  The environment in the East

  Identities and territories

  Au cours du XX^e siècle, les pays et les empires autoritaires, à l’économie planifiée et se revendiquant de l’idéologie communiste ont-ils développé un rapport particulier aux ressources naturelles, aux aléas et aux catastrophes, à l’environnement en général ? Comment les États et les sociétés qui en sont les héritiers font-ils face aujourd’hui à une crise environnementale devenue multiforme et globale : conséquences des catastrophes (Kychtym, Tchernobyl, Aral...) ; inégalités environnementales ; pollutions industrielles ; risques naturels et technologiques ; changement climatique, etc. ? À l’approche historique développée ces dernières années, s’ajoutera la volonté d’aborder ces territoires dans une double perspective, celle d’espaces socialement construits par des acteurs et des stratégies et celle d’espaces structurants pour l’action publique.

  Management of architectural and urban settings in an age of sustainable development: practices, changes and challenges

  Ramau conferences – 2014

  Following the study days dedicated to “architectural and town planning professions faced with the involvement of residents and users” in 2012 and “sustainable town planning and architecture know-how and models” in 2013, the aim of the Ramau 2014 conferences is to concentrate on the relations between sustainability and “management” in the field of urban development and architecture. The incorporation of sustainable development in architectural, urban and landscaping operations seems to have the effect of increasing the concern for management logic in the project process.

  Contemporary art and geographical practices: territories in representation

  Workshop 1. Shift / confront the gaze

  Cet atelier de recherche est organisé dans le cadre du Musée éclaté de la presqu’île de Caen (Mépic) en collaboration avec l’UFR de géographie de l’Université de Caen Basse-Normandie. Il est structuré en trois séances de travail organisées en juin, septembre et octobre 2013.

  L’une des particularités du MéPIC est de faire dialoguer, au sein d’un projet culturel, différents acteurs d’un même territoire : institutions culturelles (musées, centres d’art, etc.), artistes, communes, élus, entreprises, chercheurs… Tous participent à des degrés divers à l’élaboration de l’exposition et portent un regard spécifique sur l’espace qui va de Caen à la mer. Le Musée éclaté de la presqu’île de Caen s’invite alors dans l’espace public, tant par cette mobilisation des acteurs locaux que par la dissémination des œuvres sur les quinze communes qui bordent l’estuaire de l’Orne. Nous souhaitons de la sorte, au cours de cet atelier, interroger les différentes représentations attachées à que nous nommons « Presqu’île de Caen » et qui accueille aujourd’hui le regard à la fois singulier et pluriel de la création artistique contemporaine.

  Climate and Weather: Science as Public Culture

  Scientific Communication and its History – III

  This conference is the third in a series devoted to historical and contemporary perspectives on the communication of science and technology. Climate and weather provide a particularly rich and challenging case study to complete the conference series. As with other disciplines studied during the previous conferences, the climate sciences are characterised by complexity: in their professional networks; their conceptual models; and the logistics of their large-scale data and computing needs. Yet few modern scientific disciplines attract the same level of public engagement, in both everyday life and passionate debate on the future of the planet. Moreover, their status at the intersection of policy, scientific controversy and the public sphere is not a recent development: the same issues and fault lines ran through meteorology from the 18th-century onwards. Shifting interests within the history of science and the development of environmental history have greatly expanded the field in recent years. The conference will provide an opportunity to reflect on these historiographical developments via a specific focus on the communication of weather and climate from the 18th to the 21st centuries. The conference will address three themes in particular: Commodification of meteorological knowledge, Media, and Historicizing climate history.

  War and environment in the 20th century

  Ce séminaire se propose d’étudier les rapports qu’entretiennent guerre et environnement au XXe siècle. Jusqu’ici cette question a peu retenu l’attention des historiens. Pourtant ces rapports, considérés au sens large, ont constitué au cours de cette période un opérateur majeur de reconfiguration de la biosphère et des liens nature / société. Ils ont dans le même temps contribué à façonner le champ et les modalités de l’agir militaire.
