The history and philosophy of mathematics
The seminar is the meeting point between different SPHERE (Science, philosophie, histoire) teams that are interested in mathematics. It fosters dialogue between philosophers and historians of mathematics while focusing on textual sources. Speakers are encouraged to make their sources available to the participants.

This monthly seminar will aim to invite researchers to come and present their work in progress or recently published that address the “Arab mathematics”, understood in a broad sense to be studied not only mathematics itself, but science “mathematized” of the era, such as astronomy, optics and static; Furthermore, we do not restrict themselves to only written in Arabic mathematics, but we can address their writings in other languages extensions, like Latin, Hebrew and Farsi.

Dans le cadre de sa triennale d’art contemporain « April Dapsilis », qui portera cette année sur « Le Végétal », la Galerie Le point Fort désire éditer un catalogue faisant état de l’actualité de la recherche à ce sujet, qui approfondira les questions relatives à la place et aux acceptations possibles de la notion de « végétal » dans l’art contemporain. Si la Nature fut, plusieurs siècles durant, enjeu de l’invention mimétique et de la sublimation du réel tout à la fois, et en tant que telle modèle idéel des Beaux-Arts, sa position, à l’aune du XXIe siècle, reste à définir. L’abandon des académismes au siècle dernier, tout comme l’arrivée de nouveaux matériaux dans le champ de l’art, ont remis en question le modèle en place et fait vaciller ses certitudes.

Milieu: environment and habitat
Depuis que la biologie lamarckienne a postulé l’influence des milieux de vie pour l’évolution des espèces zoologiques et que le positivisme a repris cette notion pour en faire une charnière entre le biologique et le social, elle a trouvé nombre d’applications dans les domaines les plus disparates – de la technologie à la biologie, de l’ethnologie aux sciences politiques, jusqu’à l’esthétique et aux théories de la communication. À l’heure actuelle, il manque par contre un nom commun capable de montrer le fil rouge et la solidarité parmi ces perspectives, leur unité synthétique. Le présent colloque entend justement repérer ce fil rouge et lui donner le nom de « milieu ».

Life and its shapes for people suffering from chronic mental issues in and after psychiatry
La psychiatrie contemporaine est traversée par d’importantes lignes de tension qui opposent différentes conceptions de ce que sont un trouble et un malade psychiatriques, de ce qu’il faudrait entreprendre pour permettre aux personnes concernées d’accéder à une vie meilleure, et enfin de la façon de définir cette vie. L’objectif de ce colloque est de cerner les façons par lesquelles une perspective de sciences humaines et sociales peut aider à mieux décrire et comprendre les pratiques quotidiennes, les discours théoriques, les espaces, les acteurs (avec une attention particulière portée aux personnes malades), afin d’en dégager les conceptions de la vie et du vivant humain qui y évoluent et s’y entrechoquent parfois, formant ainsi le paysage normatif complexe des mondes de la psychiatrie contemporaine.

Theodor Lipps (1851-1914): the work, its context and posterity - interdisciplinary perspectives
Une perspective interdisciplinaire
Cette journée d'étude se propose de réexaminer la pensée de Theodor Lipps (1851-1914), philosophe, psychologue et esthéticien, qui fut un penseur majeur de l'Allemagne de la fin du XIXe et du début du XXe siècle. Souvent cité pour ses travaux sur « l'empathie » (terme approximatif pour « Einfühlung »), Lipps demeure un auteur très mal connu dont l'œuvre a été étonnamment négligée par l'historiographie. On réunira, pour la première fois, des spécialistes de l'auteur qui, sur la base d'approches méthodologique variées, s'attacheront à revisiter ces thèmes typiquement lippsiens que sont l'esthétique, la psychologie, la théorie de la connaissance et la logique, mais aussi des aspects moins connus de sa pensée comme l'éthique, les sciences du langage ou l'histoire de l'art. Ceci devrait permettre de mieux comprendre les tenants et les aboutissants d'une œuvre sophistiquée et la manière dont elle s'inscrit dans son contexte scientifique et philosophique, ainsi que de souligner la pertinence des idées lippsiennes pour la recherche actuelle. On espère ainsi contribuer à la réhabilitation de la figure de Lipps et à la réévaluation de sa pensée, tout en dressant un état des lieux de ce champ de recherche inchoatif que sont les « études lippsiennes ».

