  Operative knowledges of matter, from Renaissance to industrialization

  Following the renewal of the history of Technology and of the history of chemistry, this Research Seminar intends to explore operative knowledge in chemistry in connection with several fields including economics, political management, consumption and production processes. It seeks to shed a light, since the Early modern period, on various configurations where experimentation, exploration, transformation of Matter were held, through a wide range of technical devices.

  While historians should take into account the movements in space that constantly transform sciences, they should not lose sight of the specific locations dedicated to the daily work of scientists. In scientific facilities (museums, laboratories, hospitals, etc.), modern scientists use their research instruments, meet with members of their networks, teach, and interact with various actors from outside of their scientific community. Participants in this symposium will seek how to write the history of this dynamic between circulation and institutions of science.

  A social history of international relations in the 18th century - regional phenomena

  Des phénomènes régionaux

  L’histoire des relations internationales ne saurait se réduire à celle de la diplomatie ; de récents travaux ont élargi son champ d’étude traditionnel afin de prendre en compte les logiques sociales des sociétés de l’époque moderne. Cette nouvelle histoire des relations internationales a particulièrement su mettre en valeur la diversité des acteurs institutionnels et non-institutionnels – ambassadeurs, consuls, marchants, interprètes, francs-maçons ou pirates – impliqués dans les différents processus de négociation. De plus, l’essor de « milieux internationaux » ainsi que l’intégration locale des diplomates via le développement de réseaux et de patronages ont été particulièrement mis au jour. L’histoire sociale de la diplomatie rencontre alors l’histoire des diasporas marchandes qui elle aussi porte une attention particulière aux interactions à l’œuvre entre la diplomatie, le commerce et le savoir dont les marchants, les interprètes et les hommes d’église sont les principaux vecteurs. Reconnaissant cela comme point de départ, ces journées d’étude entendent confronter, partager et discuter les récentes problématiques de l’histoire internationale du XVIII^e siècle et ses approches sociales.
