Referendums and the European democratic ideal

There has most definitely been a renewed interest in referendums in Europe. Over time, some countries such as Switzerland have fully integrated this form of popular ballot into their political practises while others, having scarcely used them in the past, are turning to them more and more. Given that the absolute purity of referendums contrasts sharply with the imperfections of representative democracy, they are often considered to be the impassable horizon of the democratic ideal. In this sense, they can be considered to be the essential expression of democratic will. Yet referendums are more frequently referred to in political discourse than they are actually put into use.

"Changing the Tune": Popular Music & Politics in the XXIst Century

From the Fall of Communism to the Arab Spring

Popular Music scholars have devoted considerable attention to the relationship between music and power. The symbolic practices through which subcultures state and reinforce identities have been widely documented (mainly in the field of Cultural, Gender and Postcolonial Studies), as has the increasingly political and revolutionary dimensions of popular music. Most studies have focused on the genres and movements that developed with and in the aftermath of the 1960’s counterculture. Yet little has been written about how the politics of popular music has reflected the social, geopolitical and technological changes of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, after the fall of Communism. Still, the music of the Arab Spring or of the Occupy and Indignados movements have been scarcely commented upon while they attest to significant changes in the way music is used by activists and revolutionaries today.

En suivant trois axes principaux – littérature, philosophie politique, réception de Rousseau au Japon et en Chine –, le colloque Rousseau de Tokyo se propose, avec la participation desspécialistes de cet écrivain, venus de France et de Suisse, de mettre en oeuvre un espace commun de débat. Il veut, sous le titre « Rousseau, le moderne ? Retour de Rousseau, retour à Rousseau », examiner de divers points de vue la validité des messages de Rousseau pour l’avenir de la société, de la culture et de l’humanité.