Ce numéro de Terrain propose de prendre l’orgasme pour point de départ analytique, de resituer les quêtes du ressenti dans une perspective historique et culturelle plus large, et de renouveler notre regard sur les modalités diverses par lesquelles la jouissance orgastique s’obtient et se cultive (ou pas) dans les contextes culturels les plus variés.

Abraham Ibn Ezra, a Twelfth-Century Polymath who Straddled Arabic, Hebrew and Latin Culture
In the middle of the eighth century, with the completion of the Islamic conquest of the eastern, northern and part of the western shores of the Mediterranean, Jews managed to successfully integrate into the ruling society without losing their religious and national identity. They willingly adopted the Arabic language, spoke Arabic fluently, wrote Arabic in Hebrew letters (Judeo-Arabic), and employed Arabic in the composition of their literary works. The twelfth century witnessed a cultural phenomenon that saw Jewish scholars gradually abandon the Arabic language and adopt Hebrew, previously used almost exclusively for religious and liturgical purposes, for the first time as a vehicle for the expression of secular and scientific ideas.

Life between construction and destruction: Forms, rules and norms
Aside from the biological processes to which it is subjected from birth to death, human existence is characterized by the permanent effort all individuals and groups make to influence and control these processes, in order to live together. Whether occurring during a rite of passage or whether part of the interactions of everyday life, this construction invites us to question the various manners forms are made – be them “Life Forms” or “Forms of Life” – by carefully looking at the diversity of processes through which norms and rules become established .

Since its birth, logic has been concerned with the study of correct reasonings or, more specifically, of proofs. A proof should have the epistemic power to provide us with justification for the judgement or assertion which it ends with. This power is, from a different point of view, the power to compel one to accept the conclusion of the proof. Which forms of reasoning can be said to have such power? And above all, how can they exert an epistemic compulsion? According to Descartes, a correct reasoning is nothing but a chain of valid inferences. The epistemic power of proofs should therefore depend on the epistemic power of valid inferences. The problem then becomes: what is an inference? And why valid inferences have an epistemic force? These question, far from being psychological in nature, involve epistemology, logic and mathematics.

Form und Leben. Morphologie als Paradigma zwischen Philosophie und Wissenschaft
Tagung des DFG-Netzwerks “Morphologie als Paradigma” in Zusammenarbeit mit dem ZfL Berlin
Die Tagung eröffnet die Forschung zum Begriff der Morphologie im Rahmen des DFG-Netzwerks »Morphologie als Paradigma«. Im Horizont der namensgebenden These werden hier zur ersten Orientierung kultur- und naturphilosophische sowie poetologische und lebenswissenschaftliche Verwendungen von morphologischen Modellen ins Gespräch gebracht. Dabei soll zum einen der Modellfunktion der Morphologie bei Ernst Cassirer, zum anderen der Frage nach Parallelen bis in die moderne funktionsbiologische Disziplin Raum gegeben werden. Letztlich steht damit in kritischer Auseinandersetzung auch zur Debatte, ob hier möglicherweise ein Ansatzpunkt zur Redefinition der Aufgaben und Methoden der Kulturphilosophie liegt.

SW4SH 2016: Second International Workshop
Classicists and historians are interested in developing textual databases, in order to gather and explore large amounts of primary source materials. For a long time, they mainly focused on text digitization and markup. They only recently decided to try to explore the possibility of transferring some analytical processes they previously thought incompatible with automation to knowledge engineering systems, thus taking advantage of the growing set of tools and techniques based on the languages and standards of the semantic Web, such as linked data, ontologies, and automated reasoning. SW4SH 2016 aims to provide a leading international and interdisciplinary forum for disseminating the latest research in the field of Semantic Web for the preservation and exploitation of our scientific heritage, the study of the history of ideas and their transmission.

Powers of Imagination. Historical Approach
The concept of imagination is today seen as as a legitimate object of study, having long been discredited by scientific research. However, in modern and contemporary literature, imagination is generally considered in a negative way, as a mental faculty that can cause disease, error, illusion or sin. By cons, its role was very important, because the imagination formed the necessary link between body and soul. So that was the preferred place to act to perform bodily healing as well as spiritual. We would go against this idea of imagination by studying intellectual tradition and alternative and misunderstood practice. Since the XIIth and XIIIth centuries until the early XIXth century, thinkers and practitioners from a diverse set of disciplines, expressing themselves from different institutional positions, supported the idea that imagination has great powers on the body and on the body and mind of others.
