  Exploring 19th and 20th centuries historiographies of mathematics in the ancient world (2015-2016)

  Seminar of the European Research Council Project "Mathematical sciences in the ancient world"

  The organization of this seminar marks the beginning of the third and last phase of the SAW project. Our aim is to explore various facets of 19^th and 20^th century historical research about ancient mathematical sciences, especially those attested to by sources written in Chinese, the languages of the Indian subcontinent and cuneiform script.

  Refugees in the City

  The Urban Studies Seminar is a joint activity of the Zentrum Moderner Orient (ZMO) and 'Europe in the Middle East - The Middle East in Europe' (EUME), a research program at the Forum Transregionale Studien, Berlin. It is part of the EUME research field, «Cities Compared». The seminar aims at presenting and discussing ongoing research of scholars working on cities in regions with Muslim societies with an emphasis on Urban Studies in a comparative perspective.

  Les relations Europe-Arabie (XIXe-XXIe siècle)

  Ce colloque international s’intéressera aux liens entre l’Europe et la péninsule Arabique à l’époque contemporaine, depuis les débuts de la mondialisation de l’âge industriel jusqu’aux derniers développements économiques et stratégiques contemporains. Leur comparaison ainsi que l’étude du contenu et de l’évolution des échanges sont un moyen de mieux comprendre ce qui relie l’Europe et la péninsule Arabique. Pour étudier à la fois le contenu des échanges et leur évolution, deux axes seront privilégiés : les relations culturelles et scientifiques en lien avec l’évolution des regards mutuels du XIX^e au XXI^e siècle ; l’évolution des relations économiques du XIX^e au XXI^e siècle.

  La Libye en transition

  Élites, société civile et segmentarités dans la reconstruction étatique

  La Libye est aujourd’hui un symbole de la complexité des bouleversements qui travaillent et redessinent la rive Sud-méditerranéenne depuis les printemps arabes. Elle se singularise à la fois par une très forte instabilité et surtout par un rare enchevêtrement de fractures multiples qui se croisent et s’alimentent. Mais au-delà, les incertitudes et les trajectoires bousculées de la transition en Libye expriment, en les exacerbant, les difficultés et les écueils du processus de mutations sociétales et politiques qui touchent l’ensemble des sociétés sud-méditerranéennes. Aussi, le colloque se propose de questionner le processus de transition en Libye en lien avec les grandes interrogations que soulève ce processus à l’échelle de tout le monde arabe.

  From the Caucasus to the Arabian Peninsula: studying domestic spaces in the Neolithic

  Under neolithisation scholars understand multiple processes of social and economic transformation which begin at different times and follow regional trends in the Near and Middle East. It is within the complex relational and spatial framework of the household that these shifts in the structure and activities of Neolithic communities are easiest to apprehend and study. The conference will therefore focus on the domestic sphere in order to highlight and understand the polymorphous nature of what we call neolithisation. Various thematic sessions will be held to shed new light on current data: “Impacts of the shift to a sedentary/semi-sedentary lifestyle”; “Organising the house and the household”; “Private space/public space”; “Acquisition, production, transformation and use”; “Eating-Moving”; “Symbolic manifestations”;“The living and the dead”.
