  "Arabic" Mathematics

  This monthly seminar will aim to invite researchers to come and present their work in progress or recently published that address the "Arab mathematics", understood in a broad sense to be studied not only mathematics itself, but science "mathematized" of the era, such as astronomy, optics and static; Furthermore, we do not restrict themselves to only written in Arabic mathematics, but we can address their writings in other languages extensions, like Latin, Hebrew and Farsi. The texts studied will be discussed at sessions of three hours. Emphasis on reading and commenting on sources.

  Πολυμαθία et πολυτροπία in the Antonine period

  Apulée de Madaure, « beau philosophe, très éloquent tant dans la langue grecque que la latine » (Apol. 4, 1) a vécu, selon une approximation vraisemblable, entre 125 et 180. Par là, il apparaît comme un acteur éminent de la culture impériale de l’époque antonine. La recherche récente a posé des jalons importants en replaçant l’auteur dans le contexte de la « seconde sophistique », un courant culturel qui s’est surtout exprimé en grec, aux II° et III° siècles. Mais des nuances, des précisions et des compléments restent à apporter : d’autres pistes fécondes sont apparues ou ont été renouvelées très récemment, comme sa proximité intellectuelle et biographique avec Aulu-Gelle, son identité provinciale , son rapport au langage et aux langues , son rapport au platonisme, et son attrait pour la chose religieuse.

  Consacré au thème de l’alimentation, ce salon montre que la fonction symbolique du partage de la nourriture perdure à travers toutes les civilisations, des premiers hominidés jusqu’à nos jours. Au fil des échanges entre les peuples, les manières de table changent, et l’imaginaire est à l’œuvre derrière les pratiques culinaires. Principale activité des humains, l’alimentation dépend des techniques agricoles, de la circulation des espèces, de l’invention de techniques de conservation. L'apparition de certaines plantes nouvelles et l'augmentation de la productivité vont-elles permettre progressivement de réduire les famines, en dépit des sécheresses, des inondations et des catastrophes sanitaires ? Le problème sera-t-il désormais davantage celui de la distribution régionale et mondiale des aliments que de sa production ?

  Feeding animals/Eating animals. Theories, Attitudes and Cultural Representations of Nutrition in Ancient and Medieval World

  Memoria scientiae 2015

  According to ancient biological theories, nutrition is, along with reproduction, one of the functions of the soul shared by men, animals and plants. At the same time, however, eating habits are among the starting points on which differences between humans, animals and plants are culturally built. This means that a transversal biological praxis can be used as an anthropological device, in order to to fix and identify specific boundaries and thresholds, either symbolic or theoretical, between both animality and vegetality on the one hand, and zoosphere and  anthroposphere on the other hand.
