Populisms in Central and Eastern Europe in the 20th Century

Since the 1990s, several political movements qualified as “populist” have emerged in Central and Eastern Europe, drawing the attention of political scientists. If we want to understand why these movements exercise such attraction and why they are so relentless in this space, it is necessary to cross the study of current politics with the analysis of long term developments.

Sedition and Revolt in Modern European Political Thought

As part of the ANR project “Cultures of Revolts and revolutions in Europe”, we wish to bring together international contributors in a discussion of the european political thought brought about by various uprisings between the end of the Middle Ages and the modern era, whether it be reflections over a particular event, or more general considerations over the causes of sedition and protest movements, the means to prevent or suppress new episodes, and their adverse – or regenerative – effects.

The seminar: a new subject for the history of political ideas

14th conference of the Association française de science politique (AFSP) 2017 - Theme session no.74

    The libertarian challenge

The Left and nationalism in Europe

The tragic attacks in Paris on 7 January and 13 November 2015 have engendered vivid debates about national identity and national culture in France, and accelerated the promotion of patriotism by the socialist government. At the European level, whereas the death of nations has been predicted along with the triumph of globalisation, nations and nationalism make a spectacular come back in public debates, and put most European left-wing parties in an embarrassing position.

In the aftermath of world war two, the Left gradually became suspicious of references to the nation, traditionally associated with rightwing ideologies. Yet in a time of identity debates and persistent collective attachment to nations, patriotism, sovereignty and nationalism are also increasingly used as political arguments.

    Freedom of expression

Islamic World, Byzantium and Western Europe. Religious Elites and their criticism of power

The empires of the 8th Century (Western Europe, Byzantium, Islam) are governed in the name of religious principles and with the support of religious elites; however, these elites can criticize the political powers on behalf of their intellectual proficiency and religious responsibilities. This meeting aims the elucidation of political and religious conditions that allow, restrict and of course instrumentalize this freedom of speech. Actually, to let say may be the act of a prince who can allow criticism without being weakened, but rather reinforced by it. An intransigent prophet can use his freedom of expression – but as a courtier can. The examination of concrete means of expression of political criticism (treaties, letters, Mirrors, historiography, exegesis, sermons, hagiography etc.) must lead us to a rigorous comparative point of view: in these three areas, what are the differences in terms of freedom of criticism, its effectiveness and political use?
