    The October Revolution

    III International Congress Karl Marx

The October Revolution of 1917 was one of the most significant events of the modern era. Its historical meaning can be understood, on the one hand, within the narrative of previous revolutions – starting with the 1789 French Revolution – and of the rise of the labour movement in the nineteenth-century. On the other hand, 1917 also paved the way to several other twentieth-century events and phenomena, such as the Chinese Revolution or the post-colonial turn. On its hundredth anniversary, the Institute for Contemporary History organizes an international conference dedicated to the study and discussion of the October Revolution and its consequences.

Women and political activism against Latin American dictatorships

    “Orda” journal

The main objective of this issue is to gather works of researchers from different countries, diverse fields of knowledge and several theoretical as well as methodological perspectives, so as to feed the debate on the issues in keeping with female participation during the dictatorships of Latin America. Contributions should tackle the subject of women activists but they may also consider in a less strict sense the link between women and activism. We wish to address the issue of activism in a broad sense to include a wide range of social movements in which women have played a significant role.

Yet many African states professed “African” or scientific socialism, many African political actors used the theoretical toolbox drawn from the Marxist tradition. It offered support for the political advancement of colonial populations and the building of post-colonial States. The USSR, China, Cuba, offered ready-to-use models. Some states even tried to invent the ir own forms of African socialism, adapted to the specific conditions of Africa and true to its theoretical roots.
