Approaches to Complex Predicates (ACP 2013)
CALL FOR PAPERSDeadline: 16 December 2012Complex predicates can be loosely defined as a sequence of items that behave as a single predicate, projecting a single argument structure within a clause. Each of the members of the predicate contributes part of the information ordinarily associated with a single head.Complex predicates are of various types and are found in typologically different languages. They give rise to important empirical and theoretical issues cutting across various subfields of linguistics, such as:- Syntactic and semantic modeling of complex predicate formation: compositionality, argument structure, event structure, etc.- Typological issues in complex predicate formation- Resemblances/dissemblances between syntactic and morphological processes of lexeme formation: idiomaticity, semantic groupings, lexicalization, analogical formation, exemplarity, etc.- Production and processing of complex predicates: storage vs. online processing, acquisition, etc.- Complex predicates and multiword expressionsThe purpose of the conference is to bring together those working on complex predicates in different perspectives and with a variety of approaches. -

The Network of Researchers on Policy and Programme Evaluation of the French Evaluation Society is pleased to invite you to a free research seminar on: Methods for Synthesizing Knowledge, to beheld on December 10th 2012 at Paris-Dauphine University, Amphitheater 11. The promotion of evidence-based policy by an increasing number of national governments and international organisations has triggered the issues of gathering available evidence on the impact of public interventions, assessing its credibility, and providing policy-makers with knowledge syntheses. Two state-of-art methods have emerged up to date. The first approach builds on the tools of evidence based medicine: systematic review and meta-analysis. The second approach, called realist synthesis, is rooted in social sciences methodologies. This research seminar will present and discuss the available methods (see programme below). This one day conference invites researchers working on initiatives aiming at introducing innovative urban regeneration projects in cities across Europe, particularly cities affected by radical re-modellings over the last twenty years. We are looking for instances of administrative traditions being challenged towards exploratory strategies by lobbying groups of architects/designers, or local communities, or even local governments. This conference wants to explore if and how the expertise of uses from inhabitants and field workers in urban regeneration processes may be integrated to learn about possible ways of challenging the emerging patterns of urban fragmentation. -

The U.S. Model Reconsidered, From the Post-Cold War Balkans to the Arab Revolts
Le German Marshall Fund of the United States-France et l’Université Sorbonne Nouvelle – Paris 3, sont heureux de vous convier au colloque international « Democracy Promotion and Nation Building in United States Foreign Policy. The U.S. Model Reconsidered, From the Post-Cold War Balkans to the Arab Revolts », les jeudi 18 et vendredi 19 octobre 2012, à France-Amériques (9 avenue Franklin D. Roosevelt, Paris 8e). Cette conférence sera l’occasion d’examiner les évolutions du débat sur la ‘Democracy Promotion’ de la fin de la Guerre froide jusqu’à l’administration Obama, ainsi que de comprendre la manière dont les évènements récents en Afrique du Nord et au Moyen-Orient ont refaçonné les concepts et la pratique de la ‘Democracy Promotion’. Les réponses que peuvent apporter le partenariat transatlantique à ces défis seront tout particulièrement examinées. Les intervenants présenteront et analyseront les grandes problématiques du sujet telles que l’adaptation de la culture stratégique américaine aux transformations du contexte international, la capacité du modèle de la démocratie américaine à inspirer ou à façonner les transitions vers la démocratie, s’interrogeront sur le rôle de l’armée américaine comme un vecteur de ‘Democracy Promotion’ sur certains théâtres d’opérations, ainsi que sur les nouveaux instruments de politique étrangère employés par l’administration américaine pour promouvoir la démocratie. Les panels discuteront ainsi de l’avenir de la pratique américaine de la ‘Democracy Promotion’ et privilégieront une approche comparative en consacrant un panel à la conception et la pratique européennes de la ‘Democracy Promotion’ ainsi qu’à l’émergence d’autres modèles de démocratie, dans un contexte où le modèle américain se trouve de plus en plus contesté. La conférence réunira des experts et chercheurs américains et européens reconnus. Toutes les sessions se déroulent en anglais. -

JéTou 2013, international conference for young researchers in the Language Sciences
The doctoral students in the Language Sciences laboratories at Toulouse University (France) are organizing the fourth edition of JéTou (Journées d’Etudes Toulousaines), an international conference aiming at gathering doctoral students and young researchers (who have defended their dissertation within the past three years) together, from the different disciplines of the Language Sciences, on an open and multidisciplinary theme. This 2013 edition will be devoted to a reflexion on the following theme: “Variation and Variability in the Language Sciences: analysing, measuring, contextualising”. The notions of variation and variability are central to various studies in the Language Sciences. The linguist can investigate these notions as a research object or focus on the methodological issues these same notions raise. -

How did individuals' geographical mobility contributed the circutation of knowledge in East Asia (16th-20th centuries)? In China, Korea and Vietnam, the bureaucratic systems dictated a specific mode of mobility of the elites. But the ways in which individual itineraries shaped the circulation of knowledge need to be studied not only for civil servants, but also for various socio-professional groups, such as the scholars privately employed by high officials, craftsmen, medical doctors, traders, Buddhist monks, and emperors themselves. To these groups should be added the actors of the globalisation of knowledge during this period. -
French History is seeking contributions, in French and English, for a special issue on "Animals in French History," edited by Christopher Pearson (Liverpool) and Peter Sahlins (UC Berkeley). Proposals for articles should bring together theory and original empirical research that draws on new ways of studying animals and animal-human relations in France since the Renaissance.

