“Wabi-sabi” (侘寂): Imperfection, incompleteness and impermanence in organizational life
Standing conference on organisational symbolism (SCOS conference)
Wabi-sabi is an approach to life based on accepting the transience and imperfection of the world. As a Japanese aesthetic derived from Buddhism, wabi-sabi embraces the wisdom that comes from perceiving beauty in impermanence and incompleteness. What might such advocacy of the harmony to found in the flawed, faulty, and weathered have to do with formal organisations, obsessed as they seemingly are with continually striving for perfection? The very ideal of perfection, as an antithesis of wabi-sabi, is embedded in managerial efforts as diverse as striving for continuous improvement, setting “stretch” targets, managing the performance of ideal employees, promoting organizational cultures of excellence, and even the romanticized perfect bodies of employees.

Third international conference of young urban researchers (TICYUrb)
The Third international conference of young urban researchers (TICYURB) is a collaborative effort of the Centre for Research and Studies in Sociology (CIES-IUL), the Research Center on Socioeconomic Change and Territory (DINAMIA’CET-IUL), the Interdisciplinar Center of Social Sciences (CICS.NOVA), the Institute of Sociology – University of Porto (ISUP) and the School of Architecture of the University of Sheffield (SSoA). We encourage the submission of theoretical and empirical works about these topics. TICYUrb wish to act as a bridge between social, human, natural and all other scientific domains, so every paper will be welcomed and accepted for consideration.

Journal transition from subscription model to open access

Serial crisis, sky-rocketing subscription prices as well as more and more widespread and powerful OA mandates have pushed many publishers to rethink the finance of publishing the journals. Considering a switch calls out numerous challenges but it is a path more and more travelled – and importantly so an economically – sustainable and one with long-term benefits – not only for readers, but also for authors and the journal owners, too. In 2014 De Gruyter converted 14 journals to OA – this webinar looks at overarching strategies for journal transition from subs to OA – including current OA publishing landscape and single factors (like managing submissions, citations and funding) that play a role during the process. Is it worth it? Who will foot the bill? What to expect? And how to bring the EAB on board? The introductory one-hour webinar is built around three sections to allow participants to work out the flipping strategy for their publication and to timely and reasonably plan the change.

What's more, even if, mega events (Olympic Games, FIFA World Cups) or other largescale events (World Championships in some sports, major tennis tournaments, etc.) had been drawing attention for a long time, it now seems to be obvious that small-scale events carry diverse benefits for their host towns too. The cost of their organization is lower, the required facilities are less expensive to construct and also to maintain after the event, and these can then be used by the local residents.

Understanding and stimulating social sciences and humanities impact and engagement with society
Training school
This training school provides participants with insights into the theories and practices of stimulating impact creation from social sciences and humanities research. It will focuses on three specific dimensions. Firstly, creating a conceptual understanding on the specificities of social sciences and humanities (SSH) impact and non-linear impact models. Secondly, alternative appropriate policy frameworks for maximising SSH impact. Finally, we will explore ways of supporting scholarly practices to optimise the creation of impact through SSH research, and capturing this with evaluation systems.

This guest-edited special issue of French History aims to showcase innovative perspectives on the French experience of the First World War. It will focus on the political dimensions of military operations and on the contested process of social and cultural mobilization. It will also consider how France and the French came to terms with the fraught process of demobilization, and dealt with the multifaceted legacies of the conflict across the country and its empire.

Inter-disciplinary Approaches and (to) Political Science
PhD Symposium of the Cyprus Association of Political Science
The Symposium aims at giving the opportunity to PhD students based in Cyprus as well as abroad who are interested in inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary approaches in the social sciences to present their work, critically discuss the work of their peers, as well as engage in a process of learning and developing further their ideas, skills and previous research. Particularly encouraged to attend are those who are motivated to integrate political science with other disciplines, such as sociology, anthropology, social geography, social psychology, economics and history or those whose work is relevant beyond their immediate discipline. Three questions drive the collective explorations that constitute the Symposium’s logic. Are there connections between political science and other social sciences that remain unexplored so far? In which ways can the doctoral and further study of politics benefit and be benefitted by inter-disciplinary approaches? How can debates around research design, methods and more broadly the organization of scientific study be cross-fertilized most efficiently across the social sciences?

The interdisciplinary conference « Child and Teen Consumption » aims to facilitate in-depth dialogue between researchers from various disciplines: management, psychology, sociology, information and communication, anthropology, history, educational sciences, law, etc. Whilst the 8th conference will aim to continue interdisciplinary research and dialogue on broad themes related to children and young people as consumers, the theme of the 2018 conference will be « Cultural and Creative Industries of Childhood and Youth » in order to reflect its location in Angoulême and the growing research and public policy interest in this topic. The conference aims to highlight research in this domaine and invites producers of cultural material to bring their views to the debate.

Created in 1975 upon the initiative of Fernand Braudel, in collaboration with the French Secretary of State for Universities, Department for Higher Education and Research, the DEA Programme (Directeurs d’Études Associés, or Associate Research Directors) is the oldest international mobility programme at Fondation Maison des sciences de l’homme. It provides funding to invite, from four to six weeks, international professors and senior researchers with a PhD, or equivalent, working in institutions of higher education and research, from all across the globe to come in France and enables them to carry out work in France (field enquiries, library work and archives).

Consequently, they constitute one of the first objects of study for both economics and philosophy, and more broadly for the social sciences.

Cameroon and its former tutors
Researches in international relations show various results on the domination nature of relations between the tutelary power of a country and its socio-economic fate. Under the prism of these dominant-dominated relations, it seemed judicious and timely to analyze the nature of the multiform relationships between Cameroon and its former tutelary powers, as well as the dynamics recorded in bilateral relations in a context of globalization. The purpose of these analyzes is to understand better the processes that have structured these captive relationships and to explore its patterns of deconstruction of dependence.

First international network of Michelin cities
The development of green, ecological city or Eco-city has been introduced as a mean to support sustainable urban development within a social, economic, environmental and demographic con-text (Tsolakis, Anthopoulos, 2015). The Eco-city concept was introduced by Urban Ecology, a non profit organization that was founded in 1975 by Richard Register (Roseland, 1997). An Eco-city ensures the well-being of its citizens via a holistic urban planning and management approach with the aim of eliminating waste and emissions (Register, 1987). From a systemic point of view, an eco-city can be described like a set of different complex sub-system that need to be associated or reconnected in order to deli-ver the desired outcomes (Diemer, Morales, 2016).
