Dans un monde soumis à la dynamique de la globalisation et marqué par des mouvements migratoires massifs, les figures et oppositions figées du centre et de la périphérie, de l’identité et de l’altérité, du soi et de l’autre se dissolvent tandis que l’expérience du déracinement, de l’exil, du passage produit une superposition de plusieurs cultures qui s’hybrident dans un territoire radicalement nouveau par rapport aux migrations d’antan. La situation du sujet moderne, décrite par Salman Rushdie dans Imaginary Homelands comme celle de l’homme traduit (the translated man), tend à se généraliser. Homi Bhabha a élaboré une théorie de la culture qui est proche d’une théorie du langage, recourant à la notion de traduction comme motif ou trope. Il s’agira, dans un premier temps, d’approfondir la réflexion sur la « traduction culturelle » et d’envisager dans quelle mesure ce motif peut (et doit) être lié à une réflexion renouvelée sur le rôle et les modalités de la traduction au sens propre. -

The Globalization of Production Models and Innovation in Emerging Economies
Comparative Research on Subnational Industrial Policies
This seminar will bring together scholars examining research themes pertaining to the evolution of production models in regions of India and China, in relation to the progressive opening of these large economies to trade and FDI. Of particular interest are industrial and innovation policies emerging at the state or provincial level and the manner in which these public policies interact with firm-level strategies in pursuit of more broad-based development goals. Apart from the keynote session, five thematic sessions are planned: Upgrading Regional Industries in India and China; Subnational Industrial Policies in India and China; Social Dimensions of Regional Industrial Performance; Articulating industrial policies between central and local levels; Industrial Districts and Regional Policies. -

Workshop on Palestinian Refugee Camps in Jordan
A Lasting Temporariness: Population, Space and Social Practices, 1990-2010
This one day workshop will focus on the social and spatial organization of the camps, the social practices of their inhabitants, and the influences, interpretations and effects of what we call a lasting temporariness on the Palestinian refugee camps in Jordan. Due to their significance and status, the camps represent key social spaces for exploring patterns of interaction between different religious groups and national minorities, for examining governance, for studying development and planning issues (infrastructure and services), for mapping the constitution of territories and identities, and for analyzing the development of an intricate network of economic and political connections inside and outside of their spaces. -

European Solidarity with Chile, 1970-1990
During the Cold War, Western Europe witnessed the emergence of various social movements with an orientation to Latin America. One of the most important mobilizations for Latin America was without any doubt the movement in solidarity with Chile, which already emerged in support for the Allende government (1970-1973) but especially gained strength after the military coup of 1973. Indeed, the overthrew of the Unidad Popular government in September 1973 and the subsequent repression by the Chilean military dictatorship inspired a wave of protest and solidarity in Western Europe, which lasted until the end of the regime of Pinochet in 1990. Support for the Chilean resistance and for the many refugees which had crossed the ocean was concretized in the establishment of hundreds of Chile solidarity committees across Western Europe and in the action of a variety of other organizations, including trade unions, church groups and NGO’s. The Chilean political opposition and refugees played an active role in this solidarity, although internal political tension proved to be an important obstacle for the Western European solidarity movements. -

À l'occasion de cet événement, un panel de chercheurs internationaux débattra de la diversité des expériences de violences populaires survenues au sein de plusieurs pays européens au cours du XIXe siècle. Le 37ème congrès de la Société d’histoire coloniale française se tiendra à Toronto du 2 au 4 juin 2011. Il aura lieu sur le campus central de l’Université de Toronto. Le thème principal portera sur « Liens et continuités entre les premier et second empires coloniaux français », mais comme toujours, des propositions de communication sur d’autres aspects de l’histoire coloniale française peuvent aussi nous être adressées. La Société encourage des chercheurs de toute discipline à soumettre des propositions. Les interventions ne doivent pas être déjà publiées, ni présentées ou programmées à un autre colloque. Chaque intervenant disposera de 20 minutes de présentation. -

Ce colloque ambitionne d'apporter de nouveaux éclairages en histoire du genre et en histoire politique en s'intéressant à la période consécutive à l'obtention du droit de vote par les femmes britanniques. Il s'agira de considérer comment les héritages contestés des mouvements pour le droite de vote des femmes et pour le suffrage universel ont influé sur les débats dans l'entre-deux-guerres sur les questions de représentation politique, de réforme démocratique, de division sexuelle du travail en politique et d'inclusion très graduelle des femmes dans l'arène politique nationale en Grande-Bretagne. -

Academic Culture of Remembrance
The combination of university history, jubilees and academic heritage
The aim of this two-day conference is to discuss the triangular relationship between scientific research, the opening up of academic heritage and the creation of a culture of remembrance. Two series of questions are at the centre of this symposium. (1) Firstly, we would like to examine, from a historiographical perspective, the relationship between university history, the culture of remembrance in general and university jubilees in particular. (2) Secondly, the place of academic heritage in the creation and communication of (historical) knowledge of universities and scientific practices will be considered. Through a combination of both central themes, the conference aspires to offer some innovative perspectives for writing contemporary university history. -

Religious Community and Modern Statehood
The passage from the Ottoman empire to modern states
The conference aims to explore various aspects of the communal organization in the Ottoman Empire for regions such as Asia Minor, Middle East and the Balkans, and to present the changes that occurred within the religious communities during the 19th century and particularly during the period from Tanzimat reforms until the First World War. Key questions in relation to the modernization process of the Ottoman state and the functioning of religious communities, are a) how does the Sublime Porte understand the process of structuring a modern state with respect to religious communities, b) who is responsible for the modern institutions: the state or the religious communities, c) what is the reaction of the religious communities regarding the modernization process d) why and in what way the religious communities are changing on the light of this process. -

Dynamization Of Gender Roles in Wartime: An East European Perspective on World War II and its Aftermath
While numerous studies have explored the effects of the occupying regimes on the respective societies, the impact of World War II on Gender relations has generally been treated as a rather marginal issue. In recent years, however, some important studies have been published shining light on various aspects of gender relations in times of war in Twentieth-Century Eastern Europe, and focusing on women as perpetrators, e.g. as “Agents of Germanization” (Harvey 2003), or as victims of sexual violence .The conference intends not only to piece the existing puzzle together, but to explore the interplay of World War II and gender roles in East Europe in a broad context. -

Pour qui s’intéresse aux dynamiques unificatrices et centrifuges à l’œuvre en Europe des temps modernes au XXIe siècle, l’Empire napoléonien soulève une interrogation : dans quelle mesure fut-il une expérience de construction européenne ? La question, on le sait, est en partie née du Mémorial de Saint-Hélène, dans lequel Napoléon se présente soucieux d’harmonisation administrative et juridique, attaché à la construction d’une « association européenne », d’une « patrie commune »; même si l’affirmation relève du mythe, elle n’en désigne pas moins la problématique des rapprochements éventuels, voulus ou implicites - et de leurs limites -, au sein de l’Empire et de l’Europe. -
