O colóquio O Gesto e a Crença, organizado no âmbito das atividades do grupo Sociabilidades e Práticas Religiosas (CITCEM), pretende ser uma plataforma de debate internacional e interdisciplinar para jovens investigadores que desenvolvam o seu trabalho no âmbito dos Estudos de Religião. Com o intuito de difundir novas perspetivas sobre as diversas vivências do religioso, este colóquio encontra-se aberto a contributos das mais diversas áreas das Ciências Sociais e Humanas, de modo a desenvolver campos de análise plurais e comparativos.

For its 16th annual symposium, the International Medieval Society Paris invites scholarly papers on any aspect of time in the Middle Ages. Papers may deal with the experience or exploitation of time, its reckoning or measuring, its inscription, its theorization, or the question of how or why or whether we should demarcate the “Middle Ages.” Papers focusing on historical or cultural material from medieval France or post-Roman Gaul, or on texts written in medieval French or Occitan, are particularly encouraged, but compelling papers on other material will also be considered.

Si la modernité est incarnée en Occident par la rationalisation de l’État et de la société qui met à bas les mythes de la tradition et fait s’effondrer l’autorité de la religion et du pouvoir absolu, elle s’exprime dans l’Empire du Milieu d’une autre façon et sous une autre forme. Depuis les guerres de l’Opium au milieu du XIXe siècle, la Chine se trouve sous l’influence massive du monde occidental, et prend l’Occident comme modèle à suivre pour se moderniser. Mais le processus de modernisation de la Chine est cependant marqué par le rejet d’une occidentalisation totale. La modernité occidentale semble étrangère aux Chinois, alors que ces derniers l’ont en réalité adaptée aux circonstances propres à leur pays. Cette journée d’étude vise à étudier les divers aspects de la question de la modernité dans la Chine d’hier et d’aujourd’hui, afin de s’interroger sur les différentes formes de la modernisation « à la chinoise », au niveau politique, dans la société, dans la pensée, dans la littérature, dans les arts et dans la religion.

ERC Advanced Grant MAP project (Mapping Ancient Polytheisms. Cult Epithets as an Interface between Religious Systems and Human Agency)
The ERC Advanced Grant MAP project (Mapping Ancient Polytheisms. Cult Epithets as an Interface between Religious Systems and Human Agency; 741182; http://map-polytheisms.huma-num.fr1) works on the naming systems for the divine in the Greek and Western Semitic worlds, from 1000 BCE to 400 CE and views them as testimonies to the way in which divine powers are constructed, arranged and involved within ritual. The analysis deals both with the structural aspects of the religious systems and with their contextual appropriation by social participants. Considered to be elements of a complex language, the onomastic channels are related to the gods, therefore providing access to a mapping process of the divine, to its ways of representation and to the communication strategies between men and gods.Within this framework, the MAP Team proposes a Summer School in collaboration with the French Research Centre in Jerusalem (http://www.crfj.org) which covers the project’s themes and tools.

Guest researchers – Project ERC Mapping Ancient Polytheisms
Over the next four years, the ERC Advanced Grant MAP 741182 project has budgetary support available in order to invite researchers. These stays can be from 2 to 4 months per researcher, with the exclusion of the months of July and August (due to the fact that the university is closed for a large part of the summer). Guest researchers will work within the team, exchanging therein and participating in the improvement of the databases. Guest researchers will equally be requested to take part in MAP scientific activities (seminars, workshops, conferences…). The position of guest researcher and this call for applications is open to everybody, of French or foreign nationality, whose competences and project are deemed to be of interest to the MAP project.

Né au siècle des saints, le mouvement port-royaliste se forge dans un moment où les questions sur la sainteté sont de plus en plus prégnantes. Après le concile de Trente s’affirme une pensée de style juridique dans la théologie, qui conduit le magistère romain à alourdir sensiblement les processus de canonisation. En 1588, la création de la Sacrée Congrégation des Rites permet de donner un premier cadre normatif aux causes de canonisation. Après avoir institué le promoteur de la Foi en 1631, Urbain VIII renforce la codification de l’instruction des procès. La nouvelle législation, définitivement validée en 1642, impose le procès super non cultu vérifiant l’absence de culte local et l’obligation de respecter un délai de cinquante ans entre la date du décès du serviteur de Dieu et l’ouverture de la procédure apostolique.

