conference aims to advance our understanding of the relevance of pragmatism to contemporary debates in philosophy, the humanities, the social and the natural sciences as well as in communities of practice. Pragmatism is here broadly considered as a tradition of thought stemming from philosophy but now clearly present in a number of academic fields such as sociology, law, politics, art, physics, mathematics, anthropology, history, and literature.
