Qualifying and Quantifying Parliamentary Activity: Data, Methods and Practices

Congrès de l'Association française de science politique (AFSP) 2017 – Section thématique 38

Parliamentary activity is far from being a neglected topic in political science: on the contrary, enough research exists to allow for the confrontation of concurrent hypotheses on the nature, the functioning and the logics of what parliamentarians do. However, our review of that research reveals that it falls short of fully taking into account the qualification and quantification of newer legislative data sources, made available to researchers through digital technology and its implementation by parliamentary services. In light of that review, this thematic panel offers to establish a general review of the ways in which political science research conceptualises both the qualification and quantification of parliamentary activity.

Sedition and Revolt in Modern European Political Thought

As part of the ANR project “Cultures of Revolts and revolutions in Europe”, we wish to bring together international contributors in a discussion of the european political thought brought about by various uprisings between the end of the Middle Ages and the modern era, whether it be reflections over a particular event, or more general considerations over the causes of sedition and protest movements, the means to prevent or suppress new episodes, and their adverse – or regenerative – effects.

Political uses and representations of the night from the Revolution to the present day

Networks and international solidarity in the face of repression in ports and at sea

    Third Jules Durand study day

The international conference “International networks and solidarity in the face of repression in harbors and at sea” will examine cases of repression and solidarity, beginning with the case of Jules Durand, a Havrais coal porter whose frameup and death penalty triggered a movement of protest on several continents in 1910. Comparable events took place before and after that date, in ports and at sea throughout the world. What do they tell us about the culture and networks of the port and maritime world? The conference is inspired by the Maritime Labor History Network founded on December 15, 2015, during the European Labor History Network in Turin.
