  Youth in rural Africa

  Journal Afrique Contemporaine

  This special issue of Afrique Contemporaine will analyze the living conditions of rural African youth – family life, economic situation, and path to adulthood and independence. Among all young rural Africans, this edition will pay particular attention to young farmers: their means of land and knowledge acquisition, and the new agricultural practices they pursue, among other subjects. Increasingly educated and connected rural African youth use all available resources – familial, cooperative, governmental – to build their future in agriculture or in other sectors.

  Farming systems’ crises, food insecurity and peasant resistance

  Which ways for an authentic sustainable development?

  The food issue keeps feeding concern and controversy. Rightly since the fate of a large fraction of humankind is at stake: the number of people suffering from hunger has exceeded one billion in 2009, which is intolerable, in spite of its slow current reduction. Nowadays speculating about the population growth is rather outdated, since it is practically admitted that the Earth will reach a maximum of ten billion people in the course of this century. The actual question is how to ensure a decent food supply to all of this population, on account of resources that are indeed globally limited and above all most unequally distributed. The current crisis of farming systems throughout the world is a ransom for centuries of collective irresponsibility.

  Reading workshop in history and rural sociology

  Dans le prolongement des cinq séances organisées l’an dernier (2013-2014), cet atelier de lecture entend poursuivre en 2014-2015 des discussions approfondies portant sur des textes identifiés comme significatifs ou qui font le point sur les évolutions passées et récentes des sciences sociales (histoire et sociologie en particulier, mais aussi anthropologie, science politique, géographie) – tant françaises qu’internationales – appliquées au rural. Il s’agira de continuer à s’interroger – dans la mesure du possible en présence de leurs auteur-e-s – sur l'actualité de ces textes et de réfléchir à la manière dont leurs problématiques, cadres d'analyses et méthodes peuvent être ou non réinvestis et/ou renouvelés dans des travaux de recherche contemporains portant sur la paysannerie, les mondes agricoles et ruraux plus généralement. Chaque séance associera l’intervention d’un-e chercheur-e et la présentation d'un choix de textes, d’articles ou d’extraits, suivie d’une discussion collective.

  La présente proposition de stage s’intègre dans un travail de recherche piloté par l’unité de recherche Cesaer et financé par l’Europe (FP7) et le réseau européen RURAGRI. Le projet TRUSTEE (Towards Rural Synergies and Trade-offs between Economic development and Ecosystem services) s’intéresse à différents aspects du développement économique des espaces ruraux dans un contexte de durabilité. Des équipes de recherche de 8 pays européens sont engagés dans le programme.
