2014 Charles C. Eldredge Book Prize in American Art

Call for Nominations

The Smithsonian American Art Museum invites nominations for the 2014 Charles C. Eldredge Prize, an annual award for outstanding scholarship in American art history. Single-author books devoted to any aspect of the visual arts of the United States and published in the three previous calendar years are eligible. To nominate a book, send a letter explaining the work’s significance to the field of American art history and discussing the quality of the author’s scholarship and methodology. Self-nominations and nominations by publishers are not permitted. The deadline for nominations is December 1, 2013. Please send them to: The Charles C. La fondation Marc de Montalembert et l’institut national d’histoire de l’art se sont associés pour l’attribution du Prix Marc de Montalembert d’un montant de 8 000 euros. Ce prix soutient l’achèvement d’un travail de recherche qui contribue à une meilleure connaissance des arts et de la culture du monde méditerranéen. La fondation Marc de Montalembert offre en outre au lauréat la possibilité de séjourner à son siège à Rhodes, en Grèce.

Créée en 2006, Perspective. La revue de l’INHA, publication semestrielle, a pour vocation de participer à la réflexion actuelle sur l’histoire de l’art en présentant des textes critiques sur les méthodes, les orientations et les enjeux de la discipline, toutes spécialités et époques confondues. Recrutement de post-doctorants et doctorants dans le cadre du projet LexArt

Le projet européen « LexArt - Words for Art : The Rise of a Terminology (1600-1750)», financé par l’ERC (European Research Council-Advanced Grant 2012) porte sur l’étude systématique du vocabulaire artistique tel qu'il s'élabore et se diffuse au Nord des Alpes au XVIIe siècle à partir des textes fondateurs italiens, puis se transforme en relation avec les pratiques artistiques en France, en Grande-Bretagne, aux Pays-Bas et dans les pays germaniques. Le projet compte des partenaires dans six pays européens. L’équipe de recherche, post-doctorants et doctorants travailleront dans différents pays en fonction des aires géographiques étudiées.

La Cinémathèque française souhaite développer ses liens avec le monde de la recherche en histoire du cinéma. Le programme de son appel à chercheurs annuel a pour but d’offrir un accueil privilégié, assorti de divers avantages, à des chercheurs intéressés par des travaux sur ses collections, en vue de thèses ou de mastères (master 2). Le partenariat entre le chercheur et la Cinémathèque française donne lieu à un contrat de recherche stipulant les droits et obligations du chercheur. Parmi les chercheurs dont les projets seront retenus, trois pourront bénéficier d’une bourse.

Visiting Professorships at the Courtauld Institute of Art, London, 2013-2015 The deadline for all professorship applications is January 15, 2013. Two professorships are available at the Courtauld Institute to present the best recent scholarship on historical American art. A twelve-week professorship requires administering one full-term course integrated with the institute’s curriculum and participating in other scholarly activities. A one-week intensive professorship entails a public scholarly event, a seminar, and a special visit to a London gallery, archive, collection, or library relevant to American art history. Postdoctoral Teaching Fellowship at the Courtauld Institute of Art, London, 2013-2015 The deadline for all fellowship applications is January 15, 2013. This two-year postdoctoral fellowship supports advanced inquiry in the history of American art, conservation, and museum studies and is integrated with the postdoctoral fellowship program of the Courtauld Institute of Art Research Forum. The selected fellow teaches three historical American art courses, participates in scholarly activities organized by the institute, and organizes an international scholarly event. This two-year postdoctoral fellowship focuses on the history of American art and visual culture. The selected fellow teaches four semester-long courses to undergraduate and master’s-level students at a French university, participates in local seminars at the Institut National d’Histoire de l’Art and at the hosting university, and organizes academic programs on related research topics.

These grants provide support for publication projects on historical American art (pre-1980) that make a significant contribution to scholarship and have an international dimension. Projects may include translations of texts on American art; publications written by non-U.S. scholars or those with a significant number of non-U.S. contributors; and publications with a focused thesis exploring American art in an international context. Projects must be under contract for publication.

Terra Foundation Research Travel Grants to the United States (2013)

For doctoral students and postdoctoral scholars

Six to nine grants are awarded annually to doctoral students and postdoctoral scholars outside the United States to travel to the United States for research on pre-1980 American art and visual culture. Doctoral students receive up to $6,000; postdoctoral scholars (those who received their degree within ten years of the application deadline) receive up to $9,000. Destinations and duration of travel are determined by fellows.
