    Pseudo-traduction : enjeux métafictionnels

    Revue « Interférences littéraires », n° 19, novembre 2016

Throughout literary history authors have presented their texts as translations of an imaginary original rather than as original texts of their own making. Yet, as a phenomenon that has taken on a wide variety of forms, pseudotranslation has persistently occupied a marginal position in both literary scholarship and translation studies, and still today begs more systematic study. As simulacrums, they provide a unique mode of representing and/or criticizing prevailing literary practices, and it is this metafictional dimension of pseudotranslations that we aim to address in this special issue. Since pseudotranslation is an essentially transcultural phenomenon that presupposes a (imaginary) cultural transfer, the editors wish to include case studies from a wide variety of cultural and historical backgrounds.

Old Time Accomplices: Mentors and Mentees

Mentoring in the arts, humanities, social sciences and the professional world

Despite living in societies increasingly marked by individualism and selfishness, in the modern world we see an increase in mentoring programs. Mentoring is grounded on a mutual commitment towards professional and intellectual development and forges a bond between mentor and mentee. This pattern exists in the academic, professional and private sectors, where coaches of all kinds multiply. We wish to explore the mentor-mentee relationship in an interdisciplinary context. We invite papers which explore the theme and the practice of mentoring in literature, history, art, performing arts, social sciences, and in the professional world.

Alcuinus and the Carolingian Monumental Poetry – Medieval Ekphrasis, between East and West, Antiquity and Modernity

The sessions would like to explore the formal connections between the poetic production of medieval writers and the works of art they describe, evoke or invent in these texts. The academic separations of visual studies from the textual ones have been erasing for many years the relationship existing between the two kinds of com-position. From the Vth to the end of the XIIth century, from Paulinus of Nola to Baudri of Bourgueil, a rich corpus of these texts has been composed by some of the most prestigious writers of their time and stages some of the richest works of art from medieval Europe: the wall paintings in St Gall abbey and Mainz cathedral, the Bayeux tapestry, the stained glasses in St Denis basilica…

    Theory in Love

International Comparative Literature Association XXIst Congress - session 17327

In The Politics of Friendship Derrida reflects on the question of the indecidable possibility, the “peut-être,” of love, of friendship, and of desire: “‘Je t'aime entends- tu?’; cette déclaration d'aimance hyperbolique ne pourrait donner sa chance à une politique de l'amitié que soumise à l'épreuve du peut-être, de l'indécidable” How then can we express a refusal, a no, without listening, without hearing? How can one express the divergent and differential possibilities opened by this phrase? And yet Derrida already has, in Envois, where he explores, theorizes and dramatizes a love affair, tracing the course of its refusal in the various postcards and letters which remain unsent, forever awaiting their destination. This panel concerns theory speaking in terms of love, seeking to establish the relationship between “ l’âmour” and theory.

The Paradigmatic City: Origins, Avatars, Frontiers

    Excess, Madness, Vision

    International D.H Lawrence Conference

Critics have  often referred, positively or negatively, to the various forms of excess to be found in Lawrence's writings. While some mention the "exuberant merits" of his style, praising the emotional intensity of his works, others blame him for being too prolix, too pompous, too repetitive, too frank about sex, and speak with disapproval of his  "hectic descriptions" and the "Gargantuan passions" of his characters. At the beginning of his Study of Thomas Hardy, Lawrence himself elaborated a theory of excess, which is both the very illustration of excess and one of his most visionary texts. It is, he claims,  the lack of vision, the foolishness or madness of his contemporaries, that led Lawrence to moralize and philosophize so passionately and so obstinately.

Tracing Types: Comparative Analyses of Literary and Visual Sketches (1830-1860)

This call for papers deals with nineteenth-century sketches (sometimes referred to as "panoramic literature"). It seeks to focus on the comparative analysis of these sketches, both texts and images, and trace how representations of specific types vary across sketches from different places, media and editorial contexts.

Towards a graphic culture: studying drawing

Drawing seems nowadays to know unprecedented expansion and to invest all domains of the expression and the communication: book industries, cartoons and animation movies, video games, corporate communication… And we indeed face kind of a paradox: widely present, drawing seems almost impossible to define and some philosophers like Jean-Luc Nancy even invite us to accept the "unthinkable" nature of the drawing. The international conference we organize on June 15th and 16th of this year in the villa Finaly of Firenze (Italy) does not intend to adopt similar position. Without wishing necessarily to produce a definition of the drawing, we intend to progress towards its understanding.

    L’enclave dans les mondes anglophones

Surrounded by a larger territory belonging to someone else, an enclave is a portion of territory where specific moral or social laws create a situation of isolation. The enclave is thus the privileged venue for particular phenomena that may only exist in this confined territory. It may be considered as an absolute alternative to the outside world, a utopia or a dystopia. By providing the possibility of a new start, the enclave raises the issue of escape or resistance, and brings up the problematic relationship that links it to the surrounding territory. The enclave thus creates a gap between interior and exterior, which allows it to contrast certain aspects, similar to a magnifying mirror. Beyond the territorial rupture, this symposium will explore and develop the network of complex relationships, which, from a geological, ontological and esthetic point of view, the enclave calls into question.

Two PhD positions in the Emmy-Noether junior research group on "power and influence: influencing emperors between Antiquity and the Middle Ages"

Since rulers of the Imperial Roman Period and the Early Middle Ages occupied the highest (secular) position, individuals who exerted influence on them enjoyed a great extent of power. As a consequence, there was bitter rivalry between the various agents and much thinking about legitimate and illegitimate influence. These exercises and concepts of personal influence are the topic of a new Emmy-Noether junior research group, which is offering two PhD positions.

New Perspectives on Censorship in Early Modern England

    Literature, Politics and Religion

Placed under the aegis of the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), this international conference will reassess the notion and the hermeneutics of censorship in early modern England. How was censorship organized? Did it prevent or promote creativity? Why and when did writers decide to enter "the safe territory of the oblique" (Annabel Patterson)? Participants are invited to provide a variety of interpretative answers and to develop a new understanding of how censorship refashioned the social, political and artistic life of Shakespeare's contemporaries.

    Formalism/Idealism: Comparative Literary History (1860-1960)

The colloquium at the Paris Center will make a case that the practice and theory of comparative literature in the 21st century must be accompanied by ongoing reflection on the history of the discipline.  In particular, the participants will ponder the following questions: how did Formalism (attention to artistic form, either atomized or holistic) coexist with Idealism (defined provisionally as resistance to positivism, empiricism, and even to “rationalism”) in different varieties of comparative literary history, as instantiated by these and other scholars? What kind of insight might a reconfiguration of the field that examines (rather than merely instantiating) the tension of Formalism/Idealism provide into the history of literary scholarship which customarily is divided into separate schools (literary evolutionism, Russian Formalism, Czech and French structuralism, New Criticism)? In what ways may the dilemmas of the age of the “splendeurs et misères” of comparative literature reflect on the discipline’s recent agendas?

Literature and Society in Central Asia
