The appointment is for a three- to six-month research stay in Braunschweig and offers distinguished scholars from the humanities, political and social sciences, education sciences or law the opportunity to conduct research projects or to finish major publications without teaching or administrative obligations. Individuals with extensive high-level international experience in government or non-governmental organizations or in international organizations may also apply.

Georg Eckert Institute for International Textbook Research Fellowship Programme 2014

The Georg Eckert Institute for International Textbook Research will award several short-term fellowships for visiting researchers in 2014. The GEI’s fellowship programme supports research on textbooks and other educational media. Fellowships aim to provide both young and established academics and textbook authors with the opportunity to use the extensive international textbook collection in its specialist library, conducting comparative studies, exchanging ideas and discussing their findings with the academic staff of the Institute.

Narrative Matters 2014, the 7^th Narrative Matters conference, will be held from 23^rd June to 27^th June 2014 at the University of Paris Diderot and the American University of Paris. The conference will address the theme of Narrative Knowing / Récit et savoir. This conference will bring together scholars of all disciplines — psychology, psychoanalysis, sociology, anthropology, history, philosophy, linguistics, literary studies, feminist and gender studies, education, medicine/healthcare, social work, biology, law, theology, computer science, visual studies, etc. — to reflect on the issue of the, sometimes, contested epistemic powers of narrative.

Love, Lust and Longing: Rethinking Intimacy

Research Program on Recasting Bonds, 4th International Symposium

While discussion of sex become ever more common, opportunities to explore the nature of love are still rare. When the topic is raised, most often the focus is on dramatic experiences or hard cases. The “epic” and the “mundane” are probably more intertwined in our experiences of love than cultural speech and literature admit. Yet, an imbalance continues to exist: we reflect little on the smallness of events that sustain love bonds. What goes unexamined as such are the ways in which love is spoken of and enacted in everyday life. This trans-disciplinary research project is interested in exploring the lived experience of love considering the ways in which it is described and how it is practiced, identifying how love differs from and overlaps with concern, care, friendship and lust and raising questions about the ontology, expression and politics of love.

Higher Education and Mobilities 2013

In a context of major change in both higher education and the academic world, transformations can be considered as multi-dimensional and include issues such as : high enrolment rates, increased social and cultural heterogeneity, development of and change in mobility (institutional, territorial, international), diversification of the offer of academic institutions (public and private, reconfiguration of the institutional landscape), changes in policy guidelines, such as the Bologna Process. The conference will focus on individual and group behaviours, strategies and trajectories which are strongly affected by and find themselves remodelled in the current context. We propose the term mobility as a central notion for apprehending the phenomena.

Women in Educated Elites of Pre-Socialist and Early Socialist East Central European Societies

The opening up to modernity of East Central Europe since the late 19th century was marked – among other things – by a triple process generating structural transformations of established post-feudal societies and affecting often radically the status of women. Due to post-feudal conditions of competition for social standing, positions of influence and prestige, hitherto unknown forms of inequalities appeared in the very process of accumulation of political, economic, professional, cultural an educational assets henceforth necessary for the access to the elites. Female professionals, though they could rarely achieve advanced careers in the ruling elites in the old regime, so much so that they often encountered even various forms of public rejection and discrimination on intellectual markets, significantly participated in the framing of the way of life of the new middle class. This workshop will adopt a gender-focused perspective cocentrating on the place of women (training, education, professions) and bringing to light the differences and inequalities existing between male and female members of educated elites.

On the 6 and 7 June 2013, for the fifth consecutive year, Sapienza Università di Roma will be organising the International Conference “Dialogues between Theatre and Neuroscience”. The theme chosen for this year’s conference is the following: In what ways does interdisciplinary encounter change the disciplines involved? In what ways can the practices and studies of theatre change the research praxis of neuroscience? In what ways can the theories and paradigms of neuroscience modify the research praxis of theatre, in both its performative and academic cultures?

Graduate and Postgraduate Programs in Education in Arab Universities: Quality and Added Value

This conference is organized by the Arab Educational Information Network Shamaa and the Lebanese Association for Educational Studies and will be held in November 2013 in Beirut, Lebanon. The conference's objective is to provide a platform for educational researchers to present their perspectives on the current state of research studies in graduate programs in education and to raise questions regarding the quality of these studies. Papers presented will be subject to peer review process to be eligible for publication in the refereed conference proceedings. We hope that this conference will help capture the current practices in MA and PHD programs in education in the Arab countries, and will allow for a rich professional dialogue among its participants toward developing ideas and recommendations for improving these programs as well as the quality of their graduates and the studies they produce.

Current Trends, Challenges and Crises

Fala-se cotidianamente de crise do ensino jurídico, a reboque da permanente crise das próprias instituições do Sistema de Justiça. Essa crise da educação também não é de hoje: Em “A Educação Jurídica e a crise brasileira”, texto extraído da aula inaugural dos cursos da Faculdade Nacional de Direito proferida em 1955, San Tiago Dantas expôs a decadência de um modelo alimentado pelas classes dirigentes, desconectado das necessidades básicas da sociedade. Dizia San Tiago Dantas: “Quem percorre os programas de ensino das nossas escolas, e sobretudo quem ouve as aulas que nelas se proferem, sob a forma elegante e indiferente da aula-douta coimbrã, vê que o objetivo atual do ensino jurídico é proporcionar aos estudantes o conhecimento descritivo e sistemático de instituições e normas jurídicas. Poderíamos dizer que o curso jurídico é, sem exagero, um curso de institutos jurídicos, apresentados sob a forma expositiva de tratado teórico-prático”. Na mesma senda, Rui Barbosa, no início do século passado, denunciava o tradicional método de ensino jurídico como fator proibitivo do próprio processo de aprendizado.
