  Domestic, Regional, and International Trends in Islamism (2013-2015)

  Over the last years, politics in the Middle East and North Africa have been shaped by impressive reversals of fortune. Month after month, journalists and analysts have all at some point depicted liberals, Islamists, soldiers, women, jihadis, and youth as the great winners of the "Arab spring", before being later considered as likely losers. The root causes of the Muslim Brotherhood’s inability, since the fall of Muhammad Mursi in Egypt, during the second “round” of the Arab Spring, to cash in on the political capital originally accumulated thanks to their leading role in the opposition to authoritarian regimes and subsequently during post-revolutionary elections, still calls for substantial research. In parallel, the emergence of the so-called Islamic State has been a game changer, introducing new dynamics that need to be made explicit and analysed by academics.

  Partant du constat largement partagé d'une exposition aussi nombreuse que diverse des figures de martyrs dans les espaces publics de pays musulmans, cette journée d'étude se consacre à l'analyse des processus de fabrication (peintures, photographies, pochoirs, images numériques...), des supports d'affichage (murs, musées, internet) ainsi qu'à la mise en rapport de ces productions par-delà les singularités des pays, des conflits et des mythologies, pour en interroger le sens et les évolutions.

  Contested Hybrid Democracy: Endorsing or Revisiting the Liberal Model in non-Western Countries

  IPSA Istanbul 2016

  Democracy has become a worldwide reference in terms of political organization and governance. While the universal character claimed by such a model has largely been theorized from a Western point of view, the variety of uses and appropriations from non-Western countries, including emerging States, remains unexamined. Disappointed with the results brought by the transition paradigm, the hybrid regimes literature tends to assess the unequal reception of the democratic model in non-Western countries. Nevertheless, the hybrid regimes analytical frame does not exhaust the question of the inner workings of these regimes, since its scientific referential remains based on Western theories and focuses on the uncompleted democratization processes and dynamics. This panel aims at switching the analytical frame towards the reception of the democratic model in non-Western countries through an assessment of uses and reappropriations of this model by political and social actors. Non-Western countries represent an interesting reflection ground for testing appropriation-reject dialectics regarding the Western democratic model. While this model directly inspires some of these countries (India, South Africa or Turkey), it has been rejected by other countries (China and Russia). Are there emerging models of democracy or counter-democracy models in non-Western countries ? We shall address these questions related to the unequal reception of the democratic model in non-Western countries.

  Dans le prolongement du séminaire de lecture en histoire et sociologie rurales (CMH) que nous animons à l’EHESS depuis 2013, cette journée d’étude fait retour, dans le cadre du quarantième anniversaire de l’EHESS, sur la place qu’y ont occupées les études portant sur « le rural », au sens large et, inséparablement, à partir d’une analyse d’un état des lieux actuels dans ce domaine, ouvrir des pistes de réflexion et un débat sur la possibilité d’en renouveler les perspectives et les façons de faire.

  InIntermediaries, mediators, translators? Categorizing the actors in Chinese-African spaces of interaction

  Les publications sur les relations entre la Chine et les pays africains se sont multipliées ces dernières années. Pourtant, lorsqu'il s'agit  de désigner et de situer les acteurs impliqués, chinois ou africains, la plupart des auteurs privilégient la sphère de l'économique : entrepreneurs, commerçants, intermédiaires… autant de figures dont les interdépendances doivent être placées au centre de l'analyse et corrélées à d’autres paramètres. En prélude à son colloque final, prévu en septembre 2015, le programme ANR EsCA souhaite ouvrir la réflexion sur ces catégorisations afin de contribuer, à terme, à un renouvellement des outils descriptifs et conceptuels.

  L’Irasec, Institut de recherche sur l’Asie du Sud-Est contemporaine dont le siège est à Bangkok, met à concours deux bourses couplant aide à la recherche et aide à la publication. S’adressant en priorité à des doctorants en fin de thèse et à des postdoctorants, ces bourses sont destinées à reprendre des premières enquêtes de terrain en vue d’approfondir des recherches déjà engagées (chapitres de thèse etc.). Les problématiques doivent apporter une perspective originale et novatrice sur l’Asie du Sud-Est, relevant des champs disciplinaires suivants : sciences politiques, sciences économiques, sciences sociales (anthropologie, sociologie, géographie, histoire contemporaine).
