The workshop is dedicated to questions linking transnational public participation research with transnational social movement activism research and pointing to dynamics of global spread, professionalization and standardization. It aims at discovering linkages, differences and ambiguities in both research fields and invites contributions from diverse disciplines.

El presente seminario se anuncia como la primera cita de una serie de tres seminarios que tendrán lugar en cada una de las ciudades exploradas. Ofrece un espacio de trabajo colaborativo, de reflexión y de intercambio alrededor del cual se reúnen los exploradores, los colaboradores, los miembros asociados y los otros participantes, que brindan su visión externa. Asimismo, sentará las bases para reflexionar sobre el proyecto en sí y dialogar abiertamente sobre sus perspectivas críticas. Por ejemplo, ¿qué significa el conocimiento para un artista, un investigador o un pedagogo? ¿Cómo se construye? ¿De qué discursos y representaciones son responsables los artistas, los investigadores de ciencias sociales y los pedagogos? ¿Qué enfoque de investigación adoptar de cara a la interdisciplinariedad y la intervención social? ¿De qué manera nuestras disciplinas de investigación, de creación o de intervención social revierten el motivo histórico de la expedición? O, ¿qué relación tienen las disciplinas con ese motivo?

Historicising Deliberative Democracy

The last thirty years have seen the burgeoning of political and academic speeches on the merits of participative or deliberative democracy. In parallel, in occidental democracies, various systems sharing the ambition to strengthen or increase citizen participation through collective discussion on public issues are being institutionalized. These devices are often viewed today as a novel cure to the present crisis of representative governance. This panel, at the crossroads of sociology, history and political science, aims at historicizing such deliberation necessity and at redrawing the genesis of the phenomenon as speech and political practice.

The Editors are seeking papers that explore the nexus between music and performance over place and time, showing through myriad examples how music and performance of diverse sites of the African diaspora is critical in the making of the modern Black Atlantic living tradition.

Cette septième édition des U&U International PhD séminaires aura lieu à l'ENSA Paris-Malaquais, sous la direction scientifique du laboratoire de planification de l'infrastructure, de l'architecture et du territoire (LIAT). Le séminaire s'adresse aux doctorants qui souhaitent présenter leurs recherches en cours questionnant les aspects du domaine de la planification urbaine d'un point de vue théorique ou avec un potentiel de mise en œuvre pratique. Le U&U séminaire se déroule exclusivement en anglais et vise à promouvoir l'échange d'idées, à susciter un débat parmi les chercheurs, à inviter des comparaisons et à mettre en évidence les dernières recherches en cours. Il s'agit d'une rare occasion offerte aux jeunes chercheurs de rencontrer des scientifiques de premier plan et de construire un argument critique.

The Mosaic of Urban Identities

For the conference "Cultural Encounters. The Mosaic of Urban Identities" we want to invite papers from scholars in any field of research who want to share their disciplinary insights in the matter with colleagues from other disciplines. How is multiculturalism in urban settings treated in their disciplines, what challenges and opportunities do they see? And how do they differ from or enhance the views we encounter in the media or in political or ideological debates? We expect contributions from polital sciences, sociology, psychology, urbanism, geography, economy, history, cultural and literary studies etc., but we would also welcome papers from less evident fields such as medicine, epidemiology, genetics, engineering, architecture etc.

Ambiance and Atmosphere in Translation

After "Ambience and Urban Practices", and "Ambience and Criticism", this third meeting of the Agence Nationale de la Recherche funded project "Enigmas of contemporary urban mobility”, organized within the framework of the International Ambiances Network, will develop a conversation between ambiance, atmosphere and translation. But how to translate? If translation is understood as a practice of "linguistic hospitality", as an experience of transition and mediation, what form might translation take? How might, in other words, the transition occur between the "daily" word and the word of the "expert", between that of the "living" and that of the "foreign"? How to make shareable experiences beyond the singularity expressed in different languages and cultures? What media or combination of media could help us achieve this?

The 2013 conference theme, "States in Crisis," is an opportunity to ask and answer a broad range of questions about the contemporary state, from its role in and reactions to economic and fiscal crises to the way in which its contours have or have not adapted and changed in concert with the modern economy to its place as a bulwark against or a catalyst for the construction of more market-driven societies. Within the well-established remit of SASE, participants are invited to submit theoretical and empirical contributions, at multiple levels of analysis from the local to the global, drawing from multi-disciplinary socio-economic frameworks.