L’objectif du séminaire est de poursuivre notre réflexion collective sur les noms des dieux et les stratégies de dénominations dans la fabrique du divin, en considérant des dossiers qui sont aux frontières – géographiques etchronologiques – de notre projet, en particulier : les textes ougaritiques, les mondes hittites et mésopotamiens, ainsi que l’Iran (achéménide), la Gaule, Rome et l’Arabie pré-islamique.

Expressions et instruments du politique
Les arts d’Ancien Régime étaient souvent des arts de circonstance, au discours contraint, sans que ce constat doive entraîner un quelconque jugement de valeur esthétique, en ce que ces arts prennent leur sens plein dans un contexte social dont le jeu politique n’est jamais complètement absent. De nombreux indices invitent donc à reconsidérer la littérature de la première modernité dans le cadre social et idéologique qui était le sien et à aborder les choix esthétiques non plus seulement comme l’expression de préférences personnelles mais également comme celle d’un projet lié au groupe auquel l'artiste se rattache. Nous nous proposons donc d’examiner le lien entre le politique et les arts en prêtant une attention redoublée au contexte d’énonciation ou de performance des œuvres, afin de faire apparaître la dimension politique des choix esthétiques même en l’absence de contenus explicitement politiques.

The Catholic church and its different apostolate regimes in the modern world
Fort de son expérience pluridisciplinaire et des divers laboratoires qu’il réunit, l’IEFR souhaite mobiliser à la fois l’exégète, l’historien de l’art et des religions, le théologien, le philosophe, le spécialiste des textes littéraires, ou encore le sociologue, afin de s’interroger sur les pratiques contemporaines de l’apostolat dans l’Église catholique. Quelle spécificité de l’apostolat laïc par rapport à l’apostolat hiérarchique ? De quelle manière les préoccupations apostoliques modifient-elles la relation des Congrégations religieuses au monde ? Quelle place des œuvres dans le travail apostolique ? Quelle spécificité à l’apostolat féminin, notamment à partir de la fin du XIXe siècle ? Comment l’apostolat par les arts est-il conçu ? Quel lien ou quelle distinction entre apostolat et évangélisation ? Quelle logique d’Incarnation suppose l’apostolat ? Quelle influence des mouvements charismatiques et des nouveaux mouvements d’Église sur le renouvellement de l’apostolat après le second Concile de Vatican ? Les figures nouvelles de l’apostolat mettent-elles en crise la notion de « paroisse » ? Et, de manière plus large : quelles conceptions de l’apostolat ont été défendues (apostolat de prière, apostolat direct, apostolat de témoignage, apostolat d’éclaircissement, etc.) depuis le début du XIXe siècle ?

Thinking freely in religion in English-speaking countries
This conference will explore the different ways by which thinking freely in religion has been understood and practiced in English-speaking countries since the Middle Ages. The starting point is the peculiar way by which freethought has been historically associated with hostility to religion. What is, therefore, thinking freely in religion? The conference calls for papers about the free spaces created by religious traditions and institutions in the English-speaking world and about how these spaces relate to freethought and to any way of thinking freely that is hostile to religion. The conference aims for a long-term perspective on the interactions between freethought and thinking freely, and calls for papers on any historical period from the Middle Ages to the present.

Homer's gods II - EURYOPA
Le troisième atelier consacré aux dieux d'Homère portera sur l'articulation des épithètes dites littéraires et les épiclèses relevant de contextes rituels ou cultuels. Il s'agira, dans l'esprit du projet ERC-MAP d'aborder les attributs onomastiques comme un véritable langage, susceptible de faire système et d’évoluer au gré des contextes d’énonciation. L’objectif de la réunion sera de faire ressortir la complexité et la polysémie des outils onomastiques, ainsi que la multiplicité des enjeux qui y sont liés. Ce sera aussi l’occasion d’interroger les contours des catégories sans doute trop figées de « théonymes » et d’« épithètes », mais aussi d’« épiclèses (cultuelles) » et d’« épithètes (littéraires) ». Loin d’être un simple ornement ou ingrédient technique, l’épithète participe pleinement à la fabrique du divin en pays polythéiste et à la représentation des puissances invisibles.

