The generative uses of architectural forms
La notion de château englobe de multiples réalités formelles bien souvent difficiles à classer ou échelonner avec précision dans le temps et l’espace. Le château incarne un système politique complexe : la féodalité. Il revêt des fonctions multiples, lieu de pouvoir, habitat familial, lieu de protection de quelques occupants ou refuge de la population etc. Castrum, castellum, fortia, quelles réalités bâties l’homme du Moyen Âge désigne-t-il derrière ces termes ? Nous nous questionnerons plus spécifiquement sur comment les usages et les fonctions se manifestent à travers les formes architecturales du château ? Les formes désignent ici l’ensemble des éléments architecturaux, qu’il s’agisse de la silhouette de l’édifice ou du détail d’un élément fonctionnel ou décoratif. Il s’agira donc de mettre en lumière des formes architecturales du château récurrentes ou non, qui caractérisent des coutumes propres au système féodal.

Ce cycle de conférences a pour but de valoriser et diffuser les travaux de jeunes chercheurs sur l’histoire, l’archéologie et l’histoire de l’art de la Bourgogne antique et médiévale. Il s’agit de présenter et mettre en avant les sources d’archives à partir desquelles travaille le jeune chercheur, ainsi que la manière dont il élabore le raisonnement scientifique lui permettant d’aboutir aux résultats de ses investigations. L’objectif est aussi de montrer l’articulation, en fonction des sujets, entre les sources conservées aux archives départementales de la Côte-d’Or et les différents dépôts municipaux, tant archives que bibliothèque. Enfin, ces interventions offriront l’opportunité au public de prendre connaissance des dynamiques actuelles de la recherche sur la Bourgogne antique et médiévale, notamment en lui permettant d’accéder, durant les séances, aux documents utilisés par les différents intervenants.

“Ògún/gú”, the emblem of innovation and technology of the “vodun” constellation
Lines of enquiry and epistemology for viable development in the 21st century
Après les éditions précédentes du festival international de Porto-Novo, le comité d’organisation se propose de se concentrer sur l’une des divinités de la constellation des vodûn en pays gun, comme thème général : Gu ou Ogu, figure guerrière de la constellation des vodûn : épistémologie d’un vodûn pionnier du développement. Cette réflexion participera au débat sur les révolutions technologiques opérées par le genre humain durant les âges, en lien avec son imaginaire socioculturel. À travers un décryptage des mécanismes de maîtrise et d’amélioration de la pyrotechnique comme critère décisif de définition et de différenciation des trois âges métallurgiques, il s’agira de rechercher la période d’apparition du dieu Gu et le rôle fondamental de l’homme noir dans la technoculture du fer. De façon plus simple, il s’agira de chercher à quel moment intervient le dieu Gu et, à travers cette recherche, de montrer le rôle de l’homme noir dans l’évolution des « techniques de fabrication du fer » et dans le « travail du fer ».

The social history of performance (Europe, 15th-18th centuries)
Le séminaire s'est donné pour but d’interroger à nouveaux frais les processus d’élaboration des spectacles (commandes, décisions et actions, travaux d’écriture et de remaniement, mises en jeu, mises en texte, diffusion, circulation, conservation) à la fin du Moyen Âge et à l’époque moderne. L’histoire des spectacles ne doit donc plus se limiter à l’étude de la composition littéraire des textes, à l’écriture de la partition ou à la composition d’un ballet. Nous nous proposons donc d’étudier les pratiques spectaculaires d’une façon interdisciplinaire en portant une attention nouvelle aux archives qui permettent de mieux saisir le phénomène par nature éphémère qu’est un spectacle.

The Illuminated Legal Manuscript: Production, Circulation and Use in Medieval Europe
International Workshop of the research team Ius Illuminatum
The workshop has the aim of giving an overview of the progress of research regarding illuminated legal manuscripts in Europe with the aim of carrying out a reflection on the methodological implications and on the practical and theoretical challenges that such research entails. During the Workshop, different case of study related to some regions of the European territory will be analyzed with a particular attention to what concerns the production, use and circulation of the different manuscripts examined. The Workshop also aims to question the potential offered by new technologies and the interdisciplinary approach in the study of the illuminated legal manuscript in order to overcome the limits and open up innovative and fruitful research paths.

Um neben den geladenen Gästen auch Nachwuchswissenschaftlern die Möglichkeit zur Teilnahme zu geben, bietet das Langzeitvorhaben bis zu drei Stipendien für Promovierende aus dem In- und Ausland an.

Women and Violence in the Late Medieval Mediterranean, ca. 1100-1500
A two-days international conference
The last decades have witnessed an increased interest in research on the relationship between women and violence in the Middle Ages, with new works both on female criminality and on women as victims of violence. The contributions of gender theory and feminist criminology have renewed the approached used in this type of research. Nevertheless, many facets of the complex relationship between women and violence in medieval times still await to be explored in depth. This conference aims to understand how far the roots of modern assumptions concerning women and violence may be found in the late medieval Mediterranean, a context of intense cultural elaboration and exchange which many scholars have indicated as the cradle of modern judicial culture. While dialogue across the Mediterranean was constant in the late Middle Ages, occasions for comparative discussion remain rare for modern-day scholars, to the detriment of a deeper understanding of the complexity of many issues. Thus, we encourage specialists of different areas across the Mediterranean (Western Europe, Byzantium, and the Islamic world) to contribute to the discussion. What were the main differences and similarities? How did these change through time? What were the causes for change? Were coexisting assumptions linking femininity and violence conflicting or collaborating?

Over the past decades, there has been a growing interest among scholars in analysing how the Islamic heritage in Europe has been perceived, described, preserved, erased, negotiated or transformed in different areas of Europe, from medieval to modern times. However, those debates seldom crossed the borders of regional approaches. The aim of this training school is to discuss those issues from different and complementary perspectives, including art history, but also philosophy, history of science or anthropology, and to question the traditional regional narrative through a comparative examination of Islamic monuments in a wider Mediterranean perspective.

Le programme « Theorica » vise, à travers la rencontre de spécialistes du Moyen Âge et de la Renaissance, à revisiter l’idée que l’époque médiévale est une époque asystématique et donc inadaptée à toute théorisation. Dans ce colloque, il est proposé, au contraire, d’étudier les modalités d’élaboration d’un discours théorique à partir des modalités intellectuelles qui façonnent le discours médiéval et de la Renaissance. Pour cette VIIe rencontre, intitulée Politia, nous proposons de réfléchir sur la vertu politique et la translatio studii dans la science politique du Moyen Âge à la Renaissance.

Exile in the Middle Ages: from Torment to Plenitude
The colloquium aims to delineate the multifaceted aspects of the concept of exile in the Middle Ages - real or metaphorical exile - through the prisms of law, history, literature, and linguistics. This colloquium will offer a preliminary paradigmatic approach to a relatively unexplored territory, at least in the sphere of medieval studies. Various lines of research are therefore possible. Proposals in the following areas (and/or in interdisciplinary perspectives) are welcome: English and French literature, comparative literature, narratology, linguistics, translation, cultural studies, history, religion, and philosophy. The proposed papers may be of a theoretical, descriptive or empirical nature (essays, syntheses, case studies, comparative studies).
