The upcoming conference of the Portuguese Anthropological Association continues the debate about the worlds we inhabit, create and differentiate. Knowledge about its pluralities has guided the discipline for over one hundred years, in ever new and unexpected scenarios. Anthropology faces new challenges in the contemporary context of an anthropocene (or in its most radical version, capitolocene) and its uncertain responsibilities on the collective fate of humans and nonhumans. While governments and political actors favor macroscopic knowledge supported on statistics and normative analytical frameworks, we respond with what we learn in ethnography and anthropology: a knowledge closer to the lived experience and one that pays attention to the voices, bodies, desires, subjectivities, communities, identities, anxieties about the past, present and near future, unsatisfied by large-scope ideological narratives.

Tropical Medicine and Global Health in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries

Second Luso-Brazilian Meeting on the History of Tropical Medicine

The Luso-Brazilian Meetings on the History of Tropical Medicine have always sought to strike a balance between historiographical reflections, which help develop a broader comparative analysis, and case-studies examining different national, colonial, post-colonial, international and global contexts. We will continue to favor both approaches at the 1st meeting. The bulk of historiographical research has explored the period in the post-World War II. This meeting will work with a broader focus by examining the roles played by countries like Portugal, Brazil and Spain, and their connections with imperial and post-colonial research and practice.

Corporate spaces and urban scales in the XXth century

Primary agencies, administrative structures and state order

Focusing on the issue of inter-territorial coordination in corporate experiences that involved States throughout the 20th century, the Congress CORPORATE SPACES AND URBAN SCALES aims at a historical reassessment of corporate primary agencies. In general terms, the target will be the basic organisms that framed the economic activities and the "social cooperation" of the majority of the population. In the Portuguese case, for example, such basic structures comprised the following organizations: ‘houses of the people’ (Casas do Povo), ‘houses of the fishermen’ (Casas dos Pescadores), farmers guilds (Grémios da Lavoura), commercial guilds (Grémios do Comércio), industrial guilds (Grémios da Indústria) and unions (Sindicatos). The goal of this Congress is the cross analysis of this reality in the urban-rural context and in a comparative perspective.

    Museus, discurso e poder
