Religious pathways to better futures
Religious groups in Africa are not only an important source of imaginations of the future they are also remarkably active in their efforts to realize them. Thereby different religious groups articulate quite different visions on the future of their society, of Africa, the world or of mankind and follow different ways to pursue their goals: some groups might opt for public prayers, some for violence, some see in education the best way to realize their visions, some form political parties, and still others search for support in transnational networks or establish faith-based-organizations and try to link their future imaginaries to those of the donors in the world of development. Thus, looking at differing religious visions on the future and at the ways they are translated into practice, raises questions about the forms of public religion and interest articulation in a national and transnational setting as well as questions about religious diversity within a society.

Veranstaltungen des Projekts „Symbolik der Demokratie“
Das Projekt fragt nach der grundsätzlichen Bedeutung der symbolischen Repräsentation für die Konstitution des politischen Imaginären und nach den Veränderungen ihrer Modulierung und Strukturen angesichts der aktuellen massenmedialen Bedingungen. Im Rahmen dieses Projektes findet im WS 2013/14 eine Veranstaltungsreihe zu diesem Thema statt.
Alle Vertreter der Politikwissenschaften und benachbarter Disziplinen wie der Philosophie, Geschichts- und Kulturwissenschaften sind dazu herzlich eingeladen, um über zentrale Anliegen symbolischer Repräsentation in modernen Demokratien nachzudenken.

Le colloque est organisé par un groupe d’historiens qui, depuis plusieurs années, mène des recherches dans le domaine de l’histoire de la corruption politique depuis le XIXe siècle. Il repose sur deux postulats: la critique de la corruption ne concerne pas uniquement le politique, mais aussi les acteurs de l'économie, dans leurs liens avec l'État. De plus, une histoire de l’éthique managériale et économique avant la lettre fait encore défaut à ce jour.

Research workshop at the Marc Bloch centre
Dans la continuité de l’atelier « Entre Moscou et l’Europe : les partis communistes européens de 1945 à aujourd’hui », qui a eu lieu en juin 2012 au centre Marc Bloch (CMB) à Berlin, le centre Marc Bloch de Berlin, le Zentrum für Zeithistorische Forschung de Potsdam et l’Österreischiche Akademie der Wissenschaften à Vienne organisent un atelier de recherche intitulé « Entre Europe de l’Est et Europe de l’Ouest ? Les partis communistes d’Europe de l’Ouest pendant la dernière décennie de la guerre froide ». Les échanges prévus dans le cadre de cette manifestation doivent donner lieu à une discussion animée afin d’apporter de nouvelles connaissances sur ce sujet. L’objectif de cette rencontre est de servir de tremplin à une recherche future et d’élargir et renforcer la mise en réseau de chercheurs et de spécialistes de cette thématique.

The Georg Eckert Institute for International Textbook Research will award several short-term fellowships for visiting researchers in 2014. The GEI’s fellowship programme supports research on textbooks and other educational media. Fellowships aim to provide both young and established academics and textbook authors with the opportunity to use the extensive international textbook collection in its specialist library, conducting comparative studies, exchanging ideas and discussing their findings with the academic staff of the Institute.

International Graduate Conference
Practices of critique are intertwined with normative orders in manifold ways. They contain and refer reflexively to critical contentions, and they can enable as well as suppress critique. In this context it is essential to reconstruct the theoretical foundations of critique and power structures as well the practices in which they are instantiated. Three aspects are crucial: firstly concrete forms of power and their application, which always emerge from a tension between normative claims and solidified systems of rule; secondly the purview of justice as the foundation for critical rationale; thirdly the aspect of aesthetic representation. Such themes shall be addressed from multidisciplinary perspectives at the international graduate conference “Practices of Critique” on 5-7 December 2013.

Le Centre Marc Bloch attribuera cette année des bourses afin de soutenir la rédaction de thèse ou d’un projet de recherche en sciences humaines et sociales. Ces bourses soutiendront des projets des chercheurs en priorité non-résidents à Berlin, contribuant aux différents champs de recherche présents au Centre et qui travailleront en coopération étroite avec les groupes de travail correspondants. Elles peuvent financer des séjours de recherche en archives ou de recherche sur le terrain mais aussi des séjours de rédaction, d’organisation d’une manifestation ou de mise en œuvre de projets de projet de recherche au sein d´un groupe de travail du CMB.

Au-delà d’une analyse des politiques de ré-éducation / ré-orientation des occupants alliés, déjà bien étudiées, nous proposons d’articuler le questionnement autour de trois axes de recherche nous paraissant novateurs.

Phantom Borders in the Political Behaviour and Electoral Geography in East Central Europe
We understand phantom borders as political borders, which politically/legally do not exist anymore but seem to appear in different forms and modes of social action and practices today, as for example voting as one part of political behaviour. The conference deals with historical borders, made visible in discourses and maps concerning political behavior, as for instance in electoral maps. Our aim is to challenge the historical interrelation of current political behaviour, the involvement of geopolitical images, internal as external governance contexts and transnational networks for (re)constructing historical borders as phantom borders. We are interested in case studies especially about East Central Europe, but also in studies from all over the world combining qualitative and quantitative approaches, addressing the main questions of the conference. Case studies may address different levels and scales from local to transnational. -

The Cluster of Excellence “Asia and Europe in a Global Context” at Heidelberg University invites applications for 2 PhD scholarships (3 years) on Sino-Soviet War Crimes Trials Policy (1944-1949) within the Junior Research Group (JRG) “Transcultural Justice: Legal Flows and the Emergence of International Justice within the East Asian War Crimes Trials, 1946-1954”. The JRG examines the interaction between War Crimes trials policy in Europe and Asia after 1945, and focuses on institutions and legal staff as agents of concepts and norms which later became codified as UN standard. -

La politique peut être abordée sous de nombreux aspects, en termes de régimes politiques (démocratique ou autoritaire), d’institutions (partis, organes représentatifs, administrations), de mouvements, de discours. Les axes de recherche suivants peuvent être adoptés : Faire société / paix sociale / minorités réelles et symboliques ; culture dominante / subculture / subversion / mouvements alternatifs ; étrangeté / queer / représentations du corps ; modes d’expression de l’altérité. -

Ce programme de recherche franco-américain (Tours / Madison) entend étudier les formes et les contextes des remontrances durant l'Ancien régime. Ce programme prendra la forme d'une journée d'étude à Wolfenbûttel (2013) et d'un colloque à Tours (2015).
