  Debt, Democracy, Citizenship

  A Political History of Public Debts (Europe and the United States, since the Late Eighteenth Century)

  This is call for papers for a symposium to be held in Paris in June 2013. Its main theme is a political history of public debts since the end of the eighteenth century. Organized as a workshop, this symposium aims to explore the public debt as the locus for political debates and conflicts. Our goal is to bring together various case studies, using different approaches, but all analyzing aspects of the link between politics (especially in its social or participative dimensions) and the indebtedness of states. This should help shed new light on such central concepts for our understanding of the modern political world as sovereignty, citizenship, democracy, and solidarity.

  Libraries and Religious Legacies

  A conference on "displaced populations of books"

  De nombreuses organisations religieuses ont choisi de confier à des institutions publiques la conservation, la gestion et l’inventaire de leurs bibliothèques et de leurs collections de documents, d’objets ou œuvres d’art. Le colloque propose a pour but d’explorer les enjeux et les implications de ce changement de mains, non seulement pour ces collections mais aussi pour l’héritage culturel et religieux qu’elles représentent. Alors que leur rôle n’est plus de fondation ni d’autorité, comment ces collections deviennent-elles elles-mêmes documents d’archives ? Comment témoignent-elles de l'histoire de leurs premiers propriétaires et lecteurs ? Comment disent-elles une vie religieuse ? En formulant par ce colloque les nouveaux contextes des « populations déplacées » de livres nous élaborerons ensemble les outils méthodiques, théoriques et pratiques pour comprendre et choisir notre construction comme citoyens et héritiers.

  Contested Democracy:

  Contestation and Participation in the English-speaking World

  The dissent and uprisings that spread through the Arab world during the Spring of 2011 occurred almost a quarter of a century after the fall of East European political régimes that saw the rise of "democracy" modeled on the Anglo-American representative system. This specific context which has come to characterize the past quarter of century calls for a renewed analysis of the models these political systems represent and of the processes that triggered them and led to their long-term establishment in the UK and the US.Since the 1990s, as a response to the story of the inevitable emergence of democracy in the aftermath of the Cold War, researchers on North American politics have provided an alternative reading of events: that of a "contested democracy".

  Est-ce que la ville de Montréal est cliniquement morte comme l'affirmait récemment Jean-Paul L'Allier (Le Devoir, 13 février 2012) ? Venez le découvrir dans le cadre d'une journée d'étude consacrée aux dernières 370 années de gouvernance montréalaise. L'histoire politique et administrative des villes connaît depuis quelques années un renouveau sans précédent. Au Canada, Montréal est l'un des terrains d'enquête privilégiés par les chercheurs. À l'occasion du 370e anniversaire de la fondation de Ville-Marie, nous proposons de faire le point sur la gouvernance de l'agglomération montréalaise en mettant l'accent sur les acteurs qui détiennent ou influencent le pouvoir et sur l'exercice de ce pouvoir pour résoudre les enjeux auxquels sont confrontés les Montréalais à différentes époques de l'histoire de la ville.

  Au cœur des débats de société actuels, le phénomène migratoire forme un objet d’étude complexe, dont une approche interdisciplinaire permet de renouveler l’analyse. Le colloque qui se tiendra à Porrentruy les 9 et 10 mars 2012, organisé en lien avec le Centre suisse d'études sur le Québec et la francophonie, se déroulera quelques jours avant le début de la semaine de la francophonie et entend questionner plus particulièrement les liens tissés entre les deux régions par leur proximité linguistique.

  World War 2 : History, Art and Memory

  The session will be divided into three complementary sections with the aim of exploring in an original manner a historical moment—the Second World War—that is crucial for the understanding of the contemporary world. The first part of the course will be devoted to the study of Franco-American relations during the war, providing us the opportunity to revisit well-known political and military events from the perspective of American press coverage. The second part of the course will examine the war through the official War Artists' scheme launched in 1939. The third and final part of the course will approach the memory of the Second World War through films that have played a crucial role in shaping our memory of this event, from 1945 to the present day.