20th International Conference of Europeanists
In order to propose a session (for the 20th International Conference of Europeanists on the theme "Crisis and Contingency: States of (In)stability", that will take place in Amsterdam, on June 25-27 2013, it is called for papers that deal with the problematics of the EU immigration and asylum policy.We can wonder whether the measures that are adopted on immigration and asylum issues comply with international and European legal instruments of human rights protection, as interpreted by the ECJ and the European Court of Human Rights. The context is appropriate for such an analysisThe Lisbon Treaty consolidates the scope of such juridical instruments, and reinforces the control the ECJ develops on the EU norms pertaining to the Area of freedom, security, and justice, particularly the norms dealing with immigration and asylum matters. -

The first goal of our symposium is to enlighten the role of the animateur d’art in the development of the arts. We hope that this scientific gathering would help us specify this first formula of the cultural actor: “The animateur d’art is an amateur who actively participates in the defense of the arts and in the stimulation of the artistic creation in a certain period. He puts his numerous networks to work in order to spread ideologies and aesthetics through the cultural environment and the society. He is a key figure positioning himself as a mediator between the different art worlds – the plastic arts as well as between the different agents of the cultural environment. His work consists in building bridges between the artists and his own cultural environment in order to ease the reception of the works and to promote a peculiar aesthetics”. -

It is the continuation of the Chroniques Yéménites, which was the first peer-reviewed academic journal on Yemen, the Arabian Peninsula and the Horn of Africa published by the CEFAS between 1993 and 2011. Its editorial board is calling for papers for the Free article Section of the 2nd issue of the journal, devoted to Towns and urbanization in the contemporary Arabian Peninsula and scheduled for Autumn 2013. -

Conçu comme un outil de formation à la recherche, à l’initiative du monde académique, au bénéfice des professionnels impliqués dans la diffusion et l’enseignement des langues, fondé sur l’échange scientifique entre jeunes chercheurs, universitaires et experts confirmés, en présentiel, par un dispositif de visio-conférence ou par une plate-forme d’échange, le Séminaire propose d’engager la réflexion scientifique internationalisée par un programme incitatif comportant des conférences plénières de chercheurs de premier plan issus de champs disciplinaires complémentaires et des ateliers consacrés à la présentation par les jeunes chercheurs de leurs travaux. Les langues de travail sont le français et l’anglais.

Urban Nature through Projects. Towards a new coalition between city and nature
Intitulé « Nature urbaine en projets », le présent colloque a pour ambition de mieux comprendre et connaître ce qu’il en est du devenir de la ville –sa nature- dès lors qu’elle s’attache à la nature. Car s'il faut bien envisager l’avenir des formes urbaines naturelles –promenades plantées, parcs, jardins- héritées de l’histoire, c’est à l’aune d’une demande sociale de nature, elle-même fluctuante, que cela doit être fait. Et s’il faut dès lors appréhender le devenir des modèles de nature auxquels se réfèrent les architectes, les paysagistes et les urbanistes qui aménagent nos villes en espaces naturels, il convient tout autant d’interroger les mutations du « projet » en tant qu’outil de conception auquel ces professionnels ont recours. Il n’est pas jusque la question de l’ « innovation » architecturale, paysagère et urbanistique qui n’implique la notion de dépassement du présent inhérente aux projets de nature urbaine. Une nouvelle alliance entre nature et ville se dessinerait-elle ? -

La guerre d’indépendance algérienne, en tant qu’événement fondateur majeur de l’après-seconde guerre mondiale, peut constituer, en termes de « générations », un espace-temps bien défini et homogène. Dès lors, il est légitime de mieux comprendre et d’interroger la nouveauté des paradigmes d’une génération de chercheurs inscrits dans un champ de recherche en construction. Peut-on déceler des ruptures ou des continuités dans les objets, les sujets, les méthodes, les approches macro et micro-historiques ? Quelle place les sources ont-elles dans ces travaux ? Existe-t-il des changements entre les travaux qui se veulent plus larges et exhaustifs et ceux qui se fondent sur des aspects plus localisés ? Quels sont les déplacements de paradigmes explicatifs que l’on peut observer ? Cette nouvelle génération évite-t-elle encore les présupposés idéologiques liés à une mémoire militante ? Au-delà des résultats et conclusions des travaux, le colloque devra aussi mettre en exergue les méthodes, les matériaux, les perspectives d’enquêtes engagés. Une attention particulière sera accordée aux propositions des doctorants et jeunes chercheurs.
