Crises and Infrastructures: Responses to Change Between Materiality and Immateriality
A Dialogue Between Anthropology, Geography and History
PhD students from the XXXIV cycle of the joint PhD Programme in Historical, Geographical, Anthropological Studies (University of Padova, Ca' Foscari Venice, Verona) are happy to invite you to their conference, titled "Crises and Infrastructures: Responses to Change Between Materiality and Immateriality. A Dialogue Between Anthropology, Geography and History". We will be exploring the interactions between various examples of Crises and Infrastructural response, trying to push for an interdisciplinary dialogue. We aim to reflect not only on the role of infrastructures as means of problem-solving, but also on the varied outcomes of critical moments. Image, Cartography, Knowledge of the City after the Council of Trent ("In_bo" vol. 12, no. 16)
Between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the Italian political geography was polarized by a number of cities of different sizes and traditions: Rome and Florence, Milan and Naples, Genoa and Venice, Turin and Modena, either ancient republics or new dynastic capitals, satellites of the great European monarchies or small Signorias. The conjunction — less frequently the conflict — between the mandates of the Council of Trent and the interests of the ruling élites of those cities set the foundation for novel forms of social, cultural and spiritual control, fostering new urban structures and policies, deeply conditioned by the presence and government of the sacred.

Les mondes normands dans les savoirs géographiques et les récits de voyages (IXe-XVIe siècle)
Cet appel à contirbution de la revue Tabularia est dédié à un dossier thématique sur la littérature géographique et aux récits de voyages relatifs aux mondes normands médiévaux. Ce dossier envisage une chronologie large, de la période carolingienne aux « Grandes découvertes (IXe-XVIe siècle) et une gamme étendue de textes : itinéraires, récits ou guides de voyages ou de pèlerinages, descriptions géographiques incluses dans des œuvres narratives (chroniques, hagiographies, sagas…), littérature encyclopédique, récits de croisades, relations d’ambassadeurs et de missionnaires, guide et correspondances des marchands, récits d’explorateurs, voire même de voyageurs imaginaires. L’objectif est de s’interroger sur la part des connaissances nouvelles et celle des emprunts, la circulation des savoirs géographiques, leur mise en œuvre dans les textes, la mise en ordre des connaissances, les intentions qui guident les auteurs ou les commanditaires, les images véhiculées par les textes, les illustrations (cartes, miniatures…) qui les accompagnent éventuellement.

Urgent issue of The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge
This special issue, Tilting, seeks to take up themes that have animated the Blackwood’s program and mandate throughout the last several years: questions of connectivity, the challenges of public and private space, community and/in isolation; imperatives to re-structure modes and methodologies of care, including revaluing care work, confronting collective care responsibilities within colonial and capitalist structures, and engaging with the infrastructures, aesthetics, contestations, and radical possibilities of mutual aid; responses to the precarization of art, labour, and life; interest in what modes of knowledge production, circulation, and re-distribution are vital to us now, and how these networks might take new form. These urgencies continue to drive Blackwood programming (and this forthcoming publication), supporting and activating artists, curators, and writers who incite us to be responsive, critical, and answerable.

Soldiers, prisoners and converts between permeable borders in the Mare Nostrum (16th-18th centuries)
The COST Action “Islamic Legacy: Narratives East, West, South, North of the Mediterranean (1350-1750)” [CA 18129] is launching a call for a conference “Soldiers, prisoners and converts between permeable borders in the Mare Nostrum (16th-18th centuries)”. The event that we are disseminating is being organised within this project, which as the purpose to provide a transnational and interdisciplinary approach capable of overcoming the segmentation that currently characterizes the study of relations between Christianity and Islam in late medieval and early modern Europe and the Mediterranean. We aim to create a network that will help to provide a comprehensive understanding of past relations between Christianity and Islam in the European context through the addressing of three main research problems: otherness, migration and borders.

Keep It Simple, Make It Fast! (KISMIF) Summer School 2020
The Keep It Simple, Make It Fast! (KISMIF) Conference 2020 will be preceded by a Summer School entitled ‘Not Just Holidays in the Sun’ on 7 July 2020 in Rivoli Municipal Theatre of Porto. The Summer School will offer an opportunity for all interested persons, including those participating in the Conference, to attend workshops directed by specialists in their fields. Our KISMIF Summer School program invites students who are interested in, or currently using, DIY cultures in their research to join us for an exciting and innovative one-day summer school program. The goal of the one-day program will be to encourage discussion and experimentation in the documentation of DIY cultures as much as it will be to encourage a new generation of DIY academics (Punk Ethnographers!) to experiment with digital cinema and performance in their research practices.

Faire la ville : penser et représenter la production urbaine
Ces journées d’études viennent en prolongement du projet de recherche ALARIC (A la recherche de l’incrémentation du changement) soutenu par le Labex Intelligence des Mondes Urbains (Université de Lyon, France). Elles proposent un retour réflexif sur la définition du changement urbain et ses méthodes d’appréhension. Elles souhaitent faire dialoguer des projets pluridisciplinaires pour lesquels l’observation dans la longue durée et la mobilisation d’une documentation variée sont les fils directeurs d’une méthode permettant de renseigner l’évolution des pratiques, les transformations de la matérialité urbaine ou des représentations territoriales. Ce faisant, les journées interrogent notre connaissance des mutations urbaines en cours et les démarches prospectives portant sur la transition vers une ville durable.

Démobiliser les classes populaires
Numéro de la revue « Espaces et sociétés »
Dans ce numéro d'Espaces et Sociétés, nous souhaitons analyser la dimension spatiale des obstacles et des stratégies visant à empêcher la mobilisation des classes populaires, que ce soit avant ou après que celle-ci prenne forme. La notion de démobilisation permet d’interroger de concert les pratiques qui contraignent ou empêchent l’émergence de l’action collective et les formes symboliques et matérielles visant à entraver et réprimer les mobilisations. On peut penser par exemple, d’un côté, aux stratégies de stigmatisation ou de délégitimation, aux pratiques paternalistes, clientélistes ou de cooptation ou, de l’autre, aux modes de répression, directs ou indirects, policiers ou judiciaires.

Monastères, couvents et confréries : vivre en communauté en Méditerranée médiévale et moderne
Séminaire transversal de recherche du LA3M, 2019-2020
Le séminaire transversal de recherche du LA3M entend réunir les membres des différents axes de recherche du laboratoire autour d’un thème commun, appréhendé de façon transversale et pluridisciplinaire. Archéologues, historiens et historiens de l’art sont invités à dialoguer et échanger sur des objets ou des problématiques qu’ils envisagent habituellement selon des approches ou des méthodes différenciées. Pendant deux années, la thématique choisie porte sur le mode de vie communautaire ou cénobitique autour de la Méditerranée aux époques médiévale et moderne, quelle que soit la religion pratiquée par ces communautés. Les intervenants traitent de différents aspects de ce « vivre en communauté », qu’il s’agisse d’aspects matériels, artistiques, intellectuels ou spirituels.
