  1914-1918. The war in maps

  The 1rst World War dramatically affected societies and territories, as well as personal lives and all forms of culture, in Europe and elsewhere in the world. The 1914-1918 conflict had in all respects a foundational nature. On the occasion of the 1rst World War commemorations, and in connection with the exhibition, "Summer of '14: The Last Days of the Old World", which will be held at the French National Library from March 25 to August 3, the French Committee of Cartography organizes a conference specifically dedicated to the role of cartography in the war, according to three main issues : the role of maps during the preparation of the war, the use of maps on the theatre of military operations, the importance of the map in a civil society during the war.

  Géographie, enseignement et tendances libertaires

  L’école et l’enseignement de la géographie doivent beaucoup aux expériences historiques de la pédagogie libertaire (universités populaires et ouvrières, écoles nouvelles, Écoles Ferrer, etc.). La Suisse occupe une position importante en Europe et dans le monde de ce point de vue, pour avoir hébergé les réseaux d’exilés qui, tout en s’insérant dans la tradition pestalozzienne, ont inauguré cette démarche. Parmi eux, des géographes comme Élisée Reclus (1830-1905), Pierre Kropotkine (1842-1921) ou encore Charles Perron (1837-1909) ont été les pionniers de la nouvelle approche qui envisageait une pédagogie géographique passant par l’expérience directe du monde et se passant tant que possible de manuels et de cartes. Ces discours révèlent aujourd’hui leur étonnante modernité du point de vue des approches pédagogiques et didactiques, des dispositifs soulevant le rôle de l’école publique lorsqu’elle est remise en question et de la géographie de l’expérience du monde confrontée à l’enseignement. Le problème de la multi-culturalité à l’école était déjà posé à cette époque par l’entremise de principes cosmopolites véhiculés par le mouvement libertaire.
