Civilians at stake: mass violence in Asia and Europe from 1931 to the present

On the occasion of the seventieth anniversary of the end of World War II, the Online Encyclopedia of Mass Violence has organized an international and interdisciplinary meeting. By bringing together key innovative specialists in philosophy, political science, law and history, the conference intends to reflect on the definition and role of civilians during mass violence. Civilians are understood here as victims of bombing or as actors resisting to ground-based mass violence. The meeting focuses on World War II as a touchstone period but also tries to assess its role in the longue durée up to the present. It takes the term “world war” literally, with special emphasis on the Asian continent, aiming at the opening of new horizons leading to more globally oriented research.

The War within: finance and morality in early-modern Europe (1630-1815)

While many historical studies have shown that the funding of international warfare had a profound impact on institutional and economic developments, less work has been done on the ways in which European polities responded to the "War within" that pitted those who benefited from war expenditure against those who paid for the military effort. A series of case studies on Spain, Venice, the Dutch provinces, the Austrian Low Countries, Prussia, France, Britain and Sweden will analyse some of the conflicts that arose when the needs and methods of financing war met social demands for morality and accountability. These are fundamental questions that still resonate and have relevance today as governments and societies try to move on from the Global Financial Crisis.

Droits fondamentaux, éthique relationnelle et contraintes financières

The Conference "Basic rights, relational ethics and financial constraints" will explore, from a philosophical perspective, the various ways in which basic rights, interpersonal, professional and institutional relations, and financial constraints interact. Given the gap between the generality of basic ethical principles and the norms of practice in various areas of social life, there is usually no direct or obvious way from principles to detailed and effective regulation.

Second International Conference on Uyghur Studies

2e colloque international sur les études Ouïghoures

The Uyghurs are one of the ten most populous stateless nations in the world. While they have a long history of cultural accomplishments and political influences, they have remained marginal in international scholarship given their ambiguous position both in regional studies and in geopolitics. This conference is the second attempt to bring together a broad spectrum of the international community of scholars whose research is focused on the Uyghur people’s history, culture, society.

South and east mediterranean youth policies on a tightrope

The conference brings together a series of international researchers who examine youth policies within institutional structures and at the state level in six South and East Mediterranean countries (Tunisia, Morocco, Palestine, Egypt, Lebanon and Turkey). It sheds light on the politics of youth policies, sociological and economic obstacles to becoming "adults", and questions the historical turn after the 2011 "Arab Spring". Youth policies are examined at a macro-level in the areas of employment, family, migration and spatial planning in an attempt to understand the emergence of youth as a category, oftentimes identified with a public problem. The question of how various forms of marginalization and domination such as gender, social, urban/rural, ethnic, based on citizenship, etc. intersect and generate inequalities among youth in South and East Mediterranean countries is central to inquiry.

Towards Dystopian Democracies in Europe and the USA?

From Prejudice in Immigration Policies to Mass Surveillance in Counterterrorism Operations

Developments of democracy in Europe and the USA have followed mutually influencing paths over the past two centuries. From the declarations of rights to the establishment of democratic institutions after WWII, these regions have built their governments on the foundation of human rights protection. These foundations have now been weakened by the responses to a number of challenges, in particular immigration and counter-terrorism.

Total Mobilization: Web and Social Reality

What is the web doing? What is the web? What does the web want?

The web is mobilizing human beings in impressive and unprecedented ways. In order to understand this phenomenon, we should wonder what kind of entity the web is, how it relates to and bears upon human society and culture. The conference aims at doing so by involving scholars who, in their researches, are addressing these issues from different perspectives. e.g. philosophy, cognitive sciences, anthropology, social sciences.

Unlocking Sound and Image Heritage. See, Listen and Share

    SOIMA 2015 International Conference

The conference is based on the collective experience of ICCROM’s multi-partner programme on Sound and Image Collections Conservation (SOIMA), which organized five capacity building initiatives (four international and one regional) in Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America during 2007-2014. Building on SOIMA’s global insights from bringing together 89 sound and image professionals from 55 countries to date, the 2015 conference is making a strong case for looking beyond professional and institutional boundaries, actively listening to each other and sharing strategies to ensure a safe and creative tomorrow for sound and image heritage. The conference aims to promote the sound and image heritage held by diverse and lesser-known cultural and research institutions, as well as individual collectors.

    Rethinking Right-Wing Women

Gender, Women and the Conservative Party, 1880s to the Present

This two-day international conference explores the relationship between women and conservatism since the late 19th century. In the media frenzy and the re-enactment of the visceral political divisions of the 1980s that greeted the death of Margaret Thatcher in April, 2013, it soon became clear that Britain’s first woman Prime Minister was being portrayed as an aberrant figure who had emerged from a party of men.  It appeared that the media and the public had not been well enough served by academics in making sense of and contextualizing the Thatcher phenomenon and, more broadly, the paradoxical sexual politics of the Right.

Towards a graphic culture: studying drawing

Drawing seems nowadays to know unprecedented expansion and to invest all domains of the expression and the communication: book industries, cartoons and animation movies, video games, corporate communication… And we indeed face kind of a paradox: widely present, drawing seems almost impossible to define and some philosophers like Jean-Luc Nancy even invite us to accept the "unthinkable" nature of the drawing. The international conference we organize on June 15th and 16th of this year in the villa Finaly of Firenze (Italy) does not intend to adopt similar position. Without wishing necessarily to produce a definition of the drawing, we intend to progress towards its understanding.

    L’enclave dans les mondes anglophones

Surrounded by a larger territory belonging to someone else, an enclave is a portion of territory where specific moral or social laws create a situation of isolation. The enclave is thus the privileged venue for particular phenomena that may only exist in this confined territory. It may be considered as an absolute alternative to the outside world, a utopia or a dystopia. By providing the possibility of a new start, the enclave raises the issue of escape or resistance, and brings up the problematic relationship that links it to the surrounding territory. The enclave thus creates a gap between interior and exterior, which allows it to contrast certain aspects, similar to a magnifying mirror. Beyond the territorial rupture, this symposium will explore and develop the network of complex relationships, which, from a geological, ontological and esthetic point of view, the enclave calls into question.
