  Moyen Âge en fête. Commémoration et célébration à l'époque médiévale

  Pour leurs dix ans, les Jeunes Chercheurs Médiévistes de l’Université de Genève organise une journée d'études sur la notion d’anniversarium au Moyen Âge, entendue autant dans le sens de festivité, de commémoration que de datation. À cette occasion, ils lancent un appel à communication à tous et toutes les doctorant.e.s qui souhaitent intervenir sur le sujet, depuis les perspectives suivantes : le calcul du temps, les fêtes, les calendriers et autres computs, la conception de la vie et de la mort ainsi que leurs rythmes propres.

  Ces dernières décennies ont été marquées par le développement d'études sur la culture matérielle, en privilégiant une approche inter et multidisciplinaire. Ce regard a permis une lecture plus intégrée de la manière dont l’homme médiéval a interagi, a manipulé, a adapté et a transformé  son environnement matériel. De ce fait, des visions plus foisonnantes virent le jour sur les  utilisations qu’il donna aux objets qu’il produisait, les significations qu’il leur attribuait, la manière dont il les a utilisées au niveau cognitif et affectif.

  L’objectif premier des Colloquia Aquitana VI-2019 est d’approfondir l’étude de l’iconographie carolingienne et postcarolingienne à travers l’art de l’enluminure principalement, mais également des autres supports (sculpture, architecture…), suivant une approche à la fois philosophique et théologique, sans ignorer cependant les aspects archéologiques et les questions méthodologiques.

  Symbolic and Material Changes to Cult Images in the Classical and Medieval Ages

  Iconotropy is a Greek word which literally means “image turning.” William J. Hamblin (2007) defines the term as “the accidental or deliberate misinterpretation by one culture of the images or myths of another one, especially so as to bring them into accord with those of the first culture.” In fact, iconotropy is commonly the result of the way cultures have dealt with images from foreign or earlier cultures. Numerous accounts from classical antiquity and the Middle Ages detail how cult images were involved in such processes of misinterpretation, both symbolically and materially. Pagan cultures for example deliberately misrepresented ancient ritual icons and incorporated new meanings to the mythical substratum, thus modifying the myth’s original meanings and bringing about a profound change to existing religious paradigms. Iconotropy is a fundamental concept in religious history, particularly of contexts in which religious changes, often turbulent, took place. At the same time, the iconotropic process of appropriating cult images brought with it changes in the materiality of those images...The conference hopes to generate new research questions and creative synergies by initiating conversation and the exchange of ideas among scholars in the arts and humanities.