La journée d'études « Dire(s) au Moyen Âge » s'inscrit dans le cadre des Journées d'études sur les discours minoritaires du Lab' TTN (Textes, Théories, Numérique) organisées par l'équipe et vise à promouvoir les études sur les nouvelles marginalités scientifiques, les discours minoritaires comme phénomène à la fois sociologique, littéraire, culturel et numérique. Cette journée consacrée aux « Dires » médiévaux s'attache à envisager divers aspects du "brouhaha" au sens que donne Ruffel à ce mot de la période médiévale en réunissant des historiens, des spécialistes de la conservation et de la restauration, de la linguistique et de la littérature.

The contribution of character discourse to characterisation
9th international conference of the narrative analysis of biblical texts research network (RRENAB)
Le discours en style direct est sans aucun doute l’un des procédés narratifs qui contribue le plus à caractériser les personnages des récits bibliques. Plusieurs classiques de la narratologie biblique le soulignent, comme Robert Alter ou Shimon Bar-Efrat. Que le personnage prenne la parole pour tenir un discours plus ou moins long, et cela, dans l’interaction d’un dialogue ou dans un monologue public, le contenu de ses paroles, la façon dont il présente les faits ou la situation, le ton qu’il emploie – pour autant qu’il soit identifiable –, la rhétorique qu’il déploie, la finalité qu’il poursuit en tenant ces propos et le résultat qu’il obtient, tout cela contribue au portrait que le récit brosse de lui. Lorsqu’un autre personnage lui adresse la parole ou parle de lui, d’autres éléments de caractérisation peuvent apparaître, qui seront dé- duits à nouveau du contenu, de l’orientation, du ton, de la rhétorique et de l’impact du discours concerné.

Language contact and translation in religious context
Comparative approaches
This conference brings together anthropologists and linguists working on conversion, cultural transmission and translation theory, as well as on various case studies, whose geography comprises Oceania, Amazonia, Yucatan, Sub-Saharan Africa, Middle East, Europe, Alaska and Chukotka (Russia), and whose temporal frame spreads from the Hellenistic era to the Spanish colonization of the Americas and to the present time. The main questions of the conference are the modalities of the ethnolinguistic encounter and translation accompanying religious conversion, whether, and how, the language gets altered as a result of these processes, and what are the broader cognitive and sociocultural consequences that accompany the linguistic transformation.

Clerical and monastic communities in the Carolingian World (8th-10th)
The Carolingian era has seen by many as a time when the Church became increasingly institutionalised. One of the main aspects of this development, exemplified by the series of councils held between 816 and 819, was a (re)definition of the canonical and monastic orders and the requirement for each community in the realm to comply either with the institutiones canonicorum and sanctimonialium or with the Rule of Benedict. Despite the influential works of J. Semmler or R. Schieffer, however, the real impact of these proposed reforms is still an open question, and from this perspective, the very notion of institutionalisation can also be questioned.

The present workshop addresses questions of language contact and language change, as well as language standardization in the Christian context both in Europe and in the New World (Americas, Africa) through a study of diachronic and synchronic corpora. Special attention is paid, on the one hand, to the role of translation as a sight of language contact, and on the other hand, to register variation as an indicator of differential propagation of innovations appeared in Christian context.

The V International Conference on Mythcriticism “Myth and Audiovisual Creation” will analyze the impact of myth in audiovisual creation from 1900 to the present day. The Conference will be organized in four universities during two weeks.The Conference will be divided into 4 venues according to different themes: "Germanic Myths" in the University of Alcalá, "Classical Myths" in the University Autónoma, "Biblical Myths" in the University Francisco de Vitoria and "Modern Myths" in the University Complutense. Researchers can send to one of their 4 venues their abstracts. They will have to analyze the relevance of film, TV series and video games in the creation and modification of old, medieval and modern myths to our contemporary world.

In the context of today’s social, political and economic changes, power is one of the governing principles of culture. Power comes in many shapes and sizes and it manifests itself under various forms: it can be tyrannical or a combination of forces (Foucault); it can be charismatic, traditional and rational (Weber) or the opposite – manipulative; it can also appear as a system of diluted forces that spring from the “social field” (Bourdieu); it can remain in the unconscious or it can manifest itself in the speech act. However it may appear, it has become clear that power shapes the course of the creation, interpretation and analysis of literary texts and other cultural products.
