Adaptation and Resilience to Droughts
Historical Perspectives in Europe and beyond
Amongst existing research on environmental history and historical climatology, few is focused on droughts.This symposium will give us the chance of exploring a relatively new topic whose contributions in the international research community are still very diffuse. It aims to bring together researchers working on historical droughts mainly in France and Europe. Oral presentations illuminating adaptation and resilience of societies to droughts periods will be particularly appreciated.

Milieu: environment and habitat
Depuis que la biologie lamarckienne a postulé l’influence des milieux de vie pour l’évolution des espèces zoologiques et que le positivisme a repris cette notion pour en faire une charnière entre le biologique et le social, elle a trouvé nombre d’applications dans les domaines les plus disparates – de la technologie à la biologie, de l’ethnologie aux sciences politiques, jusqu’à l’esthétique et aux théories de la communication. À l’heure actuelle, il manque par contre un nom commun capable de montrer le fil rouge et la solidarité parmi ces perspectives, leur unité synthétique. Le présent colloque entend justement repérer ce fil rouge et lui donner le nom de « milieu ».

Cahiers Thématiques n°17, Laboratoire conception, territoire, histoire (LaCTH)
Le laboratoire de recherche de l’École nationale supérieure d’architecture et de paysage de Lille (LACTH / Laboratoire conception, territoire, histoire) publie annuellement les Cahiers thématiques. En convoquant tout à la fois la figure géomorphologique de la plaine, la topologie du plat, et la dimension représentationnelle des plans, le dix-septième numéro des Cahiers Thématiques, qui paraîtra en octobre 2017, voudrait rassembler des contributions interrogeant d’hypothétiques relations entre la planéité et la planification.

Researcher in the processing and analysis of quantitative data
Dans le cadre d’un projet de recherche sur les espaces partagés entre usagers récréatifs et faune sauvage, des enquêtes quantitatives auprès de pratiquants d’activités récréatives (randonnée estivale et hivernale et chasse) ont été menées. L’ingénieur d'étude participera au traitement, à l’appariement et à la valorisation de ces enquêtes quantitatives déjà constituées. La maîtrise des logiciels sphinx et ethnos est fortement recommandée. L’ingénieur sera intégré dans une équipe d’enseignants-chercheurs du laboratoire EDYTEM (UMR CNRS – Université Savoie Mont-Blanc) et sera amené à communiquer régulièrement avec les différents chercheurs du projet.

Focus: Rural planning in Morocco – 20th century
MODSCAPES deals with rural landscapes produced by large-scale agricultural development and colonization schemes planned in the 20th century throughout Europe and beyond. Conceived in different political and ideological contexts, such schemes were pivotal to nation-building and state-building policies, and to the modernization of the countryside. They provided a testing ground for the ideas and tools of environmental and social scientists, architects, engineers, planners, landscape architects and artists, which converged around a shared challenge.

L'accord-cadre Culture-CNRS 2016-2020
Le ministère de la Culture et de la Communication (MCC) et le Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS) développent une politique scientifique partagée sur des thématiques communes faisant appel à de multiples domaines de la science, avec une forte prise en compte de l’interdisciplinarité. Ainsi, sciences humaines et sociales, chimie, physique, mathématiques, écologie, géologie ou sciences du numérique contribuent au dynamisme de la recherche dans les domaines du patrimoine, de la création, des médias et des industries culturelles. Cette politique est formalisée depuis 1992 par un accord-cadre, régulièrement renouvelé.

Geoarchaeology, defined as the application of geosciences and geographical methods to prehistory, archaeology, and history, is now widely applied to study key subjects such as occupation patterns, territory and site exploitation, palaeoclimatic, palaeoenvironemental, and palaeogeographical changes, as well as anthropogenic impacts and system responses. The multidisciplinary and multiscalar dimensions of geoarchaeological approaches have encouraged continuous development and innovation of methods and approaches that have opened new possibilities for explorations in geographical sectors previously inaccessible, the development of large-scale data acquisitions and treatment, and also the development of microscopic scale analysis precision. This session will highlight global research in geoarchaeology with particular emphasis on innovative methods or cutting edge research using established approaches.

Historical and Geographical Perspectives
Great natural disasters which have struck populations (floods, hurricanes, cyclones, typhoons, earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis, massive droughts, etc.) are part of the intricate history of human communities and their relationship with their environment, contributing to social and cultural changes within these communities. This call for papers focuses on a multidisciplinary approach and suggests that applicants: Study and investigate the various responses given to disasters in ancient and modern times; Analyze the evolution of public policies dealing with natural risks and their consequences on land planning; Study long term factors of adaptation to risk which reveal a territory’s resilience; Provide a specific interest in coastal regions.

Ecosystem services: their contributions and relevance in urban environments
First mentioned in the 1970 MIT report, the concept of ecosystem services was popularized by the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA, 2005). It’s now used and claimed by many researchers. But numerous questions are still without answer. The thought needs a disciplinary, methodological and epistemological mixing, from ecology to anthropology and from basic research to its territorial application. This symposium is thus aimed at researchers of all disciplines, knowing that its objective is to question the ecosystem services concept in urban environments, with a particular emphasis on its cultural input.

The "Face" of First World War Battlefields and Battles
The centenary in 2016 of the two iconic battles of the First World War – Verdun and the Somme – leads us to reconsider battles and battlefields in the historiography of the First World War. Since John Keegan’s pioneering Face of Battle (1976), generations of historians have expanded our understanding of the experience of combat, as well as our knowledge of the literary and artistic representations of the battlefield. The way we think about the legacy of battles in the memory of the First World War around the world, too, has changed. Our week in Verdun and Péronne will not only give us time to reflect on the current state of research on the battles of the First World War and discover the most recent advancements in battlefield archeology and environmental history of warfare, but also confront these readings with on-the-ground visits to the sites studied.

Research program looking at institutions and law in former Savoie states (PRIDAES 10)
À l’heure d’une réflexion planétaire sur la préservation du patrimoine naturel et environnemental, dans une perspective de développement durable, et lorsqu’il s’agit de promouvoir des solutions globales de surveillance environnementale et de gestion des risques, le droit apparaît comme un mécanisme d’impulsion de nouvelles règles de surveillance et de valorisation raisonnée des ressources. Or, l’élaboration de ces règles peut s’enrichir de solutions et d’expériences passées figurant dans des documents juridiques parmi lesquels les statuts, bans et règlements champêtres constituent une source d’une richesse insoupçonnée. De tels règlements, qui sont de véritables outils de gestion durable des ressources environnementales, relèvent aujourd’hui en France d’un champ historiographique peu connu et donc peu exploité.

Occupation, exploitation et gestion des milieux palustres de l’Antiquité à nos jours
Le soixantième congrès de la Fédération historique de Provence, qui se déroulera à Saint-Tropez les 4 et 5 novembre 2016, abordera les relations complexes que les sociétés humaines ont entretenu avec les étangs, les marais et les deltas en Provence de l’Antiquité à nos jours. Bien que souvent perçus comme répulsifs, les milieux palustres ont longtemps été essentiels à la vie de beaucoup de communautés provençales du fait des ressources naturelles disponibles. Si ces liens ont déjà fait l’objet de travaux, des interrogations persistent au sujet de la dynamique de ces espaces, particulièrement pour l’arrière-pays.
