The Face of the Dead and the Early Christian World

The theme chosen for this meeting is the study of funerary images in the transition between late antiquity and the Middle Ages. The central question will a reflection on the function of the funerary images in a broad sense, but also their impact on the early christian world. The choice of the chronological time also shows the second intention of the colloquium: this is an attempt to explain why the ancient funerary tradition of the image will eventually disappear, replaced by other figures of the representative functions. Through various media - from the mosaic and painting, through sculpture and ending with gilded glasses - there will be presented one of the nodal representation of the self: the human face on the border between life and death.

James Zebedee, the "translatio" and the Jacobean pilgrimages

7th International Colloquium Compostela

The 7th International Colloquium Compostela aims at analysing the myth of the "translatio" of the body of Saint James from Palestina to Santiago de Compostela and its impact in the historical construction of the Jacobean pilgrimages. As in the former editions, focusing on an interdisciplinary approach, the Colloquium analyzes the state of the art in the archeological research of Palestinian and Compostela in the early centuries, the studies about the traditions of the translatio, the iconography and the literary and social impact of the "translatio" and the current reality of pilgrimages to Compostella.

Making one's salvation, working for salvation. Monks, canons and friars in the Iberian Peninsula

Between conversion, mediation and cure of souls (VIth-XVth centuries)

La question du salut est au cœur du christianisme. Elle explique le succès rencontré par la vie régulière au Moyen Âge et détermine les différentes formes qu’elle revêt : moines, chanoines réguliers, frères mendiants. Ce séminaire, organisé par la Casa de Velázquez, a pour objet d’étudier le rapport de ces communautés religieuses au salut au cours du Moyen Âge en Péninsule ibérique. On souhaite s’interroger sur les caractéristiques qui le rattachent aux systèmes de salut dans le reste de l’Occident et dégager ses éventuelles spécificités. On partira des trois relations fondamentales au salut : celle de la conversion individuelle, c’est-à-dire de l’entrée en religion mais aussi de la conversion des mœurs, celle de la fonction médiatrice des religieux, fondée sur la prière et sur la liturgie, celle enfin du soin des âmes, lié à un engagement pastoral.

Conviction, Belief, Faith : Pistis and Fides from Plato to the Fathers

Ce colloque sur les origines et l’histoire du concept de « foi » dans la longue durée a pour but d’explorer les évolutions croisées de la pístis grecque et de la fides latine et d’élucider une notion essentielle à la compréhension des religions, notamment monothéistes, du bassin méditerranéen et de l’Europe. Il associe philosophes et spécialistes d’histoire des religions. Une deuxième rencontre (31 mai-2 juin 2013) sera consacrée aux développements de ces notions dans l’Antiquité tardive latine et au Moyen Âge.
