Thinking and analysing the music of Benjamin Britten in the 21st century
Parmi les anniversaires célébrés en 2013 (Verdi, Wagner, Corelli, Poulenc…), le centenaire de la naissance du compositeur anglais Benjamin Britten (1913-1976) est un appel sonné aux ressources de la recherche musicologique française et internationale. Surtout connue à travers le War Requiem et les ouvrages lyriques, que les scènes françaises programment régulièrement, la musique de Britten n’a pour l’instant fait l’objet, en France, que de quelques études approfondies. Le présent colloque prend à tâche de dresser un bilan et de poser les jalons de futures analyses – qu’elles adoptent un point de vue musicologique, esthétique, analytique, ou encore une perspective historique, sociologique, ou linguistique. Possiblement adossée à la critique anglo-saxonne ou résolument indépendante, la musicologie française de Britten reste globalement à écrire.

Comparative and multidisciplinary perspectives on the education of girls: realities and fictions
Cette journée d’études, soutenue par l’Institut du genre, proposera des réflexions et approches inter- et pluridisciplinaires, en prenant comme point de départ la notion d’éducation des filles au sens large et les représentations dominantes ou marginales qui la caractérisent. Si ce champ, tout comme celui de l’école à l’écran, ou de fictions prenant l’école pour cadre, ne sont pas des thématiques nouvelles pour la recherche en France, l’articulation de ces mêmes sujets avec les questions de genre et de sexualités n’a pas toujours été envisagée. Cette journée a donc l’ambition de combiner l’étude genrée des représentations (émergence, variation et pérennité des identités de sexe et des sexualités), et des hiérarchies culturelles et professionnelles (canon, légitimité, réception et postérité) : les créatrices sont en effet nombreuses à s’être intéressées à cette éducation dont elles ont été longtemps tenues éloignées et à laquelle elles ont néanmoins progressivement énormément contribué. La journée abordera tout d’abord la dimension historique d’un tel champ à travers un rappel de ses caractéristiques et figures majeures, avant d’en envisager les représentations culturelles.

The English influence on French musical romanticism
La situation géographique de la France, qui fait d’elle le carrefour de l’Europe, la place au cœur des jeux de transferts culturels qui se déroulent au cours des XVIIIe et XIXe siècles et la rende ainsi perméable aux influences diverses venues des pays qui l’entourent. Si celles de l’Italie et du monde germanique sur l’art lyrique ou la musique symphonique des Français sont aujourd’hui indéniables, le rôle joué par l’Angleterre dans le développement musical français reste encore à définir plus précisément. Au cours de colloque, on abordera plusieurs aspects de cette influence anglaise sur le romantisme musical français : le rapport de certains compositeurs à l’Angleterre (de Berlioz à Saint-Saëns) ; celui que le monde musical français entretient avec la littérature et le théâtre anglais ; les modèles d’organisation de la vie musicale (concerts et sociétés musicales) ; et enfin les genres musicaux et la facture instrumentale.

The purpose of this conference, organized by the Groupe de Recherches 3434 Mondes britanniques at the CNRS, is to deepen understanding of the role and operation of surveys as instruments of government in Great Britain as it unfolds over time. This event will bring specialists of Great Britain together with discussion leaders to yield a French or 'continental' view of these instruments.

L’équipe « observatoire de l’aire britannique » (C.R.E.A., Paris Ouest Nanterre la Défense) organise un séminaire consacré à l’exploration des formes de la puissance britannique et de ses réinventions. Le thème retenu pour les années 2013-2015 est « l’Empire après l’Empire ». Ce séminaire s’appuiera sur une définition large de l’Empire britannique qui inclut aussi bien l’Empire formel et ses délimitations légalement établies ainsi que l’Empire informel et le réseau des influences développé par le Royaume-Uni de la fin du dix-neuvième siècle au début de la décolonisation. Il s’agira au fil des interventions de proposer une approche des héritages de l’Empire au Royaume-Uni, des années 1970 à nos jours.

