  Borders, walls and violence

  Costs and Alternatives to Border Fencing

  More border walls and border fences are being built every year all across the world. Bulgaria, Greece, Turkey, Morocco, and Tunisia are among the latest to announce yet another border fence. Twenty-five years ago it was believed that the fall of the Berlin Wall and the reconfiguration of international relations would open an age of globalization in which States would become obsolete, ushering in a world without borders. In the wake of 9/11, however, borders came back in light, new borders were created and new border walls erected. In the wake of the Arab Spring, came even more border barriers and walls, symbols that were thought to have disappeared with the collapse of the bipolar international system. Today, they reinforce borderlines the world over, transforming both soft and semi-permeable borders alike into sealed, exclusionary hard borders. Walls are symbols of identity reaffirmation, markers of State sovereignty, instruments of dissociation, locus of a growing violence.

D’Haïti à Trinidad et Tobago en passant par Saint Kitts et Navis, la Dominique ou la Martinique, quelles sont les ressemblances ? La langue du grand compromis sera-t-elle l’anglais ou le créole ? CARIFESTA est l’occasion d’en discuter, pour commencer à créer des contenus, à donner des contours.

  Fung Global Fellows Program “International Society: Institutions and Actors in Global Governance”

  Princeton University is pleased to announce the call for applications to the Fung Global Fellows Program at the Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies (PIIRS).  Each year the program selects six scholars from around the world to be in residence at Princeton for an academic year and to engage in research and discussion around a common theme. During the academic year 2016/17, the theme for the Fung Global Fellows Program will be “International Society: Institutions and Actors in Global Governance.” The growth of international organizations and transnational actors has brought about the emergence of a dense international society above the nation-state. Under what circumstances do new international organizations or transnational associations emerge, and when do they expand in their membership and jurisdiction? Does international society function as a constraint on states? How do states and societal actors navigate the complex and overlapping jurisdictions of international organizations? In what ways do international organizations and associations function as distinct cultures or as bureaucracies with their own interests?

  Expériences, significations, politiques et technologies de la guérison

  Comme en témoigne la variété de ses qualificatifs, la fin de la maladie est investie de manière différente selon qu'on se place du point de vue du patient, de la médecine, de la santé publique ou encore de l'épidémiologie. Ce que guérir veut dire n'a en effet pas la même signification selon qu'on parle de rémission, de rétablissement, de réhabilitation, de convalescence, d'éradication ou encore d'élimination de la maladie. Déterminée par de nombreux facteurs et institutions (biologiques, sociaux, politiques, symboliques, etc.), la guérison est pourtant anticipée, désirée et négociée tant par les malades que par les cliniciens et les chercheurs.

  Instrumentalisation des discours ordinaires xénophobes

  In France, Bulgarian and Romanian migrants identified as “Roma” and usually living in slums are regularly the targets of categorizations, of rejection and of xenophobic violence. Even though other immigrated populations, such as Africans, have been subject to this type of ostracism for some time, the spectre of racism and xenophobia has spread under the effect of the diffusion of a number of political and media discourses. Whether coming from the right or the left of the political spectrum, these differentialist discourses stem from the highest level of the State, and have been regularly relayed by the media, thus legitimizing their presence within the French public space.

  La Convention de l’UNESCO sur la protection et la promotion de la diversité des expressions culturelles : dix ans après son adoption

  Quels enjeux et défis pour les politiques culturelles des États ?

  Ce colloque permettra de dresser un bilan de la Convention dix ans après son adoption et d'identifier les défis qui devront être pris en compte par les États Parties au cours des prochaines années, en particulier face aux enjeux actuels et aux référentiels pluriels qui remettent en cause les politiques culturelles en vigueur. L'événement impliquera des intervenants nationaux et internationaux, favorisera la rencontre d'universitaires établis et en émergence, de décideurs publics et d'acteurs de la société civile qui, depuis 15 ans, collaborent à la mise en œuvre de cet instrument juridique international.

  Capitalisme et démocratie sont-ils compatibles ?

  Nous assistons depuis quelques années à un retour en force de l’économie politique et d’enjeux socio-économiques quelque peu éclipsés, depuis la chute du communisme, par les revendications identitaires et post-matérialistes. Comment penser le lien entre ce renouveau et la réflexion plus large sur la démocratie qui se poursuit depuis plusieurs décennies ? Une partie de la pensée libérale présente le capitalisme et la démocratie, longtemps tenus par la théorie critique et le marxisme pour antinomiques, comme des réalités complémentaires. Y a-t-il lieu de confirmer cet optimisme libéral ou faut-il plutôt réintroduire une nouvelle analyse de la lutte des classes, ou du moins marquer la tension qui rend difficile et instable la coexistence du capitalisme et de la démocratie ? C’est la question centrale qu’entend poser ce colloque, avec la volonté d’explorer les diverses réponses possibles, sans exclusive.
