The Role of Think Tanks and Technical Experts in Foreign and Security Policy
This international conference is part of celebrations for the 50th anniversary of Rome's Istituto Affari Internazionali. Taking IAI's role as a starting point, we wish to look more carefully at the think tank model and its role. The IAI case study allows us to illustrate both the culture promoting model and the technical expertise model which plays a direct role in advising and shaping government policy. Starting from the analysis of think tanks, we can broaden our overview to include the role of experts in foreign and security policy in an attempt to pinpoint the common factors and specific characteristics connected with the role of experts.

Second International Conference on Uyghur Studies
2e colloque international sur les études Ouïghoures
The Uyghurs are one of the ten most populous stateless nations in the world. While they have a long history of cultural accomplishments and political influences, they have remained marginal in international scholarship given their ambiguous position both in regional studies and in geopolitics. This conference is the second attempt to bring together a broad spectrum of the international community of scholars whose research is focused on the Uyghur people’s history, culture, society.

American public diplomacy in the Middle-East
The inverted pyramid paradigm? Genesis, institutions, strategies and reception
Politique Américaine, a political science journal published in French on US domestic politics and international strategies launches a call for papers for its special issue on: "American Public Diplomacy in the Middle-East: the inverted pyramid paradigm? Genesis, Institutions, Strategies and Receptions". Next to its impact on governments, public diplomacy is seen as a diplomatic practice aiming at directly or indirectly influencing civil societies. It encompasses all "seductive" strategies that a State implements towards the public opinions of another state or region. The growing importance of this idea highlights the necessity for the main players of international relations to maintain a multi-level dialogue with foreign civil societies in order to anticipate political and social developments initiated by other players than the State itself.

The International Echoes of the Commemorations of the October Revolution (1918-1990)
Commemorations express a political will to remember, a process that relies on establishing a mythologised historical referent. The Russian Communists were aware of the importance of this instrument for the implantation of a regime whose legitimacy was contested both domestically and abroad, and proceeded therefore to construct a new collective memory through the reordering of time around the regime’s founding act: the great socialist revolution of October. From 1918 on, 7 November was a day of celebrations: speeches, military parades, orderly marches, inaugurations of public monuments commemorative plaques, political carnivals, mass spectacles, and popular parties that united the peoples and territories of the Soviet Union in celebration of October. In addition to their domestic role in fostering unity, providing legitimacy, and facilitating internal mobilisations, the practices of commemorations also supported the regime’s international eminence, especially when it presented itself as a model for world revolution.

Jornada de estudio - Estudios políticos
The first part of the conference will discuss the global jihad and strategies of territoiralization. The jihad narrative, rooted in the colonial period in its current interpretation refers to belonging to the umma, a global nation imagined as the basis for a new identity which, instead of relating to a territory, follows the thread of networks beyond borders. Youths who have chosen the path of jihad thus turn state territories into a cross-border space that is deterritorialized and denationalized.

Social approaches to eighteenth-century international history
Diplomacy, trade and knowledge as regional phenomena
This call for papers invites scholars with fresh research projects to submit proposals for a workshop on Social approaches to eighteenth-century international history that is to take place at Sciences Po, on April 8, 2016. The workshop aims to confront, share and discuss the fresh claims on eighteenth century international history and its social approaches. We particularly encourage proposals that are able to link different sectors (such as diplomacy, trade and knowledge) and those that deal with the opportunities and limits of such trans-sectorial history. Contributions that handle different academic historiographies and traditions will be strongly privileged as well.

Costs and Alternatives to Border Fencing
More border walls and border fences are being built every year all across the world. Bulgaria, Greece, Turkey, Morocco, and Tunisia are among the latest to announce yet another border fence. Twenty-five years ago it was believed that the fall of the Berlin Wall and the reconfiguration of international relations would open an age of globalization in which States would become obsolete, ushering in a world without borders. In the wake of 9/11, however, borders came back in light, new borders were created and new border walls erected. In the wake of the Arab Spring, came even more border barriers and walls, symbols that were thought to have disappeared with the collapse of the bipolar international system. Today, they reinforce borderlines the world over, transforming both soft and semi-permeable borders alike into sealed, exclusionary hard borders. Walls are symbols of identity reaffirmation, markers of State sovereignty, instruments of dissociation, locus of a growing violence.

Sounds and voices on the international stage: understanding musical diplomacies
In international relations, music and diplomacy are strongly interrelated. Diplomats have gathered for musical events and musicians served as representatives. Whatever political unit is under consideration (city-states, empires, nation-states), music is a component of diplomacy, its ceremonies, and its strategies. There is a new interest for this dimension of international reality in History (Flechet & Marès, Gienow-Hecht), Musicology (Ahrendt et al, Fosler-Lussier), and International Relations (Dillon, Bleiker, Street) – beyond the aesthetic and cultural turns that marked these disciplines.

Research Residential Program at Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies
Fung Global Fellows Program “International Society: Institutions and Actors in Global Governance”
Princeton University is pleased to announce the call for applications to the Fung Global Fellows Program at the Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies (PIIRS). Each year the program selects six scholars from around the world to be in residence at Princeton for an academic year and to engage in research and discussion around a common theme. During the academic year 2016/17, the theme for the Fung Global Fellows Program will be “International Society: Institutions and Actors in Global Governance.” The growth of international organizations and transnational actors has brought about the emergence of a dense international society above the nation-state. Under what circumstances do new international organizations or transnational associations emerge, and when do they expand in their membership and jurisdiction? Does international society function as a constraint on states? How do states and societal actors navigate the complex and overlapping jurisdictions of international organizations? In what ways do international organizations and associations function as distinct cultures or as bureaucracies with their own interests?

Festivals in Hainaut at the time of Jacques du Broeucq
The aim of the conference is to bring to widespread public notice a famed series of occasions when, as the hub of Renaissance Europe, the Low Countries commanded the continent’s attention, with Hainaut and its capital Mons featuring as the site of the most famous and influential events. These took place in 1549 when Charles V, Count of Hainaut and Holy Roman Emperor, attempted to determine the continent’s dynastic, political and economic future by nominating as his successor his son Philip of Spain. With this aim in mind, Charles’s sister Mary of Hungary commissioned a series of magnificent festivals, the most lavish of which took place in September of that year at her palaces close to Mons at Binche and Mariemont.

Post, counter or simply hegemony?
Political thought and International Relations 30 years after “Hegemony and Socialist Strategy”
In 2015, 30 years will have passed since the publication of Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe’s “Hegemony and Socialist Strategy”. Since its first appearance, this text has become a reference point for theoretical reflection in the Social Sciences ― particularly for left leaning academics―, for its revival of theoretical debate around the notion of hegemony. Gramscian, poststructuralist and deconstructionist influences are intertwined in the theoretical political proposal of these authors. They attempt to move beyond classic Marxism, and class reductionism, to formulate an alternative to the neoliberal paradigm. Agonism and radical democracy are the principal theoretical and practical innovations emerging thanks to the work of these authors.
