Séminaire de l'Institut des sciences de la communication (ISCC) (2016-2017)
Lancé en 2010, le séminaire de l’ISCC est axé sur les sciences de la communication, les industries et l’ingénierie des connaissances, le développement des controverses et le rôle de l’expertise scientifique, l’épistémologie comparée et, plus largement, les rapports entre sciences, techniques et société. Cette rencontre est ouverte aux chercheurs, enseignants, étudiants, journalistes et professionnels que motivent les enjeux de la communication et vise à affûter les problématiques, à susciter le débat et à développer les échanges interdisciplinaires entre personnalités de formations et d’horizons différents.

PhD position in Chinese studies and cultural studies
This project will explore how young Chinese cosplayers engage with the public at large to express new identities in spaces that are heavily regulated by social and political censoring mechanisms. On the one hand, this doctoral research will explore the structural organisation of Chinese cosplay (associations, conventions); on the other hand, it will look into specific bodily performances in public spaces.

The post-tourism future and civil society
The aim of this call for papers is to elicit experiences and/or analyses of the beginning or end of tourism, as well as interpretations of the end of the differentiation between the tourist and ordinary worlds which we are currently observing. Comparisons and attempts at modelling will be welcome. The papers may be proposed by researchers, practitioners or associations and may be jointly authored. They must deal with one of the three topics described below, which are to be the subject of three successive seminars.

Conference, symposium - Prehistory and Antiquity
The presence and uses of the camel (Camelus dromedarius) between the Tigris and the Nile in the middle 1st millenium
Le dromadaire ou chameau à une bosse (Camelus dromedarius) n’est pas une espèce autochtone en Égypte, ni même au Proche-Orient ou dans la péninsule Arabique. L’animal, surnommé « vaisseau des déserts », est pourtant particulièrement bien adapté aux environnements arides et semi-arides de ces régions. Il a des utilisations multiples (transport de charge, transport de personnes, labour, course, consommation humaine etc.), mais son élevage est délicat et requiert un savoir-faire précis. Il a donc semblé opportun de réunir pour la première fois des philologues, des archéologues et des archéozoologues, spécialistes de leur discipline, pour confronter les informations et tenter de mieux cerner l’histoire du Camelus dromedarius, de son élevage et de ses utilisations dans les déserts d’Égypte, du Proche-Orient et de la péninsule Arabique, du milieu du Ier millénaire av. J.-C. à l’époque romaine.

A Realm of Memory of the Cold War
Whether or not “the entire world” was looking at Berlin, as Reuter asserted, is one of the central questions to be addressed at our conference. Starting from the “frontline city” of Berlin, we will cast our glance to West Germany and its neighboring countries in order not only to frame the Berlin Airlift as a transnational memorial of the Cold War, but also to address, from outside, the question of whether Berlin was really the international focus of the East-West conflict back then, as the press and academia so often portray it.

Après avoir conquis la péninsule Italique, Rome aspirait à la domination de tout le bassin méditerranéen ; son ambition était d’autant plus grande quand elle avait soumis Carthage qui lui servit de base au Nord de l’Afrique. En effet, Rome détruisit Carthage en 146 avant J.C. ; sa visée fut alors d’étendre son hégémonie à tout le reste du monde antique. Elle était poussée par des convictions religieuses inébranlables, à savoir que le Romain est le plus pieux de tous ; ce qui lui assure la victoire et l’investit de la mission de « civiliser le monde » en lui assurant une bonne organisation, ce qu’a exprimé Virgile plus tard : « n’oublie jamais, vaillant Romain, que tu es né pour gouverner les peuples… oblige-les à respecter la paix ». Mais cette conviction à elle seule n’est rien de plus qu’un instrument de mobilisation que Rome utilise pour accomplir ce qu’elle appelle sa « noble mission » de civiliser les peuples en imposant l’ordre romain.

La frontière a une réalité géographique et historiquement militaire. Le substantif proviendrait du provençal fronteira qui désigne d’abord le front d’une troupe militaire et, par suite, une place fortifiée faisant face à l’ennemi. Ce n’est qu’à la fin du XIVe siècle qu’il évoque une limite bordant un territoire. Depuis la révolution néolithique, sanctionnant le passage de l’homme nomade à l’homme sédentaire et, par conséquent, l’avènement de la notion de propriété individuelle, collective, puis nationale, les frontières n’ont cessé de se consolider et de se fortifier afin de protéger des richesses nouvellement accumulées.

Identities: the concept, manifestations and evolutions
The complex and polysemic notion of identity offers great opportunities for reflection. Historians, geographers, sociologists, ethnologists, political scientists, geo-politicians, economists, linguists, philosophers, semiologists, theologians..., among others, with methods specific to their discipline, analyze identity, its formation, its relationship with the territory and surrounding populations, the symbolic, written and verbal communication with group members or neighboring groups, changes over time and space. Thus, each particular identity and appears to understand it, we must analyze the highly variable combination of multiple constitutive factors themselves change over time and space.

Practices, emotions and images
Le colloque invite historiens, historiens de sciences, géographes, ethnologues, sociologues (etc.) à se pencher sur l'évolution de l'alpinisme sportif – compris au sens large en incluant l'escalade et les pratiques récentes comme le ski alpinisme ou l'alpinisme de vitesse notamment – en ce concentrant sur l'espace alpin. Il s'attachera à questionner la « culture de l'alpinisme » et les profondes mutations qu'il a connues au niveau des ses pratiques et leurs finalités en privilégiant une approche transnationale et en mettant en valeur la richesse des matériaux qui servent à l'écriture de cette histoire. Le colloque se tiendra à Salvan-Les Marécottes (Suisse) les 22-24 septembre 2016.

The third KISMIF International Conference “Keep It Simple, Make It Fast! (KISMIF) DIY Cultures, Spaces and Places” will take place in Porto, Portugal, between 18th July and 21st July 2016. The submission of abstracts for this conference is open to academic researchers working in all areas of sociology, anthropology, history, cultural economics, geography, urban planning, media and cultural studies and cognate disciplines, such as design, illustration, popular music, cinema, visual and performing arts. The KISMIF Conference 2016 is once again focused on underground music, directing its attention this time towards the analysis of DIY cultures’ relationship to space and places.

Within Europe, a relatively indeterminate contours’ space, efforts to integrate and to bound the people and the political systems have yielded tangible results in political, economic, social and cultural matters. The objectives were consensual, such as to ensure lasting peace, economic growth and global security, as well as the freedom to act, to undertake and to think. Yet some may think that the integration has been made too hastily – especially to the east, creating new differentiations: East/West, adding to an older North/South. This analytical prism however is reducing because it largely ignores internal disparities in most national territories.

The memorial markers of the army and war: the construction of a space for memory in the East
La région Grand-Est est fortement marquée, dans ses paysages et dans sa mémoire, par son passé guerrier. Zone de frontière, mais également zone de combats, la région possède un riche patrimoine militaire, constitué non seulement d'éléments matériels visibles (fortifications, casernes, monuments, zones de combat), mais également de « traces » plus diffuses (noms de rue, vitraux, plaques...), et de « marqueurs mémoriels ». On entend ici par « marqueurs mémoriels » tous les éléments qui témoignent du passé d’un groupe, d’une communauté, et qui permettent d’organiser le souvenir collectif d’une société, en intégrant l'idée de leur variabilité : acceptés et reconnus un temps, ils peuvent subir l'effacement ou devenir illisibles, pour un temps ou durablement. Leur étude est donc celle du souvenir collectif, d’une identité régionale voire nationale, et d’une potentielle mémoire commune.
