History and memory” aims to discuss the role and importance of the prison and the banishment in the framework of repression and brutality in space imperial, expression of multiple levels and manifestations of violence of political regimes in the end of the 19^th century to the third quarter of the 20^th century.

  Conflicts of memory: arts, history, commemorations

  This conference will focus not only on historical events which fuel conflicting memories, but also on works of art – including those produced at the margins of institutions – which encourage or undermine the consensual interpretations of the past. Do artworks promoting a reinterpretation of the past help foster a new type of relationship between the present and the past? Do they open onto a different future? Some works spark off debates and suggest that memory is imbued with potentially irreconcilable sentiments. Historical materials and artworks convey this tension, articulating the gap between dominant and dominated memories. Does art help resolve conflicts or does it perpetuate them? Comparing different artists’ original takes on similar historical events may help us better understand the stakes behind conflicting memories.

  Civilians and military in European territorial administration from the late 18th century to the First World War

  Des régions et des populations entières sont directement gouvernées par des militaires, comme c’est le cas par exemple dans plusieurs espaces périphériques de l’Empire russe soumis à des régimes d’exception. Dans d’autres cas, civils et militaires partagent l’autorité sur un territoire et entretiennent des relations de coopération ou de rivalité. L'objectif de ce colloque consiste à cartographier les situations existantes et leurs évolutions au cours d'un long XIX^e siècle, en lien avec le processus plus ou moins heurté de démocratisation ou au moins d'aspirations libérales/démocratiques et à tenter d'analyser ce que cette relation complexe avec les militaires possède comme effets dans les pratiques et la culture professionnelle des préfets, gouverneurs, Statthalter etc.

  Through integrating a diversity of methods and situations  (parties, associations, unions, NGOs, and religious groups, in democratic or authoritarian contexts), this symposium aims to grasp the logic behind the disappointment or frustration expressed in activist groups—whether or not it leads to defection. Following Bourdieu in La misère du monde, it is a question of proposing an alternative to psychologizing descriptions of these forms of malaise, to understand  and objectify the mechanisms.

  Le renouveau de la philosophie politique, à partir des années soixante et soixante-dix, a été fortement lié à la critique des phénomènes totalitaires et à une prise de distance polémique à l’égard des diverses philosophies de l’histoire ou d’une certaine pratique des sciences sociales. Que signifie dès lors, pour la philosophie politique, l’éloignement progressif du moment anti-totalitaire qui en avait favorisé la réémergence ? Quelle est son rôle possible dans la connaissance des dynamiques propres des sociétés modernes et dans les débats sur les méthodes qui peuvent fonder cette connaissance ? Quel éclairage peut-elle apporter dans les réflexions normatives sur la démocratie et les divers défis auxquels font face les sociétés modernes ?