Religion, Society and Sate – A few today's issues
In a society which is largely secularized and whose cultural and religious pluralism is clearly visible, what should be the public authority’s attitude towards the religious phenomena and namely some of their public demonstrations ? What limit, in a democratic society, can we give to religious freedom ? How can we prevent and overcome the conflicts of norms and values, particularly in Family Law, Employment Law and Business Law ? Such questions have been asked on both sides of the Channel with an increasing acuity, mainly in similar terms. However, the answers provided by the legal orders of the United Kingdom and France are most often divergent. It is to a comparison of those answers, rich in information for our respective countries, that this colloquium invites us.

The languages of medieval England: beyond bilingualism
La multiplicité des langues, parlées et écrites, est un trait important de l’Angleterre médiévale. La production écrite, littéraire ou documentaire au sens large, y est souvent marquée par la coexistence de plusieurs langues. L’atelier, qui donnera lieu à publication dans la revue Médiévales, a pour but d’étudier des situations précises de coexistence linguistique, en portant l’attention sur des cas où au moins trois langues sont impliquées dans un jeu de contiguïtés, de transferts ou d’interférences.

The inaugural international conference of the French Society of Modernist Studies
The aim of this two-day conference is to foster discussion on communities in the modernist period. As discursive constructs and historical practices, communities constitute a privileged phenomenon from which to understand the political and ethical regime of modernist texts, as well as the actual forms of collective experience in which writers and readers were involved. More than a decade after Jessica Berman’s landmark work on "the politics of community" in modernist fiction, we seek to explore the various ways in which communities were configured across genres and artistic media, but also to acknowledge the grounds of their historical and cultural specificity. We hope that this will lead us to distinguish various versions of the communal, from the ideal to the empirical, from the utopian to the everyday, from consensus to dissensus.

In the wake of the London Olympics, which opened with a popular and populist ceremony depicting the Britain of yesteryear while celebrating the vibrancy of a modern multicultural society, it is timely to consider this deployment of soft power against the backdrop of contemporary Britain. More specifically, the aim of the conference is to explore and draw together common threads and themes – individual expression and freedom, an inherent consciousness of the past and a continuing national identity and iconoclasm – and to consider their influence in the context of broader political and social developments, including Britain’s faltering relationship with the EU, the response to the financial crisis and to Scottish devolution.

Reading English-language Arts and Literature with the Later Lacan
Lacanian analysis of literature and the arts has not been in vogue in France for some time now. Following the publication of Écrits in 1966, there was a period of analytic fascination with the imaginary capture of the mirror phase and its intersection with the structures of the symbolic in both literary and film studies. Since the 1980s, academic engagement with Lacanian theory in the cultural field has been in a slump, and this for several reasons: the reputed difficulty of Lacan’s style as apprehended through Ecrits, the opposition of numerous feminist critics, and the general decline of theory in the field of literary studies. Today, in light of the growing force of scientistic conceptions of the human subject (at the level of intelligence, behaviour, reproduction, the limits of the body, mortality), Lacanian theory finds renewed relevance in its unwavering postulate of the subject as singular, unique and incalculable, insusceptible to scientific conclusiveness.

Manufacturers and merchants : making and exporting clocks and other luxury goods in the 18th century
Roger Smith is an independent historian who was educated at the University of London. He was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London in 2006. He is chiefly interested in the organisation of the manufacture and sale of clocks, watches and related luxury articles in the eighteenth century, including international aspects like the migration of craftsmen. He has done much research into the Anglo-Swiss watchmaking firm of Vulliamy of London, and is currently working on a major study of James Cox and his competitors in the trade in clocks and watches from Western Europe to Asia. As well as publishing extensively on such topics, he has acted as historical adviser to museums and auction houses, including the loan exhibition SingSong, Treasures from the Forbidden City at the Museum Speelklok, Utrecht in 2010-11.

Nous examinerons comment ces éléments se situent par rapport à l'être humain, à son passé et son histoire, son existence présente et son devenir : ses dimensions humaines et posthumaines.
