  Colorful rainbows. Comparative perspectives

  Après la parution du volume collectif L’Antiquité en couleurs : catégories, pratiques, représentations, issu de réflexions communes entamées depuis 2003, les membres de l’atelier Chromo ont souhaité reprendre l’étude des couleurs afin d’approfondir l’expérience comparatiste. Une piste d’analyse suggérée par plusieurs des contributions a ainsi retenu notre attention : les jeux d’opposition entre coloré et incolore, polychrome et monochrome, avec toute la gamme des gradations intermédiaires qui les accompagnent : peu coloré/très coloré, terne/chatoyant, mat/lumineux, foncé/clair. Cette piste invite à appréhender la question des couleurs de manière dynamique, à travers les processus de différenciation des couleurs, de diffraction, mais aussi d’altération, de réduction et de disparition de la couleur.

  War and Peace in French history

  Sixtieth Annual Meeting of the Society for French Historical Studies (SFHS)

  The SFHS conference’s theme will be “War and Peace in French history”, with special reference to the centenary of the outbreak of World War I. Scheduled guest-speakers will be twentieth century specialists Professors John Horne (Trinity College, Dublin) and Martha Hanna (University of Colorado, Boulder), both noted scholars of France and the Great War; and Philippe Contamine, Emeritus Professor of medieval history and Membre de l’Institut, who will lecture on the theme of the Hundred Years War in comparison with World War I.

  La question de l’impureté dans les sociétés atlantiques (XIVe-XXe siècle)

  Université d'été – Projet STARACO

  Le projet STARACO (STAtuts, « RAce » et COuleurs dans le monde atlantique de l'Antiquité à nos jours), financé par la Région Pays de la Loire, propose un soutien à la participation de doctorants et post-doctorants (Europe, Afrique, Amériques) à l'université d'été qui se déroulera à Nantes du 24 au 28 juin 2013 sur « La question de l'impureté dans les sociétés atlantiques, XIVe-XXe siècles ». Trois thématiques principales structurent ces journées : conceptions et justifications de l'impureté, pratiques sociales et politiques face à l'impureté ; la rémanence de l'impureté des populations non-européennes.

  Application du LiDAR en archéologie

  Application of LiDAR surveys in archaeology

  La technique du LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) permet de faire des levés altimétriques géoréférencés de grande précision à partir d’un scanner laser embarqué dans un avion. Une restitution très fine de la topographie est alors possible même sous couvert forestier. Cette technologie donne accès aujourd’hui à des kilomètres carrés de zones forestières jusqu’alors muettes vues du ciel et montre également son efficacité sur l’évolution du littoral. Elle revêt un véritable intérêt pour la restitution des structures du paysage et pour le suivi de la conservation patrimoniale des vestiges. La journée du 6 mars 2013 sera consacrée à des exemples d'application réalisés en Amérique Centrale, en Asie et en Europe. Elle sera suivie le 7 mars 2013 par une journée de formation sur les logiciels de traitement des données.

  New Approaches to the History of Commercial Justice

  Merchant courts and merchants’ strategies before the courts have been studied extensively up to date by both historians of law and economic and social historians. However, given the specialisation of historians, the studies tend to have either a legal and administrative, or an economic and social focus. The workshop will gather historians and legal historians to discuss recent research and new methodological approaches to the study of commercial justice from the Middle Ages to the Nineteenth Century. The aim is to establish an overview of the current research and to discuss the possibilities of combining both organizational and actor-centred perspectives in the study of commercial litigations.

  10th Middle Ages study day

  The Brazilian Association of Medieval Studies (ABREM) will hold its Xth International Meeting of Medieval Studies: Ibero-american dialogues, from July 1st through 5th,  at the Universidade de Brasília (UnB), 2013. One of the main goals is to improve the networking between medievalists dedicated to the study of the Iberian Middle Ages. This meeting serves as a hub for latin-american specialists and also improves the connection that several institutes and labs maintain with Portuguese and Spanish researchers. One of its other goals would be to set up interinstitutional and international web researches. Finally, this meeting’s main focus is the Ibero-American medievalism itself.
